Sigh. Even though he was funny in that movie Tropic Thunder and his upcoming eye-patch epic Valkyrie actually doesn’t look that bad, everyone still hates Tom Cruise. Always with the hating of Tom Cruise! Anti-Scientology protester group Anonymous is scheduled to once again picket at the Schoenfeld Theater, where his bewitched wife Katie Holmes is acting in a play. Last time they had signs that said things like “Free Katie, keep Tom,” which is just mean, y’all. And now New York actress grand dame Lauren Bacall hates Tom too:
“Tom Cruise is a maniac. I can’t understand the way he conducts his life,” the octogenarian told Elle magazine in a recent interview. She added that his “whole behavior is so shocking . . . inappropriate and vulgar.” She was reacting to his breakup with wife Nicole Kidman, which occurred when Kidman accidentally burned herself on the radiator at their London home, causing her to suddenly snap out of the foggy hypnotic state she’d been in, like when Short Round burns Indy in Temple of Doom so he’ll stop doing Mola Ram’s bidding.

Strong words from Ron Darling on the FAN regarding the Mets. He basically blamed Collapse Part Deux on the team’s “indifferent play” in the first half under Willie and when they “had all the weapons” (including Wagner, etc.). Fatcessa tried to get Ronnie to implicate Delgado, Beltran and Reyes in particular; Darling didn’t take the bait, but said “it was obvious some players played for him (Willie) and some didn’t.” Darling said he thought “something was missing” with this current makeup and that perhaps a Ray Knight or Keith Hernandez type personality needed to be added to the mix.
Personally, I wasn’t offended by anything Darling said: he was tough but respectful. What do y’all think?

THE STATE’S FISCAL CRISIS AND HOW IT AFFECTS PEF MEMBERS
From the desk of PEF President Kenneth Brynien
I would like to address the concerns of many members who have contacted my office for information regarding the state’s fiscal crisis, what this may mean for you as a public employee, and your union’s response.
As we are all aware, the financial, insurance and real estate sectors of New York’s economy are facing very difficult times. This has translated to a significant reduction in tax revenue for the state and growing projected deficits for the remainder of this fiscal year and into the next.
Many have heard rumors of impending lay-offs, re-opening contracts, creation of a new retirement tier, merging of state agencies, etc. At this point in time these are just that, rumors. I want to emphatically state to all PEF members, the employment security of our members is our highest priority, we will not re-open our contract, or agree to any reduction in non-contractual benefits.
The governor has already acknowledged that the state workforce has so far borne the brunt of the cuts that have already been imposed, including a 10% across the board cut in spending for state operations (executive branch spending) as well as a no growth budget for state agencies for the next fiscal year starting April 2009.
However, even with the 10% cut in spending the continued loss in tax revenue has resulted in a total shortfall of nearly $1.2 billion this year and a projected shortfall of $8 billion for next year.
To address these shortfalls the governor has called for a legislative session on November 18th and will deliver the Executive budget to the legislature on December 16th, a full month earlier than required by the state’s constitution. In two weeks the governor will be meeting with leaders of the unions representing the state workforce, presumably to inform us of his plans for addressing the shortfalls and to ask for additional input on potential solutions to the state’s fiscal crisis. At this point in time the governor has not called for additional cuts to the workforce other than through attrition and a hard hiring freeze.
PEF, along with other unions, and community-based organizations are advocating an increase in the income tax for the wealthiest New Yorkers, closure of tax loopholes, improved tax collection procedures, reductions in State spending for consultants, implementation of the bigger better bottle bill, and increased federal assistance to the states particularly for Medicaid costs as alternatives to greater spending reductions.
These are some of the many options available to the governor that the state can pursue before resorting to layoffs or damaging cuts to public services, and I will be insisting that the governor explore these options before there are any more cuts to the state workforce.
There is no doubt that there will be many ill-conceived proposals that could negatively affect our members and the services we provide. We will fight to ensure that the fiscal crisis does not fall disproportionately on the state’s workforce.
In addition to our direct advocacy to the governor on these issues we are working coalition with NYSUT, CSEA, AFSCME, SEIU, the state AFL-CIO and other unions to advocate for ways to reduce the deficit that are sensible, less damaging to the state’s economy, and preserve the public services our members provide.
I will continue to keep you informed regarding the state’s proposals to address the fiscal crisis and on our response.

