I don’t believe its tricky at all.

Hell, we all buy millions of Japanese products every year; we are allied with Germany; we are opening trade relations with Vietnam.

Countries and business are run by PEOPLE; when those people are no longer running things; the country/business should not be punished for the sins of its predecessors.

And, Bin Laden’s families’ construction business does a lot of work in the US and with US companies.

    Schneider scratched with knee infection
    September 12, 2008

Brian Schneider has been scratched with what Jerry Manuel called a knee infection. We’re still waiting on a briefing from Schneider. Robinson Cancel will start instead.

    ***

The Mets lost a coin flip, meaning they’d play a one-game playoff in Philadelphia if they tied for the division lead.

Wagner told his option won’t be picked up
    September 12, 2008

Scott Schoeneweis, who visited Billy Wagner on Thursday, said the closer already has been told by the team that his 2010 option won’t be picked up. Wagner is only interested in closing when he returns, so he presumes the team will have moved on by the time he’s ready to pitch again and that he’ll need to go elsewhere.

    ***

Brian Schneider said he has no infection. He said he has swelling atop his left knee and hopes to be back in the lineup Saturday. Ramon Castro may be active today, but Jerry Manuel preferred Robinson Cancel.

    ***

Chipper Jones has been scratched from Atlanta’s lineup.

    ***

Jerry Manuel intimated that Luis Castillo would finally start Sunday, when the Mets end a string of facing six straight lefthanders. However, that seems mostly because Damion Easley’s body won’t allow playing that Sunday day game after Saturday’s evening action. Asked if it was a platoon based on lefty or righty pitching, Manuel said: “It’s a winning thing.”

Nothing like punishing a company for the acts of its officers 60+ years ago.

Yes, Allianz did bad things - but it attoned, paid a lot of retribution and has done all the right things in the last 20 years.

Punishing them today makes no sense, none.

The list of companies that were involved with the Nazi’s is long. I found some of the reporting about this to be a bit much.
I do understand the outrage, but, like I said, there are a lot of companies from Benz, to Bayer and so on, that had links. Most US banks had predecessors that had some sort of link.

At the end of the day, this was a bad move by the Jets/Giants to even think about though. They had to know there would be backlash.

BA’s Ben Badler did the honors for Baseball America in their weekly ESPN chat this week.

Brian (Brooklyn): Was Wilmer Flores the number 1 international prospect signing last year? Also has he been the most productive from last year’s class?

SportsNation Ben Badler: (2:20 PM ET ) Nope, there were eight others who got more than Flores during last year’s international signing period. If all those guys suddenly because free agents again though, he would almost certainly get the most money. There’s a tremendous amount of uncertainty involved in international scouting, mostly because the kids you’re dealing with are so young that so much can change between ages 16 and 17. Huge ceiling there with Flores, great bat speed, tough to strike out and a frame that projects for power.

Flores dominated the Appy League, but the other guy we need to be talking about here is Jefry Marte, who also signed last year, has good tools and just led the GCL in OPS as a 17-year-old.

Yes, Ben, I’ve been writing about him all season.

jon (nyc): Most scouts seem to question Dan Murphy, but every time I see him I see a professional hitter with extra base power. what am i missing?

SportsNation Ben Badler: (3:08 PM ET ) The scouts we’ve talked to do like Murphy and say he’s going to be a good hitter in the big leagues. I think a lot of times if a guy posts good numbers in the minor leagues but doesn’t get written about as much as the premium, elite-level prospects, it gets assumed that scouts don’t like him, but that’s not always the case.

Implicit in this answer is the notion that scouts like guys who won’t necessarily be all-stars, but rather MLBers, while fans focus on finding and hoping every minor leaguer will be an all-star.

Brad (Georgia): Tommy Hanson and Charlie Morton or Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell?

SportsNation Ben Badler: (3:08 PM ET ) Hanson/Morton, but mostly just because of Hanson.

This is more than fair. Tommy Hanson had a dynamite year in AA with the Mississippi Braves going 8-4 with a 3.03 ERA and 114 K, 41 walked and just 70 hits allowed in 98 innings.

    Matchup: Brewers (83-64) at Phillies (80-67), 7:05 p.m. ET
    Probable Starters: Manny Parra (158 2/3 IP, 4.59 RA, 1.50 WHIP, 138 K) vs. Cole Hamels (208, 3.55, 1.06, 180)
    Pythagorean Record: Milwaukee, 80-67 (687 RS, 622 RA); Philadelphia, 83-64 (713 RS, 619 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Milwaukee, #4; Philadelphia, #10
Prospectus: As pointed out in the Baseball-Reference Stat of the Day blog two months ago, Phillies’ reliever J.C. Romero has constructed nearly an exact replica of his 2007 season this year, as he has again been extremely stingy giving up hits and extremely liberal handing out free passes. Last season Romero gave up 39 hits in 56 2/3 innings, or 6.2 H/9, while this year he has allowed 38 in 54 2/3, 6.3 H/9. Romero’s walk rate has lowered a bit, down from 5.6 UBB/9 last year to 4.8 in 2008. There are very few pitchers in history who have combined that low a hit rate with that high a walk rate: last year Romero put up the 24th campaign ever with at least 50 innings, a H/9 less than or equal to 6.5, and a BB/9 greater than or equal to 6.0. This year, he is in line to become the fifth pitcher to have back-to-back seasons of under 6.5 H/9 and over 5.5 BB/9. The others to do so are Tommy Byrne in 1948-49, Nolan Ryan in 1976-77, and Jeff Nelson in 2000-01, while “Bullet” Bob Turley (1953-55) and Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams (1986-88) had three consecutive such seasons. Romero has been able to revitalize his career in Philadelphia; after giving up 40 runs in 48 1/3 innings for the Angels in 2006, he has now put up a 2.18 RA in 91 innings since being traded to Philadelphia from Boston in June of last year.

