    Dodgers Rework Andruw Jones Deal
By Drew Silva [January 2 at 11:55pm CST]

11:55pm: Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times says the deal cuts Jones’ 2009 salary to about $5MM. The Dodgers agreed to trade or release him; interested teams may prefer to wait for the latter. Shaikin says the Jones restructuring is independent of the Manny Ramirez situation.

Bama did a horrible job of representing the SEC. Nice job preparing your team Saban. Way to respond to the Utes public announcements the last two weeks of being the only underfeated team in NCAA by publicly knocking them by saying a week before the Sugar bowl that Bama was the only undefeated regular season team in a powerhouse conf in NCAA. And then after losing to them last night you blame the loss on the fact that although you told your team “100 times” how good Utah was that your team might have taken them too lightly. GEE I WONDER WHY NICK!! Way to think that all you had to do was show up since you were playing Utah in the Sugar Bowl and not Texas. Way to dissapoint your fellow SEC teams Nick!!! Ole Miss stepped to the plate for the conf. and destroyed Texas Tech, one of the most prolific offenses this year.

Again, Nice job Nick, Houston Nutt put his Ole Miss team in the right frame of mind to play a previous #1 and a BIG 12 team no less!!! Now I will have to hear Utah fans in addition to Trojan fans wanting a piece of the Gators title when I wake up on Friday. Well, on the bright side Saban might have taken a few points off the Gators line against OU, making it easier for me to cash in….thanks D-bag!!!

    Olney on Moorad, Peavy, Hoffman
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 3 at 12:00pm CST]

Buster Olney looks at the fallout for the Padres now that former D’Backs CEO Jeff Moorad has agreed in principle to buy the club with the help of some investors.

    * Will the new ownership retain Kevin Towers? Moorad once interviewed the Padres GM for a job with the D’Backs and, as Olney points out, Towers has an “excellent reputation within the industry” so his chances of keeping his job seem good.
    * The sale could give the Padres the financial stability to take Jake Peavy off the market. Peter Gammons wrote today that Cubs GM Jim Hendry “hasn’t given up” on Peavy.
    * Olney suggests it’s possible this change could spark a reconciliation with Trevor Hoffman.
    * Padres CEO Sandy Alderson’s future isn’t certain anymore and neither is Paul DePodesta’s.

I rooted for the Pac-10 teams, like I always do, but that’s because we don’t play in a stupid sissy conference that has unbalanced schedules, every teams plays each other. With every Pac-10 Bowl victory, it made USC look better. I rooted against the SEC with a passion.

Its not only SEC, most other conf do also. Your conference is your family. Internal fighting all the time but when someone picks a fight against a family member you have their back. (Ole Miss) You also get on them when they disgrace your family (Bama)

Look at March Madness. If you are a Syracuse fan, or St. John’s fan, etc. you are pulling for the BIG EAST to dominate the brackets.

The Bowl season makes it easy, because you want the conference to do well, and it doesn’t effect your team at all.

You want the conference to be as strong as possible.

I rooted for the Pac-10 teams, like I always do, but that’s because we don’t play in a stupid sissy conference that has unbalanced schedules, every teams plays each other.

LOL…Hey, just a reminder, the SEC has a championship game for their two divisions. And BTW…Gators played all 7 bowl eligible SEC teams this year, nice try.
    ______
And out of the 7 SEC bowl eligible teams not named Florida this is how they faired in the bowls.

The Bama v Utah (31-17) loss sucked for the SEC, South Carolina’s QB(s) sucks had no chance against a good Iowa team (31-10) (thanks again for beating Penn St)

    However:

Unranked LSU spanking #14 Ga Tech 38-3 at a de facto Ga Tech home game 3 miles from their campus.

#20 ranked Ole Miss dominating #8 Texas Tech 47-34 in Dallas (Ole Miss held the explosive TT offense to ony 27 points)

    SEC’s avg Joe’s Vandy beating BC, the ACC’s runner-up.

Kentucky beating East Carolina (who beat Virginia Tech- ACC Champ)

#16 Georgia beating #19 Mich St soundly 24-12

    __________
This is how all 7 SEC bowl teams did against Florida this year(check out the lop sided scores) :

    Ole Miss (L) 31-30
    Alabama (W)31-20
    South Carolina (W)56-6
    LSU (W) 51-21
    Vandy (W) 42-14
    Kentucky (W)63-5
    Georgia (W)49-10

And some still think Florida should not be playing in the BCS Championship???

I don’t think anyone should be playing for a championship unless they’ve made it there through a playoff.

Florida beat one top team all season, Alabama. Alabama has shown they were a pretender who feasted on a soft schedule.

Florida lost at home to Ole Miss. USC lost away at Oregon State. Which loss is worse? USC beat Ohio State. It’s not USC’s fault that they scheduled usually solid OOC teams like Virginia and Notre Dame and those teams were poor this year.

USC also could have benefited if they were in an SEC system to avoid playing either Wash or WashSt, which would have brought their SOS up.

I’m an ACC guy and I just don’t root for anyone besides my own team (MD), not even in basketball where it actually means something (since conference strength has some effect on tournament bids and the ACC is usually the #1 or 2 conference)…I just get the impression that conference pride means much much more for SEC football fans than others, JMO though

I root for the Pac-10 teams in basketball too, though I have issues with UCLA of course.

Basketball is a little different, 65 teams theoretically have a chance to win the title. Football is way different and the polls mean so much because they actually determine who plays where.

#16 Georgia beating #19 Mich St soundly 24-12

Although I rooted for Georgia in this game, they did not win that game soundly. It was a 6-3 Mich St score at halftime and was a one score game in the 4th. For the weapons they have on offense and Michigan St’s lackluster defense, this should of been a blowout. A win is a win though.

