Did you all notice how much the Jets suck cullo?

Sorry, no. I’m too busy noticing how awesome the G-men are.

Yeah sorry, I’m not reveling in the Jets doing badly. I’m concentrating on the Giants.

    That’s what quality people do.

HAHAHA. The Giants are pretty good as long as they stay committed to running the ball. Eli Manning would scare the bejesus out of me late in games if I were a Giants fan.

Speaking of quality people…did anyone hear about or see this:

As if serving as the head coach for a 0-15 team wasn’t bad enough, now Lions coach Rod Marinelli has to deal with smart-aleck questions from newspaper columnists. After his team’s 42-7 drubbing Sunday at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, Rod Marinelli was taking questions about the woeful state of his team’s defense, which is led by Marinelli’s son-in-law, Joe Barry. This led to the following exchange:

That’s Detroit News columnist Rob Parker asking Marinelli, “On a light note, seriously, do you wish your daughter had married a better defensive coordinator?”

You stay classy, Rob Parker. I’m all for questioning coaching nepotism, but it has to be done with legitimate questions, not queries that are asked with the sole purpose of mocking.

The guys on FOX tee off on Parker (whose bio says he “is a sports columnist for the Detoit [sic] News”), with Terry Bradshaw calling him “a flat idiot” and Michael Strahan calling for his termination. Howie Long gets it right by saying that Marinelli’s coaching deserves to be questioned, but not in such a flippant, disrespectful manner.

My main problem with the question is that Parker brings Marinelli’s daughter into the discussion. There were many better and more clever ways to rip on Joe Barry without having to resort to take the family route. Parker is lucky Marinelli didn’t come off the podium and give him the business. The Lions coach might be 59-years old, but I’m guessing the Vietnam veteran still has plenty of fight left in him and, after watching that game, plenty of pent-up aggression.

    Video thanks: Awful Announcing

Update: Some of our commenters note that Parker was caught earlier this year making up stories about Michigan State football players.

Eli almost threw the ball away around 3-5 times last night late in the game. He was sooooo lucky that Ward had a monster game running the ball and that his line is ooooooh so sweet.

  10. Comment posted by Bob Loblaw on December 22, 2008 at 3:48 pm (#911728)

There have been quite a few dropped INT’s these past 3 weeks, Ramon (not to mention Assante’s in the SB last year) - no doubt about that. But, like Eli, I’d rather be lucky than good. Or be pretty good and then really lucky, or something.

  12. Comment posted by Ramon on December 22, 2008 at 3:53 pm (#911730)

Bob, I will say this: Eli is having his best season in my opinion. He has had to do more with less than he ever had to in his career. His completion percentage is very good right now at around 60% and his TD to INT ratio is better than its ever been. But then again, you could probably attribute this to the fact that Coughlin isn’t trying to run the offense through the kid like he did in the past. Right now the rush is king for the G-Men and with their nasty line and league best running back combination they can win it all with just that. I just hope Eli doesn’t give away the game and manages it well.

The G-men got lucky in overtime when one of Carolina’s defenders tipped an over-thrown pass that was about to fall into the arms of another defender.

Would have been a surefire pick and given Carolina the ball well within FG range.

But, good teams take advantage of breaks — the Jets ain’t a good team I am sorry to say.

    Ain’t that the truth….

And this was supposed to be their season in the division with a Brady-less Pats team and a rebuilding Dolphins squad as their only real comp.

The Giants are soooooo the class of the NFC its not even funny.

I like Carolina and had a thing for the Eagles, but the Giants are too well coached and talented at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to not at least make it to the SB.

Phillips should be gone IMO even if they do clinch a WC birth. They were predicted to win HF advantage and compete for the whole enchilada. With all of their overhyped talent and money, the Cowgirls look like just like America’s Team–overpaid, underachieving, and broke down.

But then again neither he nor Giants management would allow such a fiasco to happen and THAT is why the Giants are where they are as THE class organization in the NFC only rivaled in the entire NFL by Pittsburg and New England while the Cowgirls are a gluttonous, decadent waste of space and resources.

“The Shield” star Michael Chiklis is staying in the FX fold, moving behind the camera to develop a series about a Ponzi scheme.

The project, called “House of Cards,” will focus on a group of people running a complicated scam similar to the one that investment advisor Bernard Madoff is accused of orchestrating. Madoff’s alleged scheme, one of the largest in history, reportedly has cost investors as much as $50 billion.

Chiklis has been working on the idea for most of the past year, the showbiz trade papers report. He and his wife were victims of a smaller-scale Ponzi scheme, and he wants to explore the type of character it takes to pull off such a fraud.

FX is searching for a writer on the project and expects to have one on board in the near future. Chiklis will be an executive producer of “House of Cards” but isn’t expected to appear on camera.

