They should have the right, just as you or I do, to make stand on an issue that they feel is something they support.
They have a right to make a stand. Don’t give the anti-Prop 8 guys money and see what becomes of it.
I agree it is a bullshit way of doing business, but it is 100% legal.
Besides, I can argue to you that these companies put themselves at risk of protest by giving their money in the first place — if they didn’t want the hassle, they shouldn’t have donated to the Yes on Prop 8 folks.

Really a well run corporation has no interests except the shareholders, employees and customers. They dabble enough to get what they need from the political system and leave it alone. They are nihilistic in nature. They don’t social issues with 25 foot pole.

Not for blackmail: the truth is not an affirmative defense for blackmail at all. As a lawyer you should not confuse slander/libel with blackmail. The two are different.
What they are doing is not blackmail.
Technically, blackmail would be demanding money to avoid turning someone in for illegal activities.
What they are doing is saying if you do not give an equal donation to us, we are going to tell everyone that you are pro gay marriage.
This is a 100% true statement. Moreover, under California law, donor records are public; so they are not threatening to divulge any secret information.
Is is a form of blackmail? Sure. Is there any criminal, civil, or common law violation? None whatsoever.
I hope Palin gets speared in the thorax tonight dropping the puck…

Corporate entities by nature don’t have privacy. They are owned by entities of the public and have to account for their spending to those entities so they have zero privacy.

athena, you got any fun plans this weekendy? Endy!
Yup! Big date to celebrate the birthday of one of my favorite young men.
He turned 9 last week. So there will be homemade chocolate cake, Wii and WiiFit and assorted activities.
And I think that I’m going to buy him a kit to build his own robot as one of his gifts. Which will mean that I am assembling a robot this weekend. Auntie Athena is in charge of all assembly and technology issues in the family! Auntie Artemis bakes the cakes. ;-)
You can’t complain about boycotts and then pull this shit Lew, that’s what really pisses me off.
And they have been lying left and right about what Prop 8 does. I think if you are running support for a Prop and arguing morality…lying isn’t the way to do it.
Last time I checked the Bible has something specifically about lying, but nothing about gay marriage.

Where does the right to privacy enter into this discussion?
Under California Laws, all donors to polictical campaigns and causes are a matter of public record.
Once you give a cause/person your money, you lose any right to privacy.
Believe it or not this law was passed to protect the electorate from huge contributions from corporations/PACs — it seems what it has done is leave people vunerable to these exact threats.

I agree, but hypocrispy is not illegal — if it was all 535 members of Congress, most of the executive branch and our two candidates for President would all be in jail!

Are you talking S-Corps or C-Corps? Or even LLCs? There is different levels of privacy related to each.
I would guess that the companies that own individual hotels are LLCs, which means they are totally privately owned and not subject to public scrutiny.

They are. I worked on a case suing a (stand-by now) Republican group in California that refused to provide a list of its out-of-state donors for public review.
They lost.
The whole purpose of the law is to put pressure on companies and individuals who support unpopular causes.
It was supported by the CA democratic party — it is now being used against a cause they support.

Laveranues Coles (head, thigh) is listed as probable for Week 8. Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder) is questionable.
Coles’ listing comes as a surprise after coach Eric Mangini revealed Thursday that Laveranues is coming off a concussion and he didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. Coles can be plugged into lineups against an inexperienced Chiefs secondary. He will likely square off against rookie RCB Brandon Flowers. Cotchery, as expected, will be a game-day decision. Lew even admits its blackmail, just not legal blackmail. It’s the tone of the article. Someone can commit blackmail and not realize the information is known to the public.
GIVE US WHAT WE WANT OR ELSE. Even if the else is something everyone knows. And I never said hypocrisy wasn’t legal, but it’s immoral behavior. I’m finding people running on moral values campaigns better be moral people themselves. I don’t find that to be an unfair request.
They’re lying and saying gay marriage will be taught in schools because it happens in Mass. Mass people are crazy, why lump us in with them?

What I funny funny is that it is totally legal, in part because of the actions of the party that is supporting Prop 8.
That is some delightful irony!
The CA dems pushed that through after Prop 209 passed — they were pissed that the Republicans were able to raise the money they needed to support that Prop.
They knew full well at the time that this law would be used to turn on folks who support certain political causes — they just didn’t care because they figured, it being California and all, that it would be used against conservative groups/individuals — so, with that backdrop, I find it fucking hilarious that a conservative group is using it to their advantage.
