Temps are forecast to reach a bone-chilling 20 degrees by midnight. Factor in 50-mph winds and a wintry mix of rain and snow showers, and it will feel more like minus-4 - well below the point when frostbite becomes a danger.

I like the finish on the LCD v. the Plasma, MFS. Maybe it depends on how your lighting is in the room, but in the stores the Plasma seems like it has more glare on it - almost like a glossy photo finish as opposed to a matte finish.

12:44pm: Levine says the three minor league pitchers coming to Chicago for DeRosa are Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer, and John Gaub. The move feels like a salary dump - of a player whose production was worth $19.4MM this year.

A note from Bruce Miles: the Cubs’ ownership situation will have to be settled before the Cubs are able to complete a Peavy trade. Levine says the same in his post.

WEDNESDAY NOON: Viacom has rejected Time Warner Cable’s request for a 15- to 30-day extension on the 12:01 AM January 1st deadline when the cable programmer pulls its 19 channels off the 2nd largest cable system operator. I’m told Viacom and TWC had no contact throughout yesterday until news of the Big Media battle broke. Suddenly, at 8 PM, TWC came to Viacom with an increase offer and the extension request. But Viacom rejected both out of hand. “It was bogus. The low-ball offer was clearly an excuse to ask for an extension and then use that in their press acrtivity today,” a Viacom source claimed to me. “After we’ve been trying to meet with them for several weeks, we won’t consider an extension unless they’re prepared to really negotiate and come across with a reasonable offer.” Insiders say Viacom President/CEO Philippe Dauman stayed in his office most of today waiting to hear from his TWC counterpart Glenn Britt, but the situation remains stalled. This is turning out to be Big Media brinkmanship at its most brutal with 13.3 million cable subscribers caught in the middle.

Viacom has now answered the bashing by TWC’s Britt:

Time Warner Cable’s continued rhetoric and posturing is disappointing and unproductive. We have made it clear that we welcome a credible and meaningful discussion that respects our viewers and the value our programming brings to Time Warner Cable. We remain ready and willing to engage. It’s time for serious talk – before the viewers become the victims.

back when i got plasma 5 yrs ago or whatever it was i had 2 issues with LCDs

    1. they had issues if you werent viewing the screen directly head-on.

    2. they didnt look quite as good as plasmas (imo)

These days, both of these problems no longer exist imo so i went LCD. i still like plasmas and have absolutely nothing agsinst them, they’re awesome, but LCDs are cheaper and just as good these days imo.

Also, LCD’s are lighter weight, display computer text better, and consume half the power of plasmas. You don’t get as much glare from lighting either. I think plasmas will eventually get pushed out by LCDs, or maybe become just a specialty item.

    BTW, Happy New Year geeks!

LOWE TO KEEP SHOPPING; SOX NOT INVOLVED

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff December 31, 2008 05:56 PM

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Derek Lowe is likely to continue shopping for a more desirable offer after the New York Mets presented him with a three-year, $36 million offer on Tuesday.

While some reports have placed Lowe’s target in the range of five years and $90 million, a much more probable outcome is that Lowe ends up with a three- or four-year deal worth in the rage of $14-$15 million annually. It was unclear whether the Mets’ proposal included any type of option, but the sides last week were discussing a pair of proposals, one being a four-year offer and the other being a three-year proposal with a vesting option.

Part of the reason the Mets may have entered the bidding with a relatively conservative offer is because they believe Lowe has no other suitors in the Northeast, where the pitcher has expressed a desire to pitch. The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies had only preliminary conversations with Lowe and none of those clubs is believed to be interested in the pitcher at this time.
