Later, Beltran talked with reporters and said he agrees with Francisco Rodriguez’s statements about how the Mets have improved since last season, saying, “He said that? I agree with him… Hopefully we do everything right and accomplish our goals.”
Beltran was asked about Cole Hamels’s comment about the Mets being ‘choke artists,’ to which he said, “All I know is that he’ll be watched every time we face him. Hopefully we kill him… I think their team is also better, but I also feel like the team is better.”

I love the people who are now defending their favorite players against steroid use. The Pudge Rodriguez ones are the funniest because he is probably the most obvious former steroid user.
You know what, if Piazza or Fonzie or Olerud suddenly come up as steroids users, I’ll be sad. Very sad. But I won’t be shocked.
Come on people, it’s so blantantly obvious Pudge was a roids. Just stop it.

I know, just giving you shit.
Personally, I think the policy needs to either be a lot stronger or their shouldn’t be one at all.
I also think that it is stupid to have a policy that bans stuff you can buy at GNC — regardless of the reason.
Ban everything illegal and anything requiring a perscription and then hit guys with 80 game suspensions.
As long as baseball continues to half-step their policy, this shit is going to keep happening.
The worst part is the ex post facto nature of all of this. Baseball allowed steroids to permeate the sport and did nothing about it — now they want to curcify the players for actions the league was willing to turn a blind-eye towards.
Stupid.
I think the policy they have now is good enough. 50 games is a third of the season, in line with what the other sports league with a massive roid infestation that just seems to skate by has. The problem with allowing all the GNC stuff is that certain things you buy at GNC can make it appear like you’ve taken actual steroids and others are masks for roids(like nadolone), so you ban that stuff to prevent guys from crying that it was legal.

Green’s sinker helped produce the eighth-best ground ball percentage among relievers who pitched in at least 50 games last season, according to Stats, LLC. Green did not allow a home run to a right-handed hitter in 172 at-bats last season.
Nearly four years later, in the hours after Green was dealt again, several teams called General Manager Omar Minaya to see if he wanted to flip Green. Each time Minaya told them no. The Mets did not want just Putz. Green was not a throw-in. They wanted him and were not about to give him up.

