This could be a decent pick up for the Mets, imho:

Dennis Manoloff of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians designated veteran reliever Matt Herges for assignment following tonight’s game. The move freed up a roster spot for the recently acquired Winston Abreu.

Herges had been effective for the Tribe, pitching to a 3.55 ERA in 25.1 innings, allowing fewer hits than innings pitched.

No doubt 71. But why would they give up on him? Things that make you go hmmmm? Maybe injury or something? If the guy is putting up those kinds of numbers (fewers hits then innings) for a pitching starved bullpen, I just wonder why there dumping him.
Hey, if they are that stupid (which they kinda have been) Id definatelty send omar down there with a pen and a contract. With this team we cant have enough bullpen guys, lol

I said from the get go it was a big mistake to bring Fernando up and I haven’t changed my mind. Yes, there were lots of injuries, but it was still a mistake. Chances are you could have gotten the same production from Jeremy Reed. But Jerry seems to hate him for some reason.

Nah, the worst of the national commentators is Sutcilffe. During the WBC Rollins made some “extra-effort” type play and Fire crotch said something like “that’s why the Phillies are World Champs and the Mets go home every
year”. Spoken like a true player that NEVER won a rung himself.

Fernando Martinez pinch-hit and grounded out to end the game, and I was surprised to see him enter at all. Martinez was limping badly in the clubhouse before the game, and told the Daily News a ligament behind his right knee has been causing pain for a week. That explains why Ryan Church (3-for-4) was in center field for a second straight game and third time this season. Martinez said he had the same trouble in 2006 with Class A Hagerstown. He said he may see a doctor when the Mets get back to New York.

from Rubin in the Daily News….should we be at all surprised by this??

I love how the official site suggests that Nieve will be the guy out of the rotation when Ollie comes back as opposed to Redding.

Redding’s been an absolute disaster in every way and Nieve’s shaping up as a pleasant surprise but… Redding’s making more money so he stays.

    I mean… for fuck’s sake.

    maybe, maybe not:

PHILADELPHIA — Fernando Nieve is to make his fifth start for the Mets on Saturday in the second game of their series against the Phillies. A chance exists that it could be his last. General manager Omar Minaya acknowledged as much on Friday night after the Mets’ 7-2 loss to the Phillies.

Armed with a report about the Triple-A performance of Oliver Perez on Friday night, Minaya indicated that the rehabbing pitcher is likely to return to the big league rotation next week and that either Nieve or Tim Redding is likely to be moved to the bullpen.

Granted, I’m out of touch here in Atlanta, but could someone please tell me if John Maine is:
    a) alive
    b) still with the Mets
    c) ever going to pitch again

Newsday is saying Redding is out of the rotation. I really think Parnell needs to work on his secondary stuff. He is not a major league pitcher right now. Most of Reddings starts, he’s handled the first time through the order well so I believe he can transition to the pen. Misch and Dessens have been piching well

John Maine, on the other hand, has a ways to go. Team officials tell me that Maine just tossed a baseball Friday in New York for the first time since getting shut down and receiving his second cortisone shot in the back of his right shoulder. He’ll be allowed to toss a baseball every other day, but is not cleared to even do any arm exercises yet. In a week, he may be cleared to work with rehab trainer Chris Correnti, Pedro Martinez’s former guru. But that doesn’t mean immediately stepping on a mound at that point. Remember, once Maine does get on a mound, he’s going to have to build up his innings count again, so we’re a ways away from seeing him. No way it will be right after the All-Star break.

I just don’t see how this team will be anywhere close to contention for anything (division or WC - division will probably be easier) by the time August 1 rolls around.

Prove me wrong, Mets! Prove me wrong.
