I have read a few Conroy novels — I have never been disappointed — although, the Prince of Tides was not my cup of tea!

There are writers I like better overall, but Conroy can put together words as well as anyone. The Prince of Tides has some beautiful writing on just about every page. Very southern. John Irving is one of my favorites for his stories and overall style. Jeffrey Eugenides was great in Middlesex (thanks Lister!), and Walter Moseley sets up character as well as anyone I´ve read.

They knocked on the door of Sucart’s home, but no one answered. The producer proceeded to phone the home and his wife Carmen answered.

“I told you my husband has nothing to say,” Carmen told the producer. “What A-Rod said at the press conference is what happened and that is all. And if you want to talk to my husband, why don’t you talk to his lawyer?”

Reports are god damn a-holes, this guy should not have people banging on his door and being hunted down like this. We should find this reporters house and go baning on their door in the middle of the night and ask them why the (%&)$( they are such )(%()$ a-holes and do they care to comment.

Switzerland’s largest bank and U.S. officials have been negotiating intensely since allegations surfaced last year that UBS helped as many as 17,000 Americans conceal up to $20 billion.

Bet all of them were against the stimulus and totally in favor of tax cuts….lol!

There was so much in Prince of Tides that never made the movie (though they did do a decent job with the movie, given the limitations). The whole story of the brother wasn´t in the film, but was a great part of the book.

Like I say, I’m just not in the mood for crucifying dudes just for ‘roiding anymore. It was wrong, it is wrong but… so many people did it that I’m sure, at this point, that guys on my team did it and players that I liked on other teams did it and… it feels awful and weird at this point to dogpile when I know what’s coming down the line.

Now, dogpiling on dudes for doing it AND being douches like Bonds and Clemens… or for doing it AND being cowards like McGwire or Souser or whatever, that’s different but…

I’m sure there’s a few guys I rooted for on the list of 104 and I ain’t got it in me anymore.

Lew- The first time I read Cider House Rules I didn´t get into it too much, as it was such a change from Garp and Hotel New Hampshire. But on second reading it became my favorite. The only one that didn´t work for me was Son of a Circus, because I couldn´t really identify with the narrator. Some the the more recent ones haven´t grabbed me as much as the earlier stuff, but I still enjoyed them
The movie Door in the Floor, with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger, was based on part of Widow for One Year.

lew, question. As someone who was against the stimulus, I’m interested in your opinion regarding Govs Jindal and Sanford saying they may not take the money. Should the people in their states be punished for their ideology? Just curious to hear your take. I personally don’t care if they take it or not.
I apologize to everyone in advance for this question. I won’t pursue it, I promise. I was just curious to hear lew’s take.

Honestly, it would come down to what strings are attached to the money in the stimulus package — I don’t think any governor in his right mind would turn down federal dollars to his state — regardless of ideology.

I also know of very, very few federal governmental handouts that don’t come with strings (how else do you explain the uniform 21 year old drinking age?)

I haven’t had a chance to read enough about the rationale for turning down the money to make an informed statement.

But I would be very, very suprised if the reason has anything to do with political beliefs.

I mean, shit, I was against the stimulus, but I am not giving back the extra $50 I got in my paycheck due to the tax reduction!

    Now, this is funny:

A man sat at a local bar and said, “This is a special day, I´m celebrating.” “What a coincidence,” said the woman next to him. I´m celebrating, too” she replied, clinking glasses with him. “What are your celebrating?” “I´m a chicken farmer, and for years all my hens were infertile, but today they´re finally fertile.” “What a coincidence, the woman said, for my husband and I have been trying to have a child. Today, my gynecologist told me I´m pregnant! How did your chickens become fertile?” she asked. “I switched cocks,” he replied. “What a coincidence,” she said.

Yep — unfortunately it will also stimulate inflation.

There is a line to walk between getting us out of the current mess and not fucking us too badly three years down the road.

I don’t want to debate the merits one way or the other, but that is many people’s biggest hang-up over the stimulus.

Honestly, I go back and forth, I just wish there was a lot less pork in the stimulus — unfortunately, nothing comes out of DC without wasteful spending — I should know, I work in the #1 ranked lobbying law firm in the country (but I am not a lobbyist!)

  45. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on February 19, 2009 at 1:19 pm (#931299)

Not to get too much into it, either, but…

Things are turning so entirely sideways so fast that, like, the admitted risk of some inflation is short-term inconsequencial in comparison, I feel.

The difficulty with tax cuts is that ultimately the rich will hoard their money or spend it out-of-country in some manner, the middle class will plow it into debt-reduction which won’t stimulate the economy and the poor, frankly, there’s only so much effect that cutting the taxes on people who aren’t taxed much to begin with will do.

Creating jobs risks inflationary pressure, yeah, but giving money to the financial system and large business caused those businesses to… hoard the money and/or give it to the already obscenely wealthy… and cutting taxes in this environment wouldn’t really go back into the system either.

Creating jobs, though, makes money that will actually cycle through the system.

And that’s what we need desperately.

    Two things:

the admitted risk of some inflation is short-term inconsequencial in comparison, I feel.

