Daily Mets Recap: September 14th, 2008, Game 2

The Game

What?!?!?! There was a second game today?!?!?! Well, I’ll be damned! Let’s quit wasting time and get to recappin’!

Going for the Atlanta Braves was 23 year old lefty Jo-Jo Reyes. Reyes has had an absolutely awful season, sporting a 3-10 record prior to yesterday’s game. In continuation of his terrible season, Reyes was only able to go two innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs. In the first inning, David Wright hit a two run home run to put the Mets up 2-0. Later on in that frame, Fernando Tatis hit an RBI single to increase the Mets lead to three. In the second, Jose Reyes lifted a home run to deep left field (Reyes’ first home run since August 16th) to put the Mets up 4-0. Jo-Jo Reyes exited after the second, and Buddy Carlyle entered to begin a long relief effort from the Atlanta bullpen.

Though the Braves received terrible pitching early on in the game, the Atlanta ‘pen was able to settle down the Mets offense for the rest of the evening. Four Braves relievers threw a combined six innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven. The only other run allowed came from Jeff Ridgway, who gave up a solo home run to Carlos Beltran.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Niese gave a remarkable performance to Mets fans. Making just his second big league start, Niese went eight innings, allowing just six hits and striking out seven. Jonathan never put himself in position to give up many runs, and limited his pitch count very well in his outing (he threw 116 pitches through eight innings). Niese received a well deserved standing ovation after his 8th inning, and notched his first career victory. After a scoreless Luis Ayala ninth, the Mets were able to put this one away.

This was a feel good win for the Mets. One thing New York’s done very well this season is rebound successfully from losses. Niese gave this team a lift last night, and propelled them to a split on yesterday’s doubleheader. Following the victory, the Mets are 2.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East division.

Today the Mets will play the rubber game of this three game series, as Oliver Perez will take the mound against Jorge Campillo.