“I have been very passionate about this project,” Chiklis tells Variety. “This is something I want to fast track and get done. I think its time has come, and someone’s going to get out there with it.”

The show is Chiklis’ first crack at shepherding a project from its beginning stages. He was credited as a producer on “The Shield” in its latter seasons.

    • Actress Dina Meyer (Beverly Hills, 90210, Point Pleasant) has been cast as the former fiancé of Jeffrey Donovan’s Michael on Burn Notice. She’ll show up in the season 2 finale on March 5.

    • More fresh blood! Wes Brown (We Are Marshall) is the latest addition to True Blood’s season 2 ensemble. He’ll play Luke, a God-obsessed hunk that bonds with Jason (Ryan Kwanten) at a church camp, in at least six episodes.

What if Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte didn’t frequent their estheticians quite as often? You might end up with Bitches, the dramedy project now in development at Fox.

Bitches, says the Reporter, revolves around four female friends in New York City whose bad time of the month is, like, seriously bad, seeing as they are all werewolves. (Damn that full moon.) This “quirky urban fairy tale” is being penned by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘R Treat, X2: X-Men United) and, should it get greenlit to series, will be exec-produced by Pushing Daisies’ Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

Werewolves, of course, are the new vampires come the new year, which will bring us Benicio del Toro’s (presumably make-up-free?) Wolfman remake and the lycanthropic Twilight sequel, New Moon.

Watch your backs, Nancy Botwin and Walter White. There’s another parent-turned-felon coming to town.

HBO has signed ER alum turned indie queen Maria Bello to develop and star in a new series from scribe Gary Lennon (The Shield, The Unusuals).

The as-yet-untitled drama will star Bello as a mother of three teenage boys who turns to a life of crime after her husband is killed. Skipping over the first few seasons of Weeds, however, Bello’s alter ego will immediately recruit her kids as henchmen, “leading them all down a destructive road” (says Variety).

Bello will exec-produce the series with Lennon, Gavin Polone and John Carrabino.

3:34pm: Impactivo Deportivo sticks to its guns despite the Cashman denial.

MONDAY, 8:27am: MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch asked Yankees GM Brian Cashman about this report. Cashman responded: “Not true.”

SUNDAY, 10:53pm: According to a report in the Dominican newspaper Impacto Deportivo, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez to a three-year, $75MM deal. The report says negotiations are advanced and an announcement would take place Monday or Tuesday. If true, this would be an incredible scoop. However, there is reason for skepticism. The money and timing just don’t seem right.

A look at Impacto Deportivo’s recent history:

    * 11/24/08: Reported the Braves as the mystery team in on Rafael Furcal, offering four years and $52MM. The offer was inaccurate, but they did nail the mystery team.
    * 11/12/08: Correctly scooped the Damaso Marte signing.
    * 2/21/08: Incorrectly indicated the White Sox reached an agreement with Bartolo Colon. Also incorrect on a similar rumor involving the Royals.
    * 1/21/08: Correctly scooped the Octavio Dotel signing.
    * 11/18/07: Correctly scooped the Luis Castillo signing.

There are no easy answers when it comes to agents 12.21.08 at 9:50 pm ET
    By Curt Schilling

Answering a few questions from our site editor, Rob Bradford, regarding the world of agents …

Bradford: When you hear about the kind of negotiations Mark Teixeira is going through, what stands out?

Me: The mass of misinformation everyone works off of. So little of the facts are ever really that. It’s the ultimate form of second-hand information and in many cases you get people making ‘educated’ guesses, figuring if they’re wrong, so what, but if they are right they ‘broke’ the story.

Bradford: How much interaction with Scott Boras have you had, if any? Did you ever contemplate joining forces with him?

Me: Almost none other than going up against him on a talk show in Philly after the JD Drew draft. I’ve thought about it when thinking about next season. Bottom line is if you want to scrap every penny you can from the bottom of the barrel, leave nothing on the table, he’s your guy. That being said I’ve spoken at length with Jason about him, a guy I have a ton of respect for, and Jason considers him a very close friend, so that means something to me.

Bradford: When is important to have an agent?

Me: When you are drafted. When you go to arbitration. The first time you become a free agent. Every time you become a free agent after that if you CANNOT handle the pressure of a negotiation yourself, or if you are not comfortable with any parts of negotiating on your behalf.

Bradford: When should a player contemplate going without an agent?

Me: Depends on the player really. If you are smart enough and pay attention to the market you could consider your first go-around in free agency (though I think I might only recommend that for a college drafted player if at all) but more often than not your second free agent go around would likely be better.

Bradford: What characteristics do players look for when selecting agents?