The key here is how much is “some” I agree that small inflation is worth it, but if it hits too soon or spikes too high, we will repeat the late 70’s.

the middle class will plow it into debt-reduction which won’t stimulate the economy and the poor, frankly, there’s only so much effect that cutting the taxes on people who aren’t taxed much to begin with will do

The poor will invariably spend all of the tax cut/hand outs because they have to. Believe it or not, the R’s proposed stimulus package only had tax cuts in it for the lowest two tax brackets.

Plowing the money into debt reduction will help stimulate things because it will a) reduce the amount of outstanding credit that banks have on the books making it easier for them to loan, and b) it will help stave off further defaults

    Language oops-
In catalan, the word ¨Can¨ means neighborhood, or something similar. Restaurants are often named after the neighborhood. There used to be a restaurant in our area named ¨Can Fart¨.
In Portugal last year I saw a restaurant named ¨Restaurant Fartos Brutos¨.
There was a hardware store (ferreteria in spanish)in our town that wanted to open an online store. It being fashionable to use english words, they decided on HardOn. My language school called them to explain, as delicately as possible, the meaning of their new name. The website was changed the next day (though it reminds me of Snap-On Tools back in the US).

The Bulls have traded Larry Hughes to the Knicks for Tim Thomas, Anthony Roberson and Jerome James, according to league sources as reported by ESPN.com.
Hughes should be picked up in most leagues, as he’s going to get run for the still short-handed Knicks. However, it remains to be seen if Thomas will play for the Bulls, as he has a history with them and was sent home by Scott Skiles a few years ago. James’ career is over due to a ruptured Achilles, and Roberson’s not good enough to break through for the Bulls this year.

ESPN.com is reporting that the Knicks have traded Malik Rose’s expiring contract to Oklahoma City for Chris Wilcox and his expiring deal.
Wilcox will probably get nice run for the undersized Knicks, although this trade is not yet official, and won’t be until a physical is passed by both players. Wilcox should be a decent source of double-doubles, but doesn’t block shots.

You can’t make this shit up:

Minnesota wrestling legend Verne Gagne has been implicated in the death of a fellow nursing home resident, who died a few weeks after he was injured in an altercation with Gagne.

The incident was first reported by MinnPost.com. The Web site reported that both the 82-year-old Gagne and the man who died, 97-year-old Helmut Gutmann, were residents of the memory loss unit at Friendship Village in Bloomington and suffered from Alzheimer’s-related dementia.

On Jan. 26, Gagne apparently threw Gutmann to the floor, breaking his hip. He was treated at a hospital and released, but was later re-hospitalized, KMSP-TV said. He died Saturday, the station said.

Braves Leaning Toward Internal Options In OF
By Tim Dierkes [February 19 at 1:12pm CST]

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick talked to Braves GM Frank Wren, who says the Braves are more likely to try their young outfielders than acquire a veteran outfielder after failing to sign Ken Griffey Jr.

Crasnick adds that the Braves “aren’t very excited” about Garret Anderson and have little to no interest in Jim Edmonds and Luis Gonzalez. He says the salaries of Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher might be prohibitive. Pure speculation on my part - the Braves could definitely afford Luke Scott if he’s available for trade.

Looking at those trades again, I would have to say that Walsh seriously upgraded the Knicks.

Hughes gives them a legitimate shooting guard who will be playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Wilcox is under-sized, but he can run the floor and will produce in D’antoni’s offense.

And all he gave up are four guys who weren’t in the rotation

love this story. makes me think of Remember the Titans and one of the coaches bitch out the kids saying “You didnt come out here to work, CHAMPIONS PAY DA PRICE”

On the main field, I watched the outfielders take batting practice, doing Jerry Manuel’s 80–straight pitch batting drill, which Marty Noble wrote about earlier in the week on MLB.com.

I was tired just watching them. Seriously. Ryan Church came out of the cage, dripping in sweat, looking beat, and he ran right for the Gatorade cooler. Daniel Murphy was no different.

I am not sure who was feeding the pitching machine, but he was pushing these guys hard.

Murphy finished, looked tired, exhaled and shook his head, to which the coach said, “What? That’s right. That’s the price you pay to win a ring.”

A Manhattan jury awarded $2.33 million to a man who lost his leg after drunkenly stumbling onto the path of an oncoming subway train.

The drunk’s lawyer. His name is Smiley.

Dustin Dibble, 25, landed in the subway tracks after a late night watching a hockey game at a bar with friends April 23, 2006. A downtown N train ran over him, severing his right leg. According to Dibble’s lawyer, Andrew Smiley, NYC Transit rather than Dibble bore primary responsibility for the accident because the subway driver had time to stop the train but did not.

Smiley added that Dibble’s drunkenness did not excuse the driver, who said in a court deposition that he mistook Dibble for an inert object.

Dibble’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the accident was .18, according to his lawyer, more than twice the legal limit had he been behind the wheel of a car.

As crazy as it sounds, that legal theory is 100% accurate.

That’s Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Dep. He’s a well known astrophysicist, born and bred in New York City. I loved the last part about our “entertainment complex” being way too close to our “sewage system”. I never thought of it that way, but boy oh boy is that some pretty poor design! Especially if you’ve been unfortunate enough to get too close to someone who isn’t very, uh… hygienic.

    Ewwwwwwwww!
