    Our RH bench bat?

Bobby Kielty, a nonroster outfielder, is the rare switch-hitter who hits remarkably better from the right side. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Kielty has the largest differential — 69 points — between his career right-handed (.296) and left-handed (.227) batting averages among switch-hitters who have made their debuts since 1969 and have had more than 500 at-bats from each side of the plate.

He is well aware that he batted .243 with runners in scoring position — well below his career .300 mark — despite piling up a career-best 124 RBIs.

How does someone bat .243 with RISP and still knock in 124??

We are officially doomed! The Phillies signed Miguel Cairo to a minor league contract and invited him to camp to win a roster spot. Yikes!

    1. David Wright Mets 703 121 32 107 20 .302/.400/.538 0.97
    2. Chipper Jones Braves 567 104 23 90 5 .341/.443/.564 0.95

    10. Kevin Kouzmanoff Padres 639 76 24 92 2 .275/.331/.465 0.83

David Wright is one of the few players in the game who you could classify as perfect, as he has an amazing balance of power, patience, ability to hit for average, speed, and, if your league counts it, defensive play. He’s a candidate to be taken with one of the first few picks; PECOTA thinks he’s capable of putting up a 30/20 season with a ton of runs this year, and his Beta shows no reason to doubt that.

    He´s 49 and a former Expo…consider it done!

Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd has long felt the game of baseball was taken away from him far too soon. He was 31 years old when he threw his last pitch for the Texas Rangers in 1991. But now, at age 49, Boyd believes his shoulder is stronger than ever. He says his velocity is up in the low 90s and the 12-6 curveball and changeup have returned. He wants a chance to show a major league team he can still pitch. “I have nothing to lose, and all a major league team has to lose is 15 minutes,” said Boyd. “Give me 15 minutes and I’ll show I can still pitch. That’s all I want.” It’s always been Boyd’s dream to carry on the legacy of Satchel Paige and pitch into his 60s. Two weeks ago, at the Red Sox fantasy camp, Boyd started throwing in earnest again and was pleased with the results. — Boston Globe

Hampton left Osceola County Stadium after a brief workout to catch a flight to Houston, where Astros team physician Dr. Jim Muntz planned to examine the veteran lefthander later in the afternoon. Barring any complications, Hampton was expected to “undergo a procedure to correct his heartbeat with the application of electrical current,” the club announced

Hampton’s irregular heartbeat makes me wonder about whether or not he doped during his prime in the late 1990s. Here is a guy who physically fell apart at a relatively young age when the anti-steroid hysteria was beginning. Were steroids keeping his body intact? Hmmmm….

Probably early beats. The nerves in your heart get over-excited or something, and they fire too soon. There are apparently two varieties and one of them can be a real problem. I apparently get the NOT a real problem kind, often brought on by caffeine, which I quit now five years ago. (Still jones for a coca-cola now and then. Caffeine is an eeeevilly addictive drug.) Treatment for the real problem kind, as I understand it, involves zapping a node or something on those nerves in the heart, keeping them in check.

Of course, it could be that the pressures he experienced in searching for better schools than can be found for millionaires in Manhattan have brought on heart palpitations. I prescribe lots and lots of rest.

Now, thanks to Heath Bell, shrinking players have an even more contemporary tactic to detail how they became svelte over the winter months.

According to the Padres reliever, he was able to lose 25 pounds, simply while using the Wii Fit with his children. Bell started the winter at a beefy 270 pounds, but reported to the Padres’ Arizona camp at 245 and is among the favorites to take over Trevor Hoffman’s old closer job.

All because he was initially discouraged by how pudgy his Mii avatar looked.

    From the Associated Press:

“It said I was obese,” Bell said. “If you’re obese, it makes (your character on screen) obese. I was disappointed that I was that big. I literally took the game to heart. I did the work, but I kind of credit the Wii Fit.”

Where is everyone? Baseball is right around the corner. Syracuse is about ready to take the Big East by storm (sorry Custer) and that little cute Nate Robinson just won the slam dunk contest. If thats not enough for 3,000 posts then I dont what is :(

Its one heck of a season isnt it Custer? Who really knows at this point. One of my good friends already has tix for 3 games down there and will be staying in a nice fancy hotel room. (Lucky Bastid, lol) I cant wait to see who comes out on top. It can really be anyone at this point. I wouldnt count out ND or Villinova either. Its been a great season thats for sure.

I am a Syracuse alum… Newhouse ‘01 and everything… and I hold no delusions that Syracuse is the cream of the Big East.

Do they deserve to get into the field of 64? Sure.

But they look like second-round roadkill to me.

  50. Comment posted by metswin2009 on February 16, 2009 at 10:00 pm (#930460)

And I hope Heilman has a great season bro. Any word on him starting or will he be in the pen? I really hope they let him start

  51. Comment posted by metswin2009 on February 16, 2009 at 10:05 pm (#930461)

Well, you have to remember LFM, they are young. The entire starting 5 will be back next year and Flynn is only a sophmore. Once you get in the 64 its anyones game. Heck, how many times did Duke look like the cream of the crop and wind up falling early. Thats awesome that you were an alum there. My sis was an Alum way back in the early 80’s. I got to see Joe Morris play and loved the Syracuse atmosphere. I never quite made it to ‘Cuse. I didnt take college seriously unfortunately and thanks to hard work and and a love for killing pests (exterminator) I found my calling, lol

the cubs are going to give aaron a full & fair shot to win the #5 spot from all i have heard & read. and i am close to the chicago sports thing. the 5 spot is wide open & w/harden’s constatnt shoulder issues, the 4 spot may be available soon. who knows? shark/heilman at the 4/5 in wrigley? wouldn’t that be a fighting irish kick in the pants?

  53. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on February 16, 2009 at 10:32 pm (#930465)

Oh, if they all come back, they’ll be better next year, no doubt. I’m cautiously optimistic about the ol’ Cuse… hell, I hold fondly the memory of rushing the field after Donovan won the Big East on the last play of the game… but I’m not the type to get my hopes up irrationally.

  54. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on February 16, 2009 at 10:32 pm (#930466)

Heilman starting for the Cubs means at least one more guaranteed win for the Mets this year and… that’s a good thing.

  55. Comment posted by bcuster on February 16, 2009 at 10:37 pm (#930467)

the weird thing about the mets & the cubs this year is that they don’t meet until late august. that is a LONG time from now. but a heilman v santana match-up; that i would like to see. my prediction: a double no-hitter w/the mets winning 2-0 on unearned runs…
