Source: Cowher, Jets still to talk
    ESPN.com news services

Jets And Bill Cowher Still Plan On Speaking
The door to the New York Jets’ opening might not be closed for Bill Cowher just yet after all.

A high-ranking Jets official told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the team is still planning to speak to Cowher about its vacant head coaching job. No time or place for the interview has been set, but the official says the Jets would be willing to do “whatever is necessary” to land Cowher if he is truly interested in taking the job.

Cowher plans to speak publicly for the first time about the Jets’ opening and other coaching opportunities during CBS’ wild-card pregame show on Sunday, a source told 1050 ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand.

Initially, ESPN.com’s John Clayton reported Cowher told the Jets he was not interested because he wanted his own personnel director. The Jets official’s response indicates the team is willing to let Cowher replace current general manager Mike Tannenbaum with his own candidate.

A Jets source also said Tannenbaum says he’s willing to adjust his position to accommodate Cowher.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

If Cowher doesn’t take an open NFL head coaching job this offseason, he does plan to coach in 2010, sources told Clayton. In 2009, though, he is willing to return only if every situation is right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns’ head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with family, Cowher didn’t give Lerner a price, and said no.

Cowher, 51, was 161-99-1 in 15 seasons with Pittsburgh, including a Super Bowl win in 2006.

Another reason that Cowher would be a great pickup for the Jets is because he is a believer in the 3-4 defense. A defense and defensive personnel the team currently has.

I’ll cry if we switch back to a 4-3 after trading most of the players that fit that system better

No Spags to the Broncos. That would be terrible. A smart defensive-minded coach for the Broncos would be disastrous for the Chargers, my B team. And sucky for my A team.

I say boo to Spags going anywhere, but if I was him, I’d be thinking, hey, I could do a lot worse than that one.

ESPN’s Steve Phillips is reporting that the Cubs are close to sending Jason Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.
Some cash almost certainly would be involved as well. This is a lot more about the Cubs wanting to dump Marquis than it is any desire for Vizcaino. With an open rotation spot, they could well enter the mix for Derek Lowe or Randy Wolf. It seems unlikely that the Jake Peavy talks will be revisited.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Steve Phillips of ESPN.com is reporting the Cubs are close to trading RHP Jason Marquis to the Rockies for RHP Luis Vizcaino.

I wanted Marquis. He is a solid #5 in terms of IP. Without him and John Maine reinjuring his shoulder, hip, etc. our pen in Aug and Sept will resemble Kris Jenkins in December 08…..not fat, but spent.

Better hope Omar lands Ollie and Lowe. If I had it my way I would get Ollie, Lowe, Marquis, and trade for Matt Capps.

    I’m out!!

TUESDAY, 7:03PM: It looks as though the first of the Mets’ offers has been issued.

According to Jack Curry of the New York Times, the Mets have offered Derek Lowe a 3-year deal, worth a total of $36MM. The article maintains the current notion that Derek Lowe is the Mets’ first choice to bolster their rotation.

This offer is significantly under the 5-year, $90MM Lowe had reportedly been seeking.

the Mets offered exactly what they should have
they’re using the same method they used with KRod
you start low(e) and wait for a counter offer
    then haggle back and forth

I don’t know why ppl & the media don’t get the fact this is how any deal starts
(unless you’re the Yankees where you grossly overbid against yourself)

ps - no offense meant at all to you, Confused

UNHAPPY NEW YEAR! Time Warner Cable To Yank MTV, Nickelodeon & Comedy Central Off The Air In NY, LA, Everywhere
From Nikki Finke’s LA Weekly ‘Deadline Hollywood’ Blog - December 30, 2008

It turns out that Viacom has been trying to negotiate a renewal for months and months now, but reputedly Time Warner has been unresponsive. What the hell? So now at midnight, as the ball drops oin Time Square, so will gazillions of Time warner Cable subscribers lose 19 Viacom channels. The howling starts here, especially by parents home for the holidays with children who won’t have their favorite shows to watch SpongeBob and Dora, and tweens and teens wanting to see new episodes of those new unreality Reality TV series The City and Bromance. This affects all U.S. Time Warner cable subscribes including the New York and Los Angeles. Seriously, are these guys nuts? This will either end fast or go on forever. It probably will depend on how many subscribers start flooding Time Warner Cable with obscene calls. This is Viacom’s statement:

Statement from Viacom: This move by Time Warner Cable to force such channels as Nickelodeon, COMEDY CENTRAL and MTV off the air is another example of a cable company overreaching for profit at the expense of its viewers. The renewal we are seeking is reasonable and modest relative to the profits TWC enjoys from our networks. We have asked for an increase of less than 25 cents per month, per subscriber, which adds up to less than a penny per day for all 19 of MTV Networks’ channels. We make this request because TWC has so greatly undervalued our channels for so long. Americans spend more than 20% of their TV viewing time watching our networks, yet our fees amount to less than 2.5% of what Time Warner generates from their average customer.Throughout the country, we have negotiated equitable license agreement renewals, or are in the final stages of renewals, with virtually every cable and satellite carrier. Nevertheless, Time Warner Cable has dismissed our efforts at a fair compromise and has effectively chosen to deny its customers some of the most popular TV shows on the air. As a result, we are sorry to say that for Time Warner Cable customers our networks will go dark as of 12:01 on January 1st , denying Time Warner customers shows like Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, and The Hills.Ultimately, however, if Nickelodeon, COMEDY CENTRAL, MTV and the rest of our programming is discontinued – over less than a penny per day - we believe viewers will see this behavior by their cable company as outrageous. Time Warner Cable subscribers who are being handed a January 1st $3 monthly increase in Raleigh, Orange County, Los Angeles, and New York City are simultaneously facing the removal of beloved shows across 19 channels. We find it a shame that Time Warner Cable remains unreasonable at this time. We hope its leadership will have a change of heart and will seek to negotiate a fair renewal agreement.

Boras Contacts Dodgers To Discuss Manny
By Alex Walsh [December 30 at 8:48pm CST]

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that Scott Boras has contacted Dodgers GM Ned Colletti regarding the future of his superstar client Manny Ramirez.

The contact was likely motivated by a recent Times piece that quoted Colletti as saying Ramirez was the Dodgers’ “first choice.” Boras may be feeling pressure to get a deal done for his client, as recent rumors have connected the Dodgers to Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu. If the Dodgers were to sign one of those free agents, they would likely no longer be interested in Ramirez.

With the list of potential suitors for Manny already shrinking, taking the Dodgers out of the picture would probably force some creative thinking on the part of Scott Boras to get his client signed.

    No no, Dodgers, sign Dunn!

Sign Dunn so that Minaya doesn’t get any goddamned ideas!
