Daily Mets Recap: July 29th, 2008
by: Milo Taibi, Howard Megdal and Eric Simon on Jul 29, 2008 9:26 AM | Filed under: Game Recaps

The Game

In what can only be described as a brutal evening, the Mets lost a game 7-3 to the Florida Marlins, and possibly one of their top starters.

The Mets took on Ricky Nolasco last night, and didn’t have much success. They would knock in two men in the second inning, on a Fernando Tatis triple (Which should have been ruled a double and an error on Dan Uggla), and a Damion Easley single. After that, the Mets would score just one more run, on a fielder’s choice. I hate to be critical of Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez, but for all the bashing of the Marlins offensive approach they did last night, they failed to mention that the Marlins struck out only one more time than the Mets did in the game (The Mets K’d 9 times), as well as getting six more hits and drawing the same amount of walks.

The Marlins played a sloppy defensive game, but showed up when it mattered. After John Maine left the game in the 5th inning due to shoulder stiffness, the Fish flopped all over Carlos Muniz (I’m only guessing as to what a Marlin would do in this spot. Do they have teeth? Can they bite? Someone let me know) for three hits and an earned run. Then, in a disastrous 8th inning, five runs would cross the plate to give Florida the lead for good. Kevin Gregg would shut down the bewildered Mets in the 9th for Florida’s 56th win of the season.

Bleccch. What an awful game. John Maine’s status is hanging in the balance, and the bullpen proved unable to hold a lead. Am I the only one who doesn’t see why Carlos Muniz is in the big leagues? When Omar Minaya compared him to Chad Cordero, he must have meant that Muniz pitches as though he were in Cordero’s current state; with a torn right labrum. Whenever he pitches, the thought of Steve Register on the roster instead of Muniz doesn’t look so bad.

I could just sit here typing all of the awful things about this game…so I will.

Why is Nick Evans out of Double A? Who thought that his time would be better served riding the pine in the Major Leagues than playing everyday in Binghamton?

Hey Omar Minaya, that Marlon Anderson signing sure looks great right about now! Sure, his OPS is .531 but his inspirational note writing skills are second to none.

Joe Smith is entering the fatiguing Joe Smith stage of last year, which is a frightening thought considering the current state of the bullpen. Scott Schoeneweis has to be able to get Robert Andino out in that spot.

My God, that felt good. Tonight Oliver Perez will try to best Scott Olsen.

Wow! I thought this version of the Mets was long gone. The bullpen is flat out terrible…..every single one of them is scared to pitch to contact. They all pick at the corners and put themselves in poor pitchers counts. I would love to see 1st pitch strikes every now & then from these guys. Suck it up fellas this is the BIGS…..throw strikes.