Me: I hired my second and last agent and went into that process with really only one hard piece of criteria. I told myself I’d interview the 30-plus agents and after the first interviews I’d pare it down and eliminate anyone in the first round that bad mouthed another agent or agency in any way. After 30 some interviews there was only one agency that didn’t do that.

Bradford: How much control does an agent have over the process?

Me: Again that is player dependant. Some agents run the entire process at the players request, others serve as go betweens and advisors. Depends on what you want for your percent.

Keep sending in questions – either on this page, or in the comments section — for a mailbag (coming in the not-so-distant-future).

Nationals pitcher Collin Balester calls it - World Series sweep if they sign Mark Teixeira. Balester keeps a blog here, check it out.

    Sweep. Four Games. “See Ya.”

My oh my, stakes are high for the Nats. Sure, they haven’t yet gotten word on their $160 million potential investment, but while they wait, they’re at least getting an equally hefty dose of, um, bravado.

Every month, Washington pitcher Collin Balester appears on a satellite radio show (MLB Home Plate, Sirius 210 and XM 175). It’s called “Minors & Majors with Grant Paulsen.” When Paulsen asked Ballester this week about his feelings if the Nationals sign Mark Teixeira, here’s what Balester said…

“If that happens it’s going to be a dream come true. That guy is a great player and if he comes to the nation’s capitol, watch out, we’re going to the World Series and we are winning it all. I’m calling it right now. We’re playing four games in the World Series, sweep, see ya!”

(The small print on this item: For all the grandeur of Teixeira’s first six seasons, he’s never played for a team that has won a playoff series.)

In Teixeira news of a less bombastic proportions, it does indeed look like the Angels are out of the running for good. The team has confirmed it without hedging. As Buster Olney writes in his blog today, “It seems that the [Teixeira] game has played itself out, the last cards have been dealt, and now Teixeira is in position to make his decision.”

Description of Eliza Dushku’s new movie, The Alphabet Killer (NO spoilers):

A ten year old girl is found brutally murdered outside the small blue-collar city of Rochester, New York, and obsessed police detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and DOLLHOUSE) suffers a mental breakdown while trying to solve the crime. But when the child-killings resume two years later, Megan’s return to the investigation also brings back her own horrific hallucinations. Even if she can prove a ‘double initial’ connection to the slayings, will she hang onto her sanity long enough to catch a psychopath? Cary Elwes (SAW), Michael Ironside (STARSHIP TROOPERS), Bill Moseley (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS), Carl Lumbly (ALIAS) and Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton co-star in this chilling thriller directed by Rob Schmidt and based on the true story of the murders that shocked America.

The trailer looks pretty damn creepy.

Burress was driving without insurance before crash

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP)—Add this to the growing list of Plaxico Burress’ problems: getting in a car crash and not having insurance on his nearly $140,000 Mercedes-Benz.

The suspended New York Giants wide receiver was sued last week in Florida’s Broward County Circuit Court for rear-ending a woman in May.

Compounding the Super Bowl star’s defense, according to a document provided by the woman’s attorney, is the fact his car insurance lapsed three days before the crash. A letter from Allstate says Burress neglected to pay his premiums.

Burress’ attorney, Adam Swickle, declined comment.

Burress is still serving a team suspension for shooting himself Nov. 29 in a nightclub with an illegally carried handgun. Burress shot himself at the Latin Quarter when he accidentally pulled the trigger on the .40-caliber Glock that was in his pants after fumbling a drink.

Teammate Antonio Pierce took the 31-year-old who caught the winning pass in the Super Bowl to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment.

Burress pleaded not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail. He is due back in court March 31.

He was placed on the team’s suspended/non-football injury list, and the NFL Players Association filed a grievance. The union said the Giants violated the collective bargaining agreement when they placed Burress on that list, suspended him for the final four games of the regular season and fined him an additional week’s salary for conduct detrimental to the team.

2008 is almost over, but you won’t hear any boo-hoos from us; the first three months of ‘09 have us excited for these shows.

    Sam and Sock of Reaper
Midseason used to be the time when networks dumped junk on viewers. It was the betamax of the television season, but no more–early 2009 promises some great returns and some promising debuts. We count down the 10 shows we’re looking most forward to in the first three months of the year…and it looks like we’ll have plenty to watch!

