and don’t get me started on the $60 HDMI cables or surge protectors at CC and BB!!! Huge rip-offs!!

The cables are the WORST! I know enough not to spend stupid money on a HDMI cable, but the technology is very confusing. Ya got yer 1.3, yer 1.3a, yer 1.3b and guess what? They are all the same! Load of crap. There’s no reason why this needs to be so confusing. That’s why so many people shy away from technology. Hell, I didn’t even wanna buy this player because I know the format will be dead in 5-7 years.

The Gold Box deal of the day is Band of Brothers on Blu-Ray.

I think I am going to get it.

but my brother did get me a new official David Wright jersey on there for Christmas :)

Love the eBay. It’s a great tool and not just for making purchases. Also for research.

I purchased my Reyes Throw Back The Clock 1986 jersey off of there. I still have the receipt, but I can’t remember what I payed. All I remember was that it was a steal. Totally authentic. Bought it from a guy who got it as a gift and just wanted to make a few bucks. Was willing to sell it for less than MSRP. Even with what he required for S&H, I think I was still in the black by about $35 bucks.

Got it on DVD. God I hope those things will continue to play on whatever formats come out in the future. I really don’t care about the crystalist, clearest image possible. DVD image quality is just fine for me. I can’t go out replacing every damn DVD I ever purchased with a new format! I’d have to take out a second fucking mortgage!

Christ. I just wanna watch my movies.

This hotstove offseason has definitely been one of the worst to date in terms of the amount of talent that is available and the inactivity thus far. Are all the remaining big name free agents (Ollie, Wolf, Garland, Sheets, Dunn, Hudson, Abreu, Manny, etc) waiting on Ollie to sign or what?

    What is the hold up?

I’m not and I refuse to (with certain exceptions). If I had the spare change, maybe.
I also have a ton of VHS tapes that I should transfer to something (?) one day.

So are all the players just going to hang out to the 11th hour in the hopes that some team ponies up what they (the player) deem themselves worth?

I’m really starting to think the Mets will end up with Sheets or Garland on shorter terms - and decide to pass on Ollie Perez.

Boras can get especially evil when teams don’t want to spend a lot :)

Long-Term Deal Coming for Heath Bell?
By Dan Slowey [January 20 at 7:43pm CST]

Fresh on the heels of their arbitration-avoiding one-year, $1.225MM deal, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres and Heath Bell may soon come to terms on a multi-year extension.

Regarding the likelihood of such an extension, Padres GM Kevin Towers stated, “We explored it in September for probably about a month. It’s something we’re still open to. I imagine that’s something we will explore in the next couple days. I don’t see this thing dragging out.”

Bell, set to replace Trevor Hoffman as the Padres’ closer in 2009, had a 3.58 ERA in 78 innings in 2008.

I agree..just hope it includes Sheets or Ollie and its not Wolf and Redding…that would be a nightmare.

I wanted Lowe, but not at 4/60…dont want Ollie at 5/60…that would be him at full potential, not what we’ve gotten. Sheets is a worthwhile gamble to me at 2 years

Bottom line, we have an owner that doesnt really want to win badly enough, he wants bargains and to win so that he makes money. We arent even expanding payroll, yet they are definately going to have more reevenues. And we are missing a chance to dominate.
A dominant #2 starter is more valuable than a setup man, to me this makes the whole Putz deal stupid.

I’ve read that Freddy Garcia is suppose to choose among us the W/Sox, and Rangers this week. If he chooses the Mets, I wonder how that will affect FA signings?

    Glavine Progressing Rapidly
By Dan Slowey [January 20 at 8:44pm CST]

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that Tom Glavine’s second session throwing off the mound went significantly better than his first, and that the veteran lefty now feels that he could be ready for the start of the regular season.

Working out his surgically-repaired elbow and shoulder for the second time in four days, Glavine mixed in changeups for the first time, and reported no pain. “If you’d have told me that in the middle of January I would have thrown off the mound a few times and seen this kind of improvement in arm strength, I’d have certainly taken it,” Glavine said.

As for whether or not he anticipates returning to the Braves, Glavine admitted uncertainty. “There’s always a chance that it might not work out because of finances or that they want to go in another direction. I’m not worried about that. I’m just worried about getting to the point where I can pitch again.” The 42-year-old had a 5.54 ERA in 63.1 innings with the Braves in 2008.

I guess. Where I live, not so much. Only like 25% voted for him here. It’s quite sad the division that is here ompared to mainstream America. I’m very excited. I had never given to a campaign before so I am happy that my money didn’t just disappear in a losing campaign. There are things I don’t agree with but I agree more with him than the previous guy.

I just read this breakdown on the NYPost website.
I guess it’s safe to say that we could do a lot worse than Redding:

    Mets’ fifth starters last season:

    Nelson Figueroa - 6 starts: 3-3, 4.57 ERA

    Claudio Vargas - 4 starts: 3-2, 4.62 ERA

    Jon Niese - 3 starts: 1-1, 7.07 ERA

    Brandon Knight - 2 starts: 1-0, 5.25 ERA

    Brian Stokes - 1 start: 1-0, 3.51 ERA

    Tony Armas Jr. - 1 start: 1-0, 7.56 ERA

CANBERRA, Australia – Two desperate, dehydrated men found bobbing in a bathtub-sized cooler off Australia told authorities they spent 25 days adrift after their fishing boat sank, officials said Tuesday. There was no sign of 18 other crew members.

The men apparently lived on monsoon water and fish chunks stored in the cooler.

Authorities were amazed that the men, from the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar, were spotted by a routine customs service flight that patrols for far larger craft such as illegal trawlers in Australia’s northern waters.

A photograph taken from the patrol plane shows the men standing shirtless in the pink cooler — a waist-high container often used to store freshly caught fish — and waving frantically.

The men, 22 and 24, were rescued by helicopter Saturday, Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Tracey Jiggins said. They were treated for dehydration and released Tuesday.

“These two people being spotted is miraculous in itself in the huge expanse of ocean after drifting for 25 days,” Jiggins said.

Authorities have not said what the men ate or drank during their ordeal. Media reports have said they survived on fish chunks that had been stored in the cooler and rain water that pooled on the floor.

The Dodgers signed him. I honestly don’t think there is a better “Fifth starter” out there. He takes the ball whenever, his team is in the game and he is consistant. Trust me when I say, we had the perfect 5th guy and we don’t have him anymore. People haveunrealistic expectations out of their fifth starter. I was one of them. Looking at that slot in the rotation around the NL, I know now that I was wrong.

Do you care that, considering Pedro as a 5th starter, that the Mets were one of two NL teams that saw their scrub pitchers post a .500 record or better.

He then attended Texas A&M University, leading the Aggies to the 1999 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned All-Big 12 honors in both 1998 and 1999, highlighted by a 12–7 record and 3.64 earned run average (ERA) during his junior campaign, establishing a single-season school mark with 162 strikeouts. Fossum also won the C. E. “Pat” Olsen Outstanding Pitcher Award in 1999 and was a second team All-American in 1998.
