waiting to DL him will enable to get him back sooner by the whole retroactive shit
so danny’s post is saying in his opinion, to deal with the short bench to possibly get delgado BACK FROM THE DL earlier (in 10 days say instead of 15) is worth it.

And that would make sense with a mild sprain or a bruise or something. But if they’re admitting there’s an actual tear, that kind of goes out of the window. You don’t just ice a tear or shoot in cortozone.
You either perform surgery or you give it multiple weeks to heal naturally, depending on the severity.

Exactly. They can potentially get him back on, say, May 20 this way, instead of AT BEST May 26 if they DL’d him right now. I was speaking more from the Mets’ point of view, that is probably their line of thinking. I would probably DL him myself because he’s old, it’s a long season and the extra rest would probably be a good thing.

I would also DL him because I think Tatis is a suitable short-term replacement at first base and we have Church/Murphy/Sheffield to split the corners. So the 4 or 5 days the Mets are trying to maybe save doesn’t seem worth it because they have viable other starting alternatives.

The DL is the DL….15 days!
Poppycock! It’s 6 of one/ half dozen of the other. His retroactive date is his retroactive date…..no matter what day you put him on the DL. If they DL him on Sunday back to May 6 or they DL tomorrow back to May 6…..he needs to be off 15 days. No such thing as a “shorter stay.”

My best guess is that it has something to do with massaging Delgado’s ego or something. He’s probably telling them he’s a couple of days away or something.

Sorry, Shea. I left my computer, now on bberry, but I think Danny meant what Dep said. The point of my question was - what could they have to gain other than a shot at getting Delgado back in less than 14 days of rest?
Danny was making the point that the organization would consider playing with a short bench for a week or so an acceptable trade-off for a shot at getting Carlos back 4-5 days early. Not a decision they could make if we were discussing a pitcher. Since it is much more difficult to manage with a short pen.
And I thanked him for giving me a serious answer to my question. :-)
Comment posted byDannyon May 14, 2009 at 5:17 pm (#980268)
No shea, I was saying they are delaying putting him on the DL because if they can get him back in 5 or 6 days, they can have him available for 4 or 5 days before he would be available to come off the DL. And it’s much easier to navigate a short bench for a few days while you make these decisions.
Quick decisions need to be made with relievers because our starters don’t last very long and we need every arm in the bullpen available every day.

The Marlins are now saying that Josh Johnson had some weakness in his right shoulder before coming out of Thursday’s game.
The official word during the game was that there was no injury, but the Marlins said afterwards that there was an area of some concern. “It just doesn’t feel great,” Johnson said. “I wanted to go back out there. It’s not tight. Almost weak. But then I came in here and did all the strength stuff, and they told me it’s not weak. I’ve heard stories of people leaving Colorado and feeling absolutely awful their next start.” Johnson threw eight innings at high-altitude Coors Field five days ago. May. 14 - 5:01 pm et

That’s pretty impressive for a short guy, Dep.
I could barely throw around 55-60 when I was in shape, but I tore my rotator cuff and will never be able to throw that hard again.
I could throw strikes like nobody’s business. If hitting 50 mph cheese was good prep for major leaguers, I would have a job.
You want to feel like you’re a great hitter? Hit off me.
But imagine hitting off of me right after hitting against a hard thrower. I would be unstoppable!

Update, 6:49 pm:
In a post to Twitter, Newsday’s David Lennon reports Jose Reyes will miss tonight’s game due to a stiff right calf.
Original Post:
Jose Reyes will be out of the lineup tonight as he gets a day off. Alex Cora will play short and bat second, while Luis Castillo will be in the lead off spot.
Castillo will be followed by Cora, Carlos Beltran, Gary Sheffield, David Wright, Fernando Tatis, Ramon Castro, Ryan Church and John Maine.

This lineup might score 2 runs tonight, what with the fatigue and the flying and the Reyeslessness.
