Daily Mets Recap: September 8th, 2008, Game 1

The Game

The New York Mets dropped the opener of a day night doubleheader to the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The loss cut the Mets’ lead over the Phils to just one game with Sunday night’s season finale between the two teams looming as a must win game.

Sunday afternoon’s game with the Phillies was originally supposed to be played on Saturday. I’m not sure the Mets ever got the memo that the game was being played on Sunday afternoon as they slept through a listless performance. The Phils got on the board in the second against Pedro Martinez and his 85 mph fastball. Matt Stairs’ sac fly and Carlos Ruiz’s RBI single made it 2-0 in the second. In the fourth inning, the best third baseman in the series (Gregg Dobbs) connected for a three run homer off Martinez. Jimmy Rollins later added an RBI double and, after just three and a half frames, the Mets were down 6-0.

Meanwhile the New York offense was pathetic in facing Phils’ starter Jamie Moyer for the 35th time this season. Moyer would go seven innings while surrendering just two hits (both infield hits) and no runs. The Mets would score two meaningless runs in the eighth on RBI doubles by David Wright and Carlos Beltran off Lou Pinella favorite Scott Eyre. There was an eerie sense of “here we go again” in the crowd as they filed out of big Shea. The big difference between the ‘08 Mets and the ‘07 Mets is the fact that New York added an ace to stop the bleeding in these situations. Johan Santana will be expected to do just that as he takes on Phils’ ace Cole Hamels in the nightcap of Sunday’s double dip.

The haiku is fine if you say the second to last word of the second line “age-ed.” At first glance it’s wrong.
