Sigh.

Mets Miss Out on Vazquez; Now What?
By BEN SHPIGEL
Over the years, Omar Minaya and White Sox general manager, Ken Williams, have had their share of discussions about Chicago’s starting pitchers. In 2006, Minaya asked about Freddy Garcia before Williams traded him to Philadelphia but the Mets’ GM was not interested in parting with prospects. In 2007, Minaya inquired about Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras, but those talks did not progress. Javier Vazquez came up occasionally, but Williams held onto him every time.
But with no chance that Vazquez would return to the White Sox next season, Williams fielded all sorts of trade proposals before finally accepting one from a different National League East team – the Braves. The Mets, again, are shut out, and it leaves them in an interesting position as they mold their 2009 rotation.
On the surface, Vazquez appeared to be exactly the type of starter the Mets needed: dependable and durable. In each of the past nine seasons, he has pitched at least 198 innings, recorded at least 150 strikeouts and won at least 10 games. How many Mets starters can be expected to do that next year?
Johan Santana is one. John Maine is coming off bone spur surgery and is hardly a sure thing. Mike Pelfrey took a huge leap forward in 2008 but, having thrown 200 and 2/3 innings (48 more than he had in any other season in his career), he could be in for a slight drop-off next year. Both could excel in 2009, too, but the Mets can’t bank on it.
Judging by the White Sox’ haul for Vazquez and Boone Logan, the Mets certainly had the prospects to get the two players. But Minaya may be saving up for a run at a closer (if his winter meetings pursuit of Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes goes awry), relief help or a to-be-determined starter.
The trade route may wind up being the Mets’ best bet for starting pitching help now that Derek Lowe and old friend Oliver Perez, both Scott Boras clients, seem headed for multi-year deals at lengths and costs that would exceed the Mets’ range. They may be less inclined to make a run at another steady right-hander, Jon Garland, now that he’s been offered arbitration and, as a Type A free agent, would cost them two draft picks. If they sign either K-Rod or Fuentes, who are both Type A’s, as well, it’ll cost the Mets those picks. But if the Mets, as expected, cannot sign Perez, they would receive two picks in return.
So far, the Mets’ focus on overhauling their bullpen has overshadowed the void in their rotation. Minaya is certain to inquire about starting pitchers who haven’t been churned through the rumor mill. He may even go back to Williams and the White Sox, though there doesn’t seem to be much of a fit, not anymore.

Hey, more awards-show-type things with people singing is always a good thing in my book. Except when it involves Celine Dion singing a song that’s like 7 minutes long.
This team is so fortunate to be getting a point tonight. Well let’s try and steal the second one in OT. Or maybe the SO. Better the SO since Hank seems to be a god in the SO.

Braves not interested in Adam Dunn
Wed Dec 03, 2008 8:00 pm EST
Contrary to a FOXSports.com report, the Atlanta Braves aren’t among the teams interested in Adam Dunn. The Web site reported Wednesday that the Braves, Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals are among the teams showing interest in the free-agent outfielder, according to MLB.com.
The Braves are seeking a right-handed (Dunn bats from the left side) outfielder that they can place between Chipper Jones (a switch hitter) and Brian McCann (a left-handed hitter) in the middle of their lineup.
Braves general manager Frank Wren is still attempting to satisfy this need via the trade market. There is a chance he might once again talk to the St. Louis Cardinals about Ryan Ludwick. The Cardinals are interested in second baseman Kelly Johnson. But they aren’t interested enough to satisfy Atlanta’s request to package Ludwick with a mid-level Minor League prospect.
The trade route may wind up being the Mets’ best bet for starting pitching help now that Derek Lowe and old friend Oliver Perez, both Scott Boras clients, seem headed for multi-year deals at lengths and costs that would exceed the Mets’ range
Exceed the Mets range? What are they, the Royals? Isn’t Citi giving them millions upon millions to hoist their name up on that new castle they built? And what about SNY? That making them any money? How bout higher ticket prices? More luxury boxes/suites?
I don’t get it. Does Dunn have AIDS or somethin? Yeah the guy is a strike out machine, and I’m not the biggest fan. But he is a quality player who at this point will only cost a team money. No trades, no draft picks. Just a few bucks. And because the interest is nonexistent, it won’t be much money.

I’ve been always interested in Kelly Johnson. Other than killing the Mets (even when he is struggling *Jorge Sosa Grand Slam*), He is incredible disciplined within the strike zone yet has a horribly inconsistent swing. It is a ugly swing when it is going bad. When he struggles, his power becomes almost completely non-existent. He will rarely hit the ball hard when he is struggling.
Now, Kelly the good hitter is something to see. At the end of 08, he was having said streak. He hits lefties better than righties actually. When on, he will get you XBH, high OBPs and he looks like an all star.
He is shaky at second with the glove. He has a problem laying back on balls he should charge. His arm is suspect too after Tommy John. I haven’t looked at his range factors or zone ratings but watching him he can really only go to his left well. He was drafted as a short stop and was then converted to the corner outfield. The move to the infield was made due to his surgery. I always chuckled when people, when looking for comparisons of guys moving from the outfield to the infield *BTW, I supported the Daniel Murphy to second base campaign*, would use Kelly Johnson. To remain an NL player, Kelly needed to be a second baseman. His arm is that bad. He can not even zip the ball on double plays.