Whatever fate awaits New Yorkers, many say they are bracing for a crime increase, particularly in petty crimes, if the economy gets worse. But opinions are mixed about whether any signs of disorder have already begun.
Mya Bee, 34, a filmmaker from a Brooklyn neighborhood once ravaged by crime, said that while it was still too early to gauge the full impact of the economic downturn, she had begun to notice some troubling trends. People seem less confident, she said. Some were selling personal belongings. One friend told her he had pulled his money out of the bank.
“When you can’t use your credit cards, it will get worse,” said Ms. Bee, a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant. “I know when people are really, really feeling it, it’s going to get bad. When that happens, all hell will break loose. People will resort to their old methods of making money, whether it’s robbing or stealing or hustling.”

Phillies’ manager Manuel’s mother, June, dies
ESPN.com news services
June Manuel, the mother of Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, died Friday morning, the Phillies announced.
Manuel, who watched batting practice from his usual spot behind the cage on Friday afternoon, will manage Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Manuel’s pregame news conference Friday was canceled. He did not speak to the media on the field.
Manuel said of his mother in a 2005 Mother’s Day postcard for MLB.com: “I can’t imagine a better person in the world than my mother. I hope everybody’s mom is like mine. She’s been very special to me, and I’ve been very lucky to have a mother like her.”
The Phillies hold a 1-0 lead over the Dodgers heading into the second game of the NLCS, thanks to a 3-2 win on Thursday night.

MINNEAPOLIS - A Minneapolis radio station says it will air public service announcements on HIV/AIDS after a pair of talk hosts accused Magic Johnson of faking AIDS.
KTLK’s Chris Baker and Langdon Perry made the remarks during Baker’s conservative talk show on Wednesday. After Johnson condemned the statements, the station said Friday it regretted “some off-hand remarks” by the pair.
The exchange came up after a caller complained about demands on workers.
Perry responded by asking about treatable diseases that a person can live with for a long time “if you just get some basic drugs.”
Baker responded, “Like Magic Johnson?”
Perry replied, “Like Magic with his faked AIDS. Magic faked AIDS.”

Scientists confirm shark’s ‘virgin birth’
Pup carried by Atlantic blacktip shark contained no male genetic material
By Steve Szkotak
The Associated Press
updated 1:49 a.m. ET, Fri., Oct. 10, 2008
RICHMOND, Va. - Scientists have confirmed the second case of a “virgin birth” in a shark.
In a study reported Friday in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center contained no genetic material from a male.
The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Neb., zoo.
“This first case was no fluke,” Demian Chapman, a shark scientist and lead author of the second study, said in a statement. “It is quite possible that this is something female sharks of many species can do on occasion.”
The aquarium sharks that reproduced without mates each carried only one pup, while some shark species can produce litters numbering in the dozen or more. The scientists cautioned that the rare asexual births should not be viewed as a possible solution to declining global shark populations.
“It is very unlikely that a small number of female survivors could build their numbers up very quickly by undergoing virgin birth,” Chapman said.
The medical mystery began 16 months ago after the death of the Atlantic blacktip shark named Tidbit at the Virginia Beach aquarium. No male blacktip sharks were present during her eight years at the aquarium.
In May 2007, the 5-foot, 94-pound shark died of stress-related complications related to her unknown pregnancy after undergoing a yearly checkup. The 10-inch shark pup was found during a necropsy of Tidbit, surprising aquarium officials. They initially thought the embryonic pup was either a product of a virgin birth or a cross between the blacktip and a male of another shark species — which has never been documented, Chapman said.
Tidbit’s pup was nearly full term, and likely would have been quickly eaten by “really big sand tiger sharks” that were in the tank, Chapman said in a telephone interview from Florida.
That is what happened to the tiny hammerhead pup in the Omaha case.
“By the time they could realize what they were looking at, something munched the baby,” he said of aquarium workers. The remains of the pup were used for the DNA testing.
Virgin birth has been proven in some bony fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, and has been suspected among sharks in the wild. The scientists who studied the Virginia and Nebraska sharks said the newly formed pups acquired one set of chromosomes when the mother’s chromosomes split during egg development, then united anew.
Absent the chromosomes present in the male sperm, the offspring of an asexual conception have reduced genetic diversity and, the scientists said, may be at a disadvantage for surviving in the wild. A pup, for instance, can be more susceptible to congenital disorders and diseases.
The scientists said their findings offer “intriguing questions” about how frequently automictic parthenogenesis occurs in the wild.
“It is possible that parthenogenesis could become more common in these sharks if population densities become so low that females have trouble finding mates,” said Mahmood Shivji, one of the scientists and director of the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
The DNA fingerprinting techniques used by the scientists are identical to those used in human paternity testing.
Chapman, who is with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook, was assisted in the study by Beth Firchau of the Virginia Aquarium.
Where is Custer? His Redwings have lost 1 in a row and are in danger of missing the playoffs….they suck.