Florida is my favorite to win the national championship. I’m rooting for Oklahoma but I don’t think they will win. I don’t think the Big 12 knew how to play defense this year. I watched Texas Tech and Okla St go down to teams they should of beaten based on their ranking.

Kentucky shouldn’t of been in a bowl. 2-6 in your conference should be a disqualify any team from playing a bowl.

I don’t think anyone should be playing for a championship unless they’ve made it there through a playoff.

I would completely understand this if I was a USC, Texas, or Utah fan. I agree, going forward their should be a playoff. I would love to see a 6 team playoff, think AFC or NFC playoff. #1 and #2 BCS ranked teams at the end of the season get first round byes.

    First round
    #3 plays #6 (ROSE BOWL)
    #4 plays #4 (FIESTA BOWL

    Second round
#1 plays better seed (SUGAR BOWL)
#2 plays worse seed (ORANGE BOWL)

    BCS Championship BOWL Game

(these bowl games would rotate each year, the Rose bowl, etc. would have to obviously give up their traditional opponents to use this method but I think a 6 team playoff would be better than a 4 since a team like USC would of got snubbed. This way a #1 and #2 would be rewarded with a bye week and you get the same amount of BCS bowl games.) In this format first round would pair: Texas v Utah and USC v Bama. Not bad.

Florida lost at home to Ole Miss. USC lost away at Oregon State. Which loss is worse? USC beat Ohio State. It’s not USC’s fault that they scheduled usually solid OOC teams like Virginia and Notre Dame and those teams were poor this year.

Its a tough one. You can defend Oregon State by saying they only lost to Penn St Utah and I can’t recall. However I can tell you that Ole Miss won their last 6 games and their 4 losses were only by a total of 16 points with no one beating them by more than one score (7 pts) And for whatever this is worth Florida had no idea Ole Miss was that good, they completely overlooked them at home after spanking Tennessee in Tenn. Meanwhile USC has stumbled before to Oregon St and still lost to them anyways.

USC also could have benefited if they were in an SEC system to avoid playing either Wash or WashSt, which would have brought their SOS up.

I agree. Whether its an east coast biased or not USC has more added pressure on them to go undefeated each year to make it to the Championship, especially when ND sucks and even with destroying Ohio State.

    you know what I meant…

#4 plays #5……#1 plays lower seed, #2 plays higher seed.

I would seriously love to have this.

Play the first round on Christmas. Play the second round 7 dayslater on Jan.1, then wait till the NFL off week (Between the AFC/NFC Conf and Superbowl in late Jan) to play the BCS Bowl. Or if that is too long just play a week or 2 after New Years

    blasphemer.
    Saban overlooked the Utes.
He unnecessarily benched his left guard which made it impossible for them to rebound from a quick 21-0 hole.

Utah would get smoked if they played Florida.

BTW….if it wasn’t for Florida beating Bama and showing Utah Bama’s underbelly they wouldn’t have had that much success. Plus, although Urban Meyer is an SEC coach, no doubt he got a call from Utah (his old team)and spilled some beans on how to beat them. Urban Meyer is ALL about speed. He recruits SPEED DEMONS. Gators have 14 guys that run under A 4.4. He did the same while coaching Utah. Those seniors that beat Bama last night were Urban Meyer’s players he recruited!!! Utah is a step behind the Gators, although they have a greta plan.

I would continue to wait this out, but if some team wants to give Lowe $16M a season, Ollie is looking more realistic.

Tonight on the MLB Network’s Hot Stove Live, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said Derek Lowe rejected Omar Minaya’s three-year, $36 million offer, because he is seeking $16 million per season.

According to Heyman, the Phillies and Braves are Minaya’s ‘biggest threat for Lowe,’ while the Red Sox and a ‘mystery team,’ like the Brewers, are showing interest as well.

Later in the show, Minaya was interviewed and acknowledged having interest in Lowe, as well as Randy Wolf, among other free-agent starting pitchers.

Oddly, Minaya didn’t mention Oliver Perez by name.

Smells like a typical Boras bluff. Obviously if the Phillies are involved it would tip the scales and make the Mets shell out more wampum and from what I’ve heard the Phillies are content with pitching.

Well, if the Braves had money to go after Burnett, they probably have at least some cash floating around. Unless they’ve spent it on someone I’ve forgot. Or if they’ve tied up a lot of it with Javier Vazquez.

Dude, the Braves owners parent, Media “something”, has hit the financial skids since Burnett. They would be happy if they could afford their cuurent payroll. Don’t worry bro, I know this.

I believe that those teams would go after Lowe, yeah… IF the price went down to the range the Mets are offering in or lower.

Anyway, if it backfires, I prefer Ollie’s youth anyway.

Busy, busy holidays! They last about 2 months and then they are gone in a matter of days.

    So glad.

    Hope everyone enjoyed theirs!

haha you like my ghetto 71.

Hey, just caught the end of the Colts/Charger game. What a crock of BS. They called holding on the Colts. In the replay he was holding the receiver until 6 yds after the line of scrimmage. How the F do you call a penalty on a hold that goes one yard over what is defined as a penalty with 2 minutes left???? That was BS!!!!!

That is why I hate the NFL. Thats was not holding!!! He held for not even a ful extra yard…..and they call a penalty with less than two minutes on a 3rd down play???? Thats BS.

    Manny Ramirez Rumors: Saturday
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 3 at 10:11pm CST]

10:11pm: Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the Giants want to wait until the corner outfield market is “more precisely defined” before pursuing Manny. He adds that the Giants are unlikely to enter a bidding war so they need more financial flexibility than usual from Boras.

    @littlefallsmets:

maybe they start talking to ollie to get lowes attention? who would he have if not the mets?
