Daily Mets Recap: September 18th, 2008
The Game
The Mets won a much needed game last night, a 9-7 victory over the Washington Nationals. The win came on the heels of a solid pitching performance from Brandon Knight, and two home runs off the bat of Carlos Beltran.
The former Yankee Brandon Knight took the hill for the Mets last night, and put in a performance worthy of his first career victory. He’d give the Mets five innings, allowing six hits, four walks and two earned runs. You’d like to see the walks total decrease, but otherwise Brandon Knight gave the Mets stability last night. He avoided the big inning in the 4th, when he walked three Nationals. He’d give up just two runs on a Kory Casto double and an Emilio Bonifacio single. The Mets probably won’t have a choice but to keep him in the rotation for the remainder of the season, so his start last night was encouraging.
The Mets offense, on the other hand, surprisingly scored runs last night. Washington sent out young Shairon Martis to face the Mets, and he didn’t fare too well in his three innings of work. He gave up five hits and six earned runs, inflating his season ERA to 6.23. After Martis, Jason Bergmann came on for an inning and gave up another run on a Jose Reyes single. Following Bergmann would be Charlie, “Don’t call me Peyton! LOL” Manning to allow a run in his two innings of relief. After Bergmann, Levale Speigner gave up a run in two innings of work. Including four home runs (From Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Delgado), the Mets managed ten hits last night. Very good sign to see this team take advantage of poor pitching.
The Mets bullpen last night, on the other hand, was once again awful. Ricardo Rincon gave up an RBI single in his inning of work. Brian Stokes allowed a two run home run to overall good guy Elijah Dukes. Stunningly enough, Mets manager called up Aaron Heilman to protect a four run lead. Aaron Heilman should be used in two situations; if the Mets are winning or losing by over 20 runs, or if the Mets need someone to run into a fiery building to rescue a small child. That’s it. Braden Looper 2.0 allowed a double and a single before being yanked. Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Smith would clean up the frame to get the Mets out of the inning. I won’t again ask God to kill a member of the bullpen, but perhaps just do something to get their attention. Like while Aaron Heilman walks home, have him fall into a pothole and spend the night in the sewer. Something like that.
Things got interesting in the ninth. After two runs scored in the ninth inning on a Wil Nieves single (Making the game 9-7 at the time), Luis Ayala came on to strike out Roger Bernadina to earn the save, and notch the victory for the Mets. Phew!
This was about as uncomfortable as a win gets, but I’m sure every Mets fan will take it. And if they don’t, they’re stupid.
The Mets will play the series finale tonight when Johan Santana takes on Tim Redding.
