We outbid them for Beltran and for Pedro.

    they never bid on Tron

Pedro is true, we did outbid the sox. good pt!

I really meant when both are in play, like they are for Lowe. sorry for being unclear.

Ah, I hear you. Well it’s hard for almost any team to outbid those two.

Didnt we outbid them on Johan? lol

    Very tru

they’re like Russia and the US mid cold-war lol. i’m not sure what country that makes us!

The Sox wouldn’t give Pedro the extra year. They knew he would break down. They knew what they were doing!

I guess so in terms of talent. i really meant cash outlays for FA

thats a fair point though cuz the FA contract was really why they both passed. i dont buy it was over talent for a second

    i’ll never get why

hahahaha, truuuuuuuuuuuu. and they won a bunch w/o him

  12. Comment posted by john on December 5, 2008 at 4:37 pm (#902936)

But generally I agree with you. If theres three teams wanting a particular player and those teams are the Mets, Red Sox and Yankees chances are they are not going to the mets.

  13. Comment posted by sheadenizen on December 5, 2008 at 4:38 pm (#902937)

Didnt we outbid them on Johan? lol

Another fallacy. We didn’t outbid them. The twinks made big demands on the yanks and Sox. neither would blink. Omar was patient….I’ll give him credit for that

If I recall, the Yanks and Sox pulled their offers after the winter meetings.

  16. Comment posted by john on December 5, 2008 at 4:43 pm (#902939)

The twins took what they felt to be the best offer. If we are going to bash, then we need to give credit where credit is due.

tru, but i was really talking cash.

now i think the argument can be made the cash is WHY they backed off but its still a bit different

the skanks have to still be kicking themselves over it.

they’re gonna pay more now for a guy that isnt as good

    congrats!

Hughes wont make up the difference

  23. Comment posted by john on December 5, 2008 at 4:49 pm (#902943)

Its difficult I think because ok the mets are a big market team and yes they have a ton of money and yes they are near the top in payroll. The problem it doesnt seem to matter since the sox and yankees have MORE cash so we lose out to them.

  24. Comment posted by john on December 5, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#902944)

Yeah I’m pretty sure the Yankees regretted what happened as soon as the season began.

yup john. they have a bit more and we also have pissed away a ton that could be considered sunk costs.

so when ppl say oh $140M payroll. yea, i mean that’s true, but some of that is already spent and we wont ever see any production from.

  27. Comment posted by sheadenizen on December 5, 2008 at 4:52 pm (#902946)

Correction…the Twins took the ONLY offer. Lunk is correct. The Yanks and sox had already pulled their offers. The Twins had little choice.

I refuse to believe they didnt want Johan cuz it cost them hughes. bullllshitttttttttt

    they didnt wanna pay him

same reason they lost out on Tron

Thank god. honestly. If the skanks wanted they could have Tron and johan right now if they did things differently.

our team would be quite different!

    Show
    + a few i am missing

That’s probably almost $12-15M right there. doesnt seem like much but that’s 10% of the payroll

so do i bet on the giants this week or not

    -7.5, its a tough call

they are 10-2 vs the spread this season. I’m 9-1!!!!

I think i owe it to them. 7.5 makes me a little nervous, stupid stuff can happen and keep the game within that

  84. Comment posted by john on December 5, 2008 at 5:20 pm (#902982)

Its significant. I mean we already lost another starting guard as well, not to mention Camarillo signs that contract and is now out for the year.

Bills have stunk lately tho. I can see us winning. That would be absolutely huge. The next two are san fran and kc before the jet game.

Overrated??? C’mon, Maddux has like what, 12 Cy Youngs? Hardly overrated!

Maddux is easily among the top 5 pitchers of his generation and he definitely had the Mets number in the late 90s.
1st ballot HOF, maybe even unanimously.

His strike zone as Tim mentioned, was about 1.5 times the size width-wise as any other pitcher not named Tom Glavine.

Sorry, that will always be a mark against him in my book. Pitching 6-8 inches off the corner and getting those calls makes you over-rated.

Smoltz to me was the best of the three.
