It looks like the Francisco Rodriguez deal is official. Considering we were all worried about a five-year, $75 million deal a few weeks ago, this doesn’t look too bad:
The New York Mets agreed to a three-year deal with free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez, a source told ESPN on Tuesday.
Rodriguez’s deal, worth $37 million plus additional incentives, is pending a physical. It is a one-year increase over the two years and $24 million the Mets are said to have initially offered the closer, who broke the major league single-season saves record last season with 62.
While I typically don’t love long-term deals for pitchers, the vesting option is insurance in case K-Rod gets seriously hurt at some point. And while his peripherals are declining, he’ll only be 31 when the option expires, so he still figures to be a good closer for the entirety of the contract.
The signing also guarantees that the Mets will surrender their first-round draft pick, which doesn’t exactly surprise me. Luckily, they should receive a pick (either a first- or second-rounder) once Oliver Perez signs with another team.
They still need some more bullpen help and another starter–at the very least–so Omar Minaya’s work isn’t done yet.
What do you guys think about the Mets’ new closer?
I will go on record as supporting the years, money and vesting option. Omar played this first move well.
There’s a lot of work left to do.
Look’s like a great deal for the Mets. Good job Omar.
Solid.
good job omar.
onto steps 2-14 of the offseason plan now.
I think Ollie needs to be brought back. there is nothing else out there and Garland/Niese or ‘Dro at the back end is a disaster waiting to happen
yahooooooo!
This is a great start.
Now work from the closer backwards and start by getting Street to setup.
I doubt if borass lets that happen, he will hold Ollie back until CC, Burnett, Lowe, Sheets, etc. have signed, and try to get teams still needing pitching to start a bidding war. Omar probably won’t wait that long.
Viva Omar!
Now if only we can bring Willie back to talk some sense into K-Rod regarding how to act after a win.
Bob Loblaw? Shouldn’t you be updating your Law Blog?
Great move Omar. Use the cash saved to eat some of Castillo’s contract and get him out of here.
If the Mets can’t/won’t acquire Peavy then I want Ollie back as well. He’s young enough (28) and we already know what we’re getting with him…ie someone who can handle NY.
Live from OmarCam:
Throwing back $100 chocolate vodka shooters at Red Square with K-Rod.
I think they got a heckuva bargain. Although if K-Rod shows up at the presser with a sling, I reserve the right to alter that opinion.
I like it. And I love that Minaya got it done so early (assuming it really is done). Sends a strong message to the fans that he’s not messing around this offseason.
Step 2 - Lowe, Sheets, or Wolf
Bananagrabber? That’s quite a mouthful.
/ pause
I would have rather rolled the dice on Kerry Wood- shorter deal for smaller money for the better stuff and keep the draft pick… that being said, 3 years at this price is not too bad.
After all our health problems in the past I wouldn’t be too confident hitching my wagon to Wood’s star. I’m sure Omar will be looking to add some depth for that same reason.
Loblaw:
I’m disappointed that with a name like yours, you don’t get mine.
I like. Now the Mets can at the very least least field a legitimate MLB team in 08.
Now the question is, will Omar rest on his laurels and fill in the rest of the pitching staff with sand…or will we get a real upgrade?
This is a good move by Omar, he got K-Rod for a good contract that will work for him and the club. Angels fans have to be a little ticked that he signed for an option year more than what he was offered by the Angels.
Still need a couple more arms, but this is a good move that will help set the tone for the team.
PS. I also think this is another example of one of the reasons why Omar is a good GM for the Mets. He has shown a great ability to make a deal like this happen and spends the right amount of money on the right player more often then not. (I still think Steve Philips drugged him into signing Castillo for that absurd contract, not surprised Omar signed him, just not for that contract.)
Always money in the banana stand. Glad to see Omar saved us some cabbage with this three-year deal.
I love the signing but lets not stop here. Omar needs to get a nice set up man, perhaps Street and I keep hearing all this Michael Young talk thats making me just drool. I dunno if it came down to FMart for Young thats a toughie. Anyway, havent been on for awhile Happy Holidays to all and to all a Great Closer!!!
heyyyyy, a metswin sighting! cool! :)
This is essentially irrelevant, but just for fun, on this happy day.
K-Rod career vs. NL: 45 G, 50.1 IP, 23 H, 20 BB, 6 ER, 67 K, 1.07 ERA
Very very happy with this!!
I wonder what number he’ll be…I mean this isn’t college football, you can’t have the same number for multiple players!
What makes you think I don’t know who you are, bananagrabber? Just because I didn’t offer you free bananas?
I mean, it was ridiculous… completely farcical… to stick themselves with Delgado without making an extended run at Texritter.
I mean, no other team in the league was going to look at him as anything but one half of a DH platoon and… the Mets just lock the creaky old geezer up.
But… this partially makes up for it, certainly.
He’s a heartattack on a plate, there are no clean innings with K-Rod… but most of the time, he gets the job done and that’s what matters.
I utterly hate this deal. This crushed my dreams of a Dennys/Danys platoon Closer situation.
I understand totally Chris. My dreams of having Ayala closing out next year have been crushed as well. Damn that Omar and his deals ;-)
Good to see you as well 71 and Chris and everyone else for that matter. Our computer crashed and burned for awhile so I havent been on alot lately but we finally broke down and picked up a new one.
Thats just st8 up sick numbers nad just think a few of them were us against him. I think if we could sign Olllie/Lowe another setup guy via trade we will have a very nice season next year. This Michael Young talk is probably just that (talk) but if we could upgrade Castillo and or Schneider man that would make the holidays that much sweeter ;-)
I asked you to get my animation rights back to GOB.
This deal is still sweet in the morning.
Personally, I think K-Rod will spend a fair amount of time on the DL during the term of this contract. His declining velocity tells me all is not well with his shoulder and with his contract expiring last year, he’d be incentivized to push through the pain and keep pitching. Now he’s got his contract so look out.
I would have liked to have gotten into the Texiera sweepstakes as well, but Delgado earned another year with his second half and honestly I am not sure that Omar wants to lay out Santana money on Texiera. I would like to see him sign Dunn to play in LF this year and then switch to 1B after Delgado rides out of town next year, but that is a lower priority as well.
Upgrading 1B would have been a nice to have option this off season, but we need to spend our money on the pen and rotation, I don’t think we can do that if we throw 140 mil at Tex as well.