hehe. Lennon nails it.
Why, why, why would the Mets think of trading Carlos Beltran for the Yankees’ Robinson Cano, as “internet rumors” have suggested?
Because they want to have a huge hole in centerfield rather than an easily filled one at second base? Because they’d rather have the Yankees’ overpaid, underachieving, head case in Cano than a four-time All-Star in Beltran who is going to win his third Glove Glove this year?
Oh, I forgot. The Yankees supposedly would throw in Ian Kennedy and Brian Bruney, too. No thanks. I’ll keep the switch-hitting centerfielder, who covered the equivalent of the Gobi desert this season between the likes of Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans and Fernando Tatis in the corner spots.
Just a reminder, this was Beltran’s contribution in 2008:
161 G ….284 BA … 376 OBP … .500 SLG … 116 R … 40 2B … 27 HR … 112 RBI
What else … Let’s see … Oh yeah, there’s nothing the Mets like more than watching one of their former players help the Yankees win a World Series and maybe the MVP in the process. Perhaps as Cano continues to be a bust without Larry Bowa around to kick him in the butt. Shall I continue? Or can we stop now?
Beltran does have a complete no-trade clause, but I’m sure he’d waive it to go to the Yankees, which is where he wanted to sign in the first place.

A political candidate picking the team in a swing state? FS
Jessica, you don’t think the Phillies selection is a huge blow to Obama carrying California?
car horn
based on that, i’d have to assume he’s rooting for the rays also, Jessica!
Go Rays!
McCain it is!
Are we selling votes? Mine’s for sale.
Darling also gave Johan major props for Game 161, and even Fatcessa agreed…so, y’know, there’s at one Met who he likes. :)
Besides, Obama rooting for the Phillies is purely political. He pretty much has California wrapped up. Pennsylvania is a swing state. Which one would you root for?
I’m sure he’ll root for the Rays as well.
of all the Mets announcers (including the radio guys) I respect and like Darling the most. IMO, he’s the most fair minded and honest.
Reyes? Oh right, he’s to blame for everything
well, would that that “personality” also came with keith’s or knight’s 86-level production
He’s also tres sexy. MEOW!
I could NOT care less who a candidate roots for.
Did anyone see the SNL special last night? Bill Murray asked “obama” and “mccain” what the would do to help the cubs win. Both said they will never win. It was great.
Reyes for Willie, 2008: 322 PA, .289/.353/.477/.830
Reyes for Jerry, 2008: 441 PA, .302/.361/.474/.835
hahah I saw that part, Ed. Only part that was really entertaining of the whole half hour.
DL, I think he meant someone with Keith 86’s baseball IQ, if anything.
I like when Darling talks about pitching a whole heck of a lot more than when he tries to play GM.
Speaking of political candidates and the cubs, I can only hope that a Mets fan running for office would have the balls to snark on the Yankees/their fans the way Obama (a ChiSox fan ) did with the cubbies.
i can’t get on ron at all. he was almost in tears after the last game.
(i also think if we got someone as good as keith that we would win)
Agreed on both counts, Zoddie!
Or we could just make sure the bullpen is not historically bad. Since fringe HOFs usually aren’t readily available on the cheap because they were druggies.
rawf
and tots
(I heard Pujols is on the coca. Get it done Omah.)
Palin is dropping the first puck at the Flyers home opener vs the Rangers tomorrow.
It is a celebration of “hockey moms” (they are awarding something to a local mom apparently), and Palin is the most famous hockey mom in America.
Snider btw is a republican. Suprise!
fuck all this naysaying bullshit
we’re def winning tonight
(obviously i mean the knicks preseason game)
*cries*
lol n tearz
2 of you here scoffed at me for predicting the end of Morgan Stanley and Goldman after Lehman went under. I know who you are….and I won’t forget.
whether right or wrong….Socialism…..here we come…..