Originators praise adapted series
Life on Mars rare example of successful U.S. adaptation
Alex Strachan, Canwest News Service
Published: Monday, January 26, 2009
The English and the Americans are two people separated by a common language. Occasionally, though, they do read things the same way.
Take Life on Mars, for example. Few expected the U.S. adaptation of one of the most recognized and respected British TV dramas of its day to hold a candle to the BBC original, especially after the remake became mired in behind-the-scenes controversy and had to undergo extensive revisions — including a new script and a new supporting cast — before a single minute aired on its parent network ABC.
Life on Mars, they said, was the new Viva Laughlin, last year’s disastrous U.S. remake of the British, BAFTA-winning gangster musical Blackpool.
Instead, the new version has earned the grudging admiration and respect of its critics. It bowed in October, and pulled in just enough viewers to warrant a full season pickup. The new Life on Mars returns with new episodes Wednesday.
And last week, it drew just what might be the ultimate accolade — praise from the original series’ co-creator, Ashley Pharoah, and British actor Philip Glenister, who played hard-living, hard-hitting Det. Chief Inspector Gene Hunt in the original. That’s the character played by Harvey Keitel in the set-in-New York version.
Pharoah and Glenister, appearing via satellite from London where they were promoting BBC’s new Life on Mars sequel, Ashes to Ashes — which has been updated to the early ’80s and stars Keeley Hawes, of Spooks fame — came not to bury the U.S. remake but to praise it.
“I’ve seen eight episodes in all,” Pharoah said.
“They’re very generous, very interested in what we did, the mistakes we made and the decisions we made. I’m very pleased with it, and I hope it’s doing well for ABC. “It feels part of the Life on Mars family.”
Asked to compare Glenister with Keitel, who plays Hunt in the U.S. version, Pharoah said, deadpan: “Philip keeps his clothes on more” — a reference to Keitel’s memorable appearance in Abel Ferrara’s bad-cop classic Bad Lieutenant.
“No, I was lucky enough to meet Harvey early on in the process,” Pharoah continued. “There aren’t many actors in my life, apart from Philip obviously, who I’m nervous about meeting. It was amazing to be with him on his home patch. The first thing he said to me was how he thought Philip gave an awesome performance, and then he borrowed my phone and phoned him.”
Glenister recalled the moment. “He promised that he would wear the white slip-on shoes as an homage to me, which is one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever been paid, quite frankly,” Glenister said.
Pharoah said the 1975 British police series The Sweeney was an early influence on Life on Mars.
Of contemporary U.S. series, Pharoah says he was most struck by The Wire.
“Generations of writers and actors here have been taken by The Wire,” he said. “I watched The Wire with my jaw on the floor it was so brilliant.
“There’s a huge difference between the American and the British systems of making television. If you look at the two Life on Mars side-by-side, you see that difference. Our Life on Mars, for good or ill, is a much denser show. It’s more poetic, I think, because we knew we only had six, 12 or a maximum 18 episodes to work with. Whereas ABC is obviously hoping its Life on Mars will go 60, 70 episodes. That’s the point of your television, isn’t it? You can’t have a guy with his head in his hands for 60 episodes.”
Asked if he will eventually run out of David Bowie songs to adapt into TV series, Pharoah laughed once more.
“They haven’t started on Tin Machine yet,” he said.
The fifth season of “Rescue Me” won’t premiere for another couple of months, but FX is already preparing for the season after that.
The cable channel announced Thursday (Feb. 12) that it’s ordered a sixth season of the series about firefighters scarred by their jobs and still dealing with the fallout from 9/11. It also set a premiere date of Tuesday, April 7 for season five.
“‘Rescue Me’ is one of the very best series on television and a tentpole program for FX,” says John Landgraf, the network’s president and general manager. “We’re amazed by the quality of episodes for the upcoming fifth season, which are some of the best they’ve ever produced. I believe this show will continue to maintain a level of excellence for several years to come, and we’re thrilled to pick it up for a sixth season.”
The sixth season will run for 18 episodes, FX says. There’s no word yet on when it will hit the air.
In addition to working on the series, co-creator and star Denis Leary will also launch a “Rescue Me Comedy Tour” starting March 21 in Atlantic City, N.J. The tour will feature his “Rescue Me” co-stars Lenny Clarke and Adam Ferrara and will include an April 2 performance at New York’s Radio City Music Hall that will benefit the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

Orlando Hudson Likes The Royals
By Drew Silva [February 17 at 7:22pm CST]
FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports that free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson “is interested in the Royals.”
Tim covered this for MLBTR earlier today, but Rosenthal has made a few updates.
Hudson has ties with two members of Kansas City’s coaching staff and wouldn’t mind a reunion. Of course, that doesn’t mean a deal will get done. The Royals would have to move some cash around to fit him in their budget and this market might not allow it. Hudson is thought to be seeking between $4MM and $5MM.
As Rosenthal notes, the signing would also “cost the Royals a second-round draft pick due to the team’s finish in the bottom half of the overall standings last season.”

I hate shit like this. It’s Gary-fodder.
Look at his splits against LHH.
U-G-L-Y
They almost make Show look like he is effective againt RHH
lolz…yupyup. sidearmers will always have problems with lefties, unless you a lefty sidearmer haha
and of course the mets will let him pitch to a bunch of righties. ;)
err non-righties/lefties

I am even more pleased with our bullpen after reading some articles today than I was yesterday.
We actually have much more depth for the last couple of slots than I realized.
Now I know why Omar didn’t sign Ohman.
i totally forgot about tom martin
and its easy to sleep on ROCKY CHERRY!
the other guy from the rule 5 will be on the DL all year me thinks
lol, now i remember why i forgot about tom martin
dude sucks
cant even get lefties out
Fossum is more intriguing than Martin.
Fossum had good splits vs LH until 2006.
For some reason in 06-07 lefties killed him.
He was decent against them again last year.
If last year was more a trend to his early career vice a fluke, he could be pretty good.
If Rocky Cherry could throw strikes, he would be AWESOME. Dude has good K and BAA numbers, but he walks more guys than he strikes out!
O’Day.
And i posit you are correct.
Hopefully he will be part of the 2010 bullpen.