Romero will likely be called upon in the next three games to get out the Brewers’ only real threat from the left side of the plate, Prince Fielder, who is hitting just .228 against lefties with a 729 OPS this season, down from 834 last year. Fielder hasn’t only been struggling against lefties, however—since the All-Star break he has just 16 extra-base hits in 227 plate appearances, good for a .454 slugging percentage. He did homer against a lefty (Jamie Moyer) in last night’s 6-3 loss that opened this critical four-game series, ending a stretch of 24 straight games in which the big lefty did not go deep, the longest of his young career. After putting up the seventh-highest slugging percentage by a 23-year-old in history last season (.618), Fielder is now just sixth in slugging among the 10 Brewers with 200-plus at-bats so far in 2008.

    Matchup: Braves (65-82) at Mets (82-63), 7:10 p.m. ET
    Probable Starters: Mike Hampton (53 IP, 5.77 RA, 1.49 WHIP, 24 K) vs. Johan Santana (203 1/3, 3.05, 1.15, 175)
Pythagorean Record: Atlanta, 71-76 (685 RS, 707 RA); New York, 81-64 (724 RS, 636 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Atlanta, #20; New York, #5
Prospectus: Tonight opens the final series at Shea Stadium between the Braves and Mets. No opposing player will be sadder to see the old park torn down following this season than Chipper Jones. “I might be the only one that is sad to see the place go,” Jones told the New York Times last month. Despite—or perhaps partly because of—the Shea faithful’s chants of “Laaa-rry” (Chipper’s given first name), Jones has continually tormented the Mets in their home ballpark. He owns a career line of .308/.404/.553 at Shea, with 19 home runs and 54 RBI in 372 plate appearances. “I always thought it was a good hitter’s background there, a park that kind of plays to my strengths.” Mets fans will never forget how badly Jones torched their team at Shea during his MVP season in 1999, with three home runs and a 1357 OPS in six games. It was that season that really started the special relationship between Jones and Mets fans; after Atlanta took two of three in New York during a late September series that put the Mets two back of the wild card, Chipper said “Now all the Mets fans can go home and put their Yankees stuff on.” The Mets ended up making the playoffs and meeting Atlanta in the NLCS, and the Shea partisans heckled Jones relentlessly during the three home games, but Jones further added injury to insult by helping the Braves knock the Mets out in six games.

Jones has acknowledged his mastery of the Mets in Flushing. In fact, he’s done more than acknowledge it—he named his third son Shea. After the birth of Shea, in late August of 2004, Jones told reporters “I hit my first homer [at Shea Stadium]. I love that place. Check the numbers.” In a June Sports Illustrated article, Jones said that his now four-year-old son is already “a stud” at hitting, so perhaps one day Shea Jones will be raking at Citi Field just as his father did in the park that preceded it. Jones recently stated that he will attempt to take a picture together with his son at Shea this month, and wants to take home a souvenir from the park before its demolition: “I would love for something that says Shea Stadium, New York Mets, and have him know the old field behind the new field is where his dad played.” New York fans will surely be booing louder than ever in these last three games to provide a lasting Shea farewell to their favorite villain and one of the greatest hitters of this generation.

gotta say, i hate chipper and all, but i have a great deal of respect for the dude.

yes his personal life has been less than morally perfect, but man, he plays the perfect villian for us, and he seems to get “it”.

As Carlos Delgado elevates his MVP profile, he might also be elevating his 2009 paycheck.

Buried in the fine print of the four-year contract Delgado signed with Florida before the 2005 season is an escalator clause that could turn his $12-million option for next year into a $16-million option.

The escalator isn’t based on plate appearances or games played, or any of the vehicles usually used in these situations, however. It’s based on awards and award voting. And that’s where this could get interesting, for Delgado and the Mets.

Delgado needed to accumulate 30 awards “points” over the life of his contract to trigger that $4-million escalator. He already has five of those points, thanks to a sixth-place finish in the 2005 NL MVP voting.

Points are tallied based on his finish in MVP balloting over the life of the contract — 10 for finishing first, nine for second, eight for third, etc.

So how could he rack up the 25 more points he needs? It’s unlikely, but here’s how:

If he finishes sixth or higher in this year’s MVP election, which seems more probable all the time, that will get him at least five more points and push his total into double figures.

That would still leave him anywhere from 15-20 points short. But the escalator clause also includes postseason MVP points — 20 for World Series MVP, 10 for NLCS MVP.

In other words, if Delgado wins the World Series MVP award and finishes in the top six in the regular-season MVP voting, he would reach 30 award points — and pump up his option an extra $4 million.

Think that’s still practically impossible? Think again. Two of the last four World Series MVPs — Mike Lowell (2007) and Manny Ramirez (2004) — also finished in the top six in MVP voting that season.

So Delgado’s big season could pay off in more ways than one.

Reds acquired RHP Micah Owings from the Diamondbacks to complete the Adam Dunn deal.
The Reds received Owings, Dallas Buck and Wilkin Castillo from Arizona for a couple of months of Dunn and, more importantly, two draft picks. How Owings bounces back next year will determine whether or not it was worth it. He’s been shut down for a month now with shoulder woes. Sep. 12 - 5:02 pm et

Good for Francesa and he’s mostly right, I might place Sizemore a little a head of Beltran, but that’s 1A and 1B basically in that horse race.

he talked about Sizemore Doc and still rated Beltran higher. He checked their numbers head to head and declared beltran the winner. Go figure….lol!
