Daily Mets Recap: September 8th, 2008, Game 2
The Game
Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado, and the New York Mets took the crucial second game of Sunday’s day night doubleheader at Shea Stadium against the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 6-3. The victory kept New York from slipping into a first place tie with the Phils.
After the collapse of ‘07, New York’s lack of an ace was viewed as the primary reason for the Mets’ being an unable to stop the bleeding during their September swoon. So, Omar and company added Johan Santana and his impressive resume to a staff that sorely needed him. After losing the first two games of their series with the Phillies and seeing their three game lead shrink to just one, Santana took the hill for his biggest start as a member of the Mets. This is why they got him. And Johan did not disappoint. After running into some first inning trouble (which included a Ryan Howard RBI single), Santana settled down. Johan would pitch into the eighth inning while allowing just two runs on five hits (the second run coming on a Ryan Howard opposite field homer) to go with three walks and six strikeouts in picking up his 13th victory of the season).
While Santana was doing his thing, the dormant Met offense woke up against Phillie ace Cole Hamels. Carlos Beltran tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Later in the frame, Carlos Delgado came up with runners on second and third and two out. Carlos deli vered a two run single up the middle to put New York up 3-1, but he was far from finished. In his next two at bats, Delgado crushed (and I mean crushed) two solo homers off Hamels in the third and fifth innings to give New York a 5-2 lead. At the risk of sounding redundant, I will ask the same questions that Met fans have been asking for the better part of two months. Where did this Carlos Delgado come from? And where would this team be without him? Delgado now has 33 home runs and an even 100 RBI on the season.
Brian Schneider extended New York’s lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth with a sac fly. The Phils added a run in the top of the ninth against Luis Ayala, but the Mets came away with an extremely important victory. As they have for the better part of the summer, the Mets came out with a win when their backs were against the wall. Monday brings an off day before the Amazins open up a two game series against the Washington Nationals at Shea on Tuesday.