Tis a scary time…
It hasn’t happened yet! But I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
GS won’t go on the same day as MS. If it happens Goldman will be given time to recover.
Shea, did you see this?
The seagulls were unsuccessful! He must have been picked up by a rogue deep sea fisherman and nursed back to life alongside a harbor porpoise.
Go Rangers! (The NY Hockey variant)
Hopefully they can find the net with some more shots tonight. 4 goals off of 80 shots is not good!
No, I didn’t Danny. I wasn’t on yesterday afternoon. Wow! Gus Gloom stopped by and I missed him. let’s hear it for rogue fisherman! Or he would have been DOOOOOOOMED!
The worst case is MS or GS will merge with someone else.
Odds are that they will come out of this, though they will struggle for a while.
I don’t think the Gov’t will allow the last two IB’s to fail like Lehman.
The fact that they changed their charters should allow them to muddle through.
Hendry works at Eclectica Asset management heading up their European and Agriculture mandates.
So how does he know about Goldman and MS?
bad stuff is happening
It seems as if MUFJ would prefer to take its 20% investment of MS to whole ownership. But behavior is so insane now, I’ve given up being surprised at any eventuality. I just wait for Sunday night and read the paper like everyone else.
bengals backup qb r. fitzpatrick will start against the jets in place of c. palmer.
Condolences to Charlie.
I still want the Dodgers to win.
that’s just gonna make the phillies’ success story even more heartwarming
wow.
now the jets will lose.
they are like the mets, they will lose to the unknown
pitcherQByep yep
they will kick up the grit to an even higher level now.
It will just be another reason for the Phils to show their grit. Soon enough we’ll be sending condolences to the Dodgers ;-(
the phils get all the breaks
Sharks are whores. I don’t believe that shit for a second.

kill em!
uber-yawn
fuck the dodgers
douchebags
Where is Custer? His Redwings have lost 1 in a row and are in danger of missing the playoffs….they suck.
It’s all the Cubs fault for folding like bitches.
In fact, this whole thing is the Cubs fault. A) they played like sissies against the Brewers to let the inferior team in to play against the Phillies and then B) they played like sissies in the playoffs so the mediocre Dodgers could play the Phillies.
I knew I hated the Cubs for a reason….
lemme know if you want more reasons…I got a ton.
MVP!!!1111one
mega-yawn
hehe. Lennon nails it.
rawfz
goddamnit
phillies get all the breaks
I’ve never seen a season so full of utter good luck as the Phillies have had.
now watch the dodgers get no runs this inning
I love Lennon (nh)
Okay, I’m gone. Have a good weekend, folks.
fucking bullshit
The Dodgers remind me a lot of the Mets….unfortunately. Thye put the guys on base and leave them there. They could have a 3/4/5 run inning, but manage to eke out 1.
It’s so similar it’s scary.
of course
of course their first runner scores
goddamn baseball to hell
fuck you dodgers you assholes
And just like the Mets, leaving all those guys on base comes back to haunt them.
philly fans don’t deserve this good fortune, they don’t
fuck them
oh stfu mccarver
rollins running hard my asshole
alright i’m turning this shit off
the trolley dodgers are painfully average…yeah loney.
I kinda like Cholly for getting in his grill like that…
How bout the unoriginal “I love L.A. ” playing out the commercial break…..
Do any of the geeks use Twitter or have a Skyp account?
fuck the baseball gods
I’m gonna whisper this, I don’t want to wake you all up….It’s obviously nappy time…
:: go blues:: shhhh there ya go…shhh
fuck the dodgers
fuck everything
die victorino die
man what a gutless performance by chad billingsley
I hate everything about baseball right now. The Sox are back and the Phillies look unbelievable. Baseball blows. I need to become a sumo wrestling fan or something. Go fat man. Kick his ass out of the line
Hola.
