General manager Omar Minaya said Friday he plans to travel to Puerto Rico next month to watch Delgado play in winter ball and has not ruled out re-signing him to play first base in 2010. The 37-year-old free agent is coming off hip surgery and an oblique injury that limited him to just 26 games last season.
Delgado would have to show that he is healthy and would likely have to accept a low guaranteed or incentive-heavy contract to return to Flushing. And the Mets will no doubt consider other options, including their own Daniel Murphy, to start at first base. But Minaya’s interest in monitoring Delgado’s progress makes it clear that another season with the Mets is not out of the question.
The Mets face far more critical questions this offseason than whether to bring back Delgado, namely how they will add more power to their lineup and whether they will acquire a legitimate No. 2 starting pitcher. But teams cannot negotiate with free agents other than their own until Nov. 20.

I hope Jeff and Omar remember that they have up to $50 million coming off the books after 2011.
Ollie $12mill
Castillo $6 mil
Beltran $20 mil
FRod $13 mil
While they may use some of that to re-sign FRod (if Holt or Parnell don´t develop as closers), I don´t see them re-signing Beltran (knees) or Ollie or Castillo. And they have potential replacements on the farm at 2nd (Havens, Tejada), and CF (Nieuwenhuis or FMart, if all goes well). So if they need to commit to long-term contracts this year, via FA or trade extensions, just backload the deals for pete´s sake! I don´t mind prudent use of money, but don´t cry poverty! They will lose what is left of the fans´ faith if they penny pinch too much now. If the only players they add are Figgins, Pineiro and Marquis, that ain´t gonna cut it.
Unfortunately, it´s a poor FA year (the one year when their pick is protected, of course!), and the farm is not barren but thin. So trades will have to be assuming big contracts for teams cutting payroll (Arroyo, Harang, possibly Oswalt, though he has a no-trade, Lance Berkman, etc) or they´ll have to give up prospects who might help keep the payroll down in later years.

“I’m prepared for anything,” Alfonzo said earlier this week. “Baseball is the one thing in my life that I know how to do. I don’t expect to play every day, but I feel I can help anytime. I can say many things with my mouth, but I have to prove it.”
Actions do speak louder than words. Because Alfonzo was last in the major leagues, in 2006 with the Angels and Blue Jays, he has been around the world, chasing his dream.
He played in the Independent League with the Long Island Ducks in 2007-08. He played 55 games in the Mexican League at the end of 2008. Last winter he went back home to Venezuela for winter ball and was Comeback Player of the Year.
Then Alfonzo really got adventurous. He went to Japan to play for the Yomiuri Giants this past season as the team won a championship.
“It was great, I really enjoyed it,” said the lifetime .284 hitter. “I went to Japan with the Mets in 2000 and I finally got the chance to go back and play. They really treated me as a great player. They recognized the work I did with the Mets. They were really polite in those terms.”
He feels so confident he is willing to put it all on the line for a shot at the majors. He’s going back to Venezuela for winter ball with the hopes of being signed by a big league team,,,

newday/lennon i think
The Mets intend to be among the serious bidders for righthander John Lackey when baseball’s free agents finally hit the open market next Friday at 12:01 a.m.
General manager Omar Minaya received a favorable first impression from the pitcher’s agent when the two spoke this week, and Lackey figures to be near the top of the club’s wish list in the weeks ahead.
The pursuit of Lackey could be similar to the Mets’ concerted efforts to lock up Francisco Rodriguez in the opening days of last year’s winter meetings in Las Vegas. The Mets identified K-Rod as their main objective, and with other big-market teams uninterested, they grabbed him with a lower-than-expected three-year, $37-million deal.
It’s unclear where the market is going for Lackey. But with Roy Halladay the only other true No. 1 starter available, Lackey could shoot for the $100-million range. The Mets may have too many other needs to go quite that high. Still, it would be tempting to pair him with Johan Santana as the best 1-2 tandem in the NL East.
As for those other holes to fill, Minaya said Friday that he plans to watch Carlos Delgado audition next month in the Puerto Rican winter league. Delgado, 37, remains a question mark as he tries to return from surgery to repair a torn hip labrum. But if he proves himself healthy in Puerto Rico, he could be a relatively low-cost source of power at first base.
The problem with scouting Delgado is that the winter league does not begin until mid-December and the winter meetings take place Dec. 7-10 in Indianapolis. Another indication that the Mets could be targeting Delgado is this week’s focus on Chone Figgins, who would be used primarily at second base and leftfield.
If the Mets intend to employ Figgins in left as part of their speed configuration, as a person familiar with the club’s thinking said, that would appear to rule out Jason Bay or Matt Holliday - the two big-ticket solutions for that spot. Under that plan, the Mets could be stuck with Luis Castillo, whose playing time would be reduced.
One position that appears set for 2010 is rightfield, where the Mets will keep Jeff Francoeur, who is arbitration-eligible this winter. Minaya said Francoeur will be back, but it seems unlikely that he will get involved in talks for an extension.Notes & quotes: The Mets are renovating the rightfield bullpens at Citi Field so visiting players will have better sightlines for the game. Last season, their view was obstructed so badly that they needed TVs in the visiting bullpen, and the Padres’ Heath Bell even went into the stands to watch . . . The Mets announced Friday that their baseball academy in the Dominican Republic will serve as the base for international operations. The $8-million facility also will absorb their players from the Venezuelan summer league.

from Rosenthal
Quote:
Former Indians manager Eric Wedge, former Mariners and Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin and former Orioles bench coach Dave Jauss are candidates to be the Mets’ next bench coach, according to major-league sources.
The Mets, however, are considering numerous other names as well, and do not appear close to a decision. The position could be a stepping stone; Mets manager Jerry Manuel, coming off a 70-win season, is entering the last year of his contract.
Wedge, who is getting paid by the Indians through 2010, can be selective in choosing his next job. Melvin interviewed for the Astros’ managerial position and also drew consideration from the Nationals.
Jauss previously worked as a bench coach with the Red Sox and Dodgers in addition to the Orioles.

From NYBD, soooooo doubt its true butt
It appears that Carl Crawford’s days in a Tampa Bay uniform could be numbered. We spoke with someone with knowledge of the situation on Friday who told us that Crawford is “livid” over management’s decision to pick up his 2010 club option for $10 million rather than renegotiate a contract extension, which was agreed upon by the two sides when Crawford first signed his contract. “He wants out of Tampa bad,” is what we were told. “He had a handshake agreement with management that they would renegotiate the contract instead of picking up the option and they went ahead and did it anyway. He’s pissed beyond belief.”
Rays management is going to be hard pressed now to satisfy their all star left fielder’s demands. In 2009 Crawford batted .305 with 15 homers, 68 RBI, an OPS+ of 113, and a career high of 60 stolen bases. There are many who believe that Crawford could easily get up to $20 million per year contract on the open market, and would be highly coveted by teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets and Boston.

Edgardo Alfonzo is hoping to receive an invite to spring training from some team this winter, hopefully the Mets.
Since Alfonzo last appeared in a major league uniform back in 2006 and has been playing in Long Island, Mexico, Venezuela and Japan since. He won the Japanese championship with the Yomiuri Giants last season but hit just .146/.293/.217 in 41 at-bats. A non-roster invite to the Mets’ spring training would be a nice feel-good story, but anything more than that and the story then just becomes another example of Met futility.