    10. Damages season two
The second season of this FX gem adds William Hurt to the mix as a person from Patty Hewes’ past. Season one started with Ellen walking down the street covered in blood. How will season two start? And how is this all the way down at number 10?
Season two begins January 7 on FX

    9. Reaper season two
Some say that Reaper was the best new show of 2007, and we can buy that argument (even though it was almost canceled). Mixing sci-fi, comedy, drama, and, most importantly, Satan, Reaper is one underdog we hope lasts a long time.
Season two debuts March 17 on The CW

    8. American Idol edition eight
How can we not have American Idol on this list? The reality phenomenon is pop culture and dictates water-cooler discussion as long as it’s on. Besides, don’t you want a preview of who will be singing next year’s top-selling Christmas album?
Season eight kicks off January 13 on Fox

    7. Dollhouse series debut
Two words: Joss Whedon. Wait, make that four words: Eliza Dushku. Whedon is a masterful storyteller, Dushku is a sci-fi geek’s dream, and the plot is wide open for all sorts of settings. Early bad buzz knocks this down to number seven, but we still think it’ll be just fine.
Series premieres February 13 on Fox

You don’t know King Silas yet, but you will.

    6. Flight of the Conchords season two
Bret and Jemaine are hilarious, talented, and, let’s face it, adorably cute. A year and a half ago, no one knew who they were; now tickets for their shows are selling out in minutes. The funniest thing on HBO since Mr. Show.
Season two premieres January 18 on HBO

    5. Kings series debut
We have our fingers crossed so tightly for this one they’re broken. A preview at Comic-Con left our jaws on the floor, and NBC is very high on this modern-day take on David and Goliath. And with Ian McShane on board, we know it’s going to be intense. Can Kings save NBC? We’ll be tuned in to find out.
Series premieres March 19 on NBC

    4. 24 season seven
It’s been too long since day six ended, and with the year off, producers were able to go back and make sure season seven was top notch. 24: Redemption was an appetizer for what’s in store: no more CTU and the return of Tony Almeida.
Season seven premieres January 11 on Fox

    3. Breaking Bad season two
For seven gritty, peek-through-your-hands episodes, strike-shortened season one of AMC’s Breaking Bad totally caught us by surprise. Bryan Cranston delivered the performance of the year as Walter White, and Aaron Paul became one of our new favorite faces. And what’s not to like about a chemistry teacher making crystal meth to pay his oncologist bills?
Season two is slated for March on AMC

    2. Battlestar Galactica finale
Haters will say, “I don’t like science-fiction,” but they’re missing the point. Battlestar is one of the best dramas–spaceships or no spaceships–to come to television in a long, long time. The series ends in March, and we’re still waiting for that one last question to be answered.
Season 4.5 begins January 18, and the series finale is scheduled for March 20 on Sci-Fi Channel

    1. Lost season five
Ahem, pardon me while I ask, “WHERE and WHEN is the f%@*ing island!??!?!?!?”
Season five premieres January 21 on ABC

Yankees agreed to terms with RHP Chien-Ming Wang on a one-year, $5 million contract.

Wang settles for a $1 million raise after missing more of half of last season with his foot injury. He was 8-2 with a 4.07 ERA before going down. Had he kept up that kind of pace, he could have been in line for around $7 million in arbitration. Wang was a super-two player last year, so he’s not going to be eligible for free agency until after 2011.

7:20pm: Roch Kubatko of MASN Online learned from multiple sources that the Nationals “have sweetened their proposal to Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178-184MM.” He’s been told they’re willing to go nine years and there’s been talk of ten.

No, Bob. Apparently they are very happy with his work, think it’s top-notch. (I think he does more than some of his colleagues combined!) They’d just don’t want him to spend so much - or any? - time online. He’s supposed to be a role model!

I can’t believe how these guys can seriously go out there and play football in weather like they’ve got in Chicago tonight. I can’t hardly stand to just exist in weather like that for more than a minute, and these guys are falling all over the place and smacking the crap out of each other. I find that truly amazing and inspirational.

8:07pm: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says baseball people expect Teixeira to sign before Thursday. Rival execs see the Red Sox as the favorite. The Orioles and Nationals remain engaged; the Yankees are the wild card. Heyman says the Yanks would only want to spend slightly more than the $161MM they committed to C.C. Sabathia.

In a post to his blog, On Baseball, long-time writer Murray Chass blogs about the Mets, blogging, while the Mets are interested in Derek Lowe, ‘they aren’t interested in adding another big contract.’

Chass further blogs, “Omar Minaya is good at playing a waiting game.

i have said this b4, but im ready to say goodbye to ollie. i would take lowe, but he might be out of the mets price range. and it seems nothing will get done until lowe/boras decide to do something. and it looks like boras is busy right now.

but having said that about ollie, i will welcome him back if they cant get lowe.

i would rather neise and parnell be the 6th option out of spring training. some low cost 5th would be okay with me. i dont know who that is though. redding, wolf?

I think that I would prefer Ollie, but that is not an informed decision. I’d also be happy with Lowe, but I tend to be a “devil you know” kind of person and these large pitching contracts make me nervous.

I haven’t done much to increase my understanding of Lowe, so it would take very little to persuade me that Lowe is the better choice.
