Lister, I believe OPS+ adjusts enough that

Dunn’s OPS+ of 138 isn’t “overwhelmingly” greater than Giambi’s 144 mark. BTW, that Great American Ballpark is pretty nice to lefties as well. I saw Fernando Tatis hit a homerun the opposite way that would have never cleared in 90% of ML ballparks.

So it basically imagines each stadium as having symmetrical playing parameters…

I guess in a way, yes. Because righthanded and lefthanded hitters are considered equally, it’s only the park and the players’ individual stats that affect the calculation.

IHMO, Giambi is a waaay more well-rounded hitter than Dunn is. I don’t see the overwhelming advantage Dunn has in this regard…

Park factors are screwy like that.

Imagine 9 Giambis in SkankeeVille and then imagine all the road parks that 9 Giambi team play in are not lefty friendly.

You may be right, Ramon. I made that brash comment before looking their current numbers up. Giambi is having a better year than what I keep imagining of him. Funny enough, I also figured Dunn would have had to face a higher percentage of LHP per PA but it’s about the same for the two. So, going forward, I’m much prefer Dunn and his 10 years younger-ness. But, as of now, they’re about equal. Neither overwhelmingly better.

Still, my point holds. If Giambi is an All Star SNUB, then why don’t these dickfaces understand Dunn would improve the Mets tremendously? They’re having the SAME season.

I will say this. Giambi’s road OPS is .826. Dunn’s is .952. This a very significant difference. Those numbers deserve to be looked at very closely.

BP rumor mill notes:

The rumor mill is decidedly quiet today. Some will call it the calm before the storm, but to me, it’s “committee day.” It happens every year, and is the time when everyone gets together (actually or virtually) and sorts out what they think they still need to do. The big, bold deals have for the most part been made, and now harsh reality sets in and the fine work of running a team comes into play. If you can’t get the one big piece, can you get the one useful piece? Was there really a Plan B, a Plan C, or a plan at all?

* The Rockies are on a roll and they’ve all but shut down the phones as far as taking calls on Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes. They were never that serious about dealing them, not in the sense that they were definitely going to be moved. Instead, they were just shopped, eBay-style, with a high reserve that everyone balked at. The team is very willing to move some lesser players, like Yorvit Torrealba, for pitching, but there’s not much market out there. Those looking for catching are waiting on the waiver wire to start when bigger names, such as Ivan Rodriguez, could be in play.
* Speaking of the waiver-trade possibilities, a lot of teams expect someone to get Randy Myers. Not the real Randy Myers—and where is he now?—but the same kind of “oh crap” move that happened to the Padres back in the day. There’s going to be some big names and big contracts out there, and given the reluctance of teams to block those big names and take the risk, it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
* Although Manny Ramirez is in play, he won’t give up his 10-and-5 rights to block a deal without assurances that the team won’t exercise his options. The Red Sox won’t give him that guarantee. The Phillies certainly discussed Ramirez, as did the Angels, but neither seems to have made an offer. The Red Sox would love to find the right deal and get rid of a headache, but they won’t do it unless the team gets better. Remember that some salary flexibility should be included in that value equation, especially considering that the trade market is going to be much stronger than the free-agent market when we get to Las Vegas and the Winter Meetings in December.
* Rumors on Mark Teixeira and a few other Braves keep bubbling up. Rumors of their buying on big names (including a Mark Bowman report on a nixed deal for Jason Bay) are as notable as the discussion of their selling Teixeira, Mike Gonzalez, and Will Ohman. The Angels continue to be the strongest contender for Teixeira.
* Speaking of Plan B, with Brian Fuentes more or less off the market and Damaso Marte in pinstripes, teams are now looking deeper for relievers, and considering guys like Ohman, Arthur Rhodes, Jack Taschner, and Dan Wheeler. Plan B hitters seem to include Adrian Beltre, Marlon Byrd, Matt Murton (again), and Jeff Kent. Kent’s name began popping up in rumors over the weekend; no one, including the Dodgers, seem to have much idea where the Kent stuff came from, and no one I spoke with seemed interested or even knew what the price might be.
* The most aggressive team right now? The Chicago White Sox, who seem frustrated by the lack of movement and are focused on adding relief help right now. The least aggressive is the Twins, who drew this shocker from an AL exec: “They could blow up the market by tossing one of their good young starters on the market, but they lost their cojones when Delmon Young had a bad first half.”
* There is still not a single team that will admit to the slightest interest in Adam Dunn. Did Ricciardi’s discussion of his desire hurt Dunn, or was the decision already made that Dunn isn’t a difference-maker for any team? Even Jim Bowden hasn’t inquired. Actually the only Redleg getting real interest right now is David Weathers, though Bronson Arroyo could be moved if someone was desperate enough.

No doubt, if for no other reason than Dunn can play a position…Giambi…well…no so much.

I just think that a team could get a Brian Giles for less than what you’d have to give up to get him. Or a Jason Bay for similar worth.

I would love to resign for another year at the rate he is raking. If he continues to do the job then I am all for another year until better longerterm options are available.

ok no cheating….how many guys can you name. I dont know if i have a full list or even a fully correct one, but i got a bunch of names. 10 to be exact.

100 3B, 100 HR, 400 SB, .280 BA

Twelve guys have done that in mlb history. Jose has a pretty good chance of being the next.

Of the 12, 8 are in the HOF.

Hell, if Delgado keeps doing what he’s doing for hte rest of the season with, let’s say, a slump of seven games or so mixed in, he’ll be one of the biggest fucking producers on this club. I don’t know if you can say no to that unless you’re willing to drop huge money on Teixeira or slightly less to Dunn.

Plus Lister, the option is for $16 million, but the buyout is $4 million, so the actual impact of keeping Delgado is really only $12 million, since $4 million of the is a sunk cost.

I think Tex will be asking for crazy money and years and I don’t want him.

I still want to pursue Dunn.

• Pedro Martinez has arrived in Florida and should rejoin the Mets on Tuesday. He’s officially listed for Friday’s start in Houston. Pedro will throw a bullpen session tomorrow, with batters standing in the box but not swinging at Dolphin Stadium. He’ll be capped at about 80 pitches against the Astros. Martinez returning after a team off-day is by design, since it ensures a rested bullpen as a hedge against a short outing.

• Ryan Church will begin taking batting practice Tuesday, and ideally play in minor-league games this weekend with St. Lucie and be activated next week against the Padres.

• Jerry Manuel has anointed Fernando Tatis as his left fielder barring a trade. Translation: When Church returns, Endy goes to fourth outfielder and defensive replacement.

Ramon, I’m not saying Manny makes all the sense in the world to the Yankees organizationally, but I am saying that I think Hank will covet him something fierce and that this is where Manny’s claims of having 100M offers are coming from. There are a lot of reasons why I can see them wanting Manny (logjam in left aside).

I asked Jerry Manuel about batting Carlos Beltran second and he said no for now for a couple of reasons:

-Moving Beltran up leaves the bottom half of the order weaker.

-They’ve been winning with the way things are now and he doesn’t want to disrupt things.

The guys from the 1800s are Hugh Duffy (HOF), Jimmy Ryan (I had never heard of him) and Mike Tiernan (him neither).

I find it exceedingly strange that nobody picked up Lofton this year. I know he’s 41, but he had a .367 OBP last year.

I wonder how outrageous his demands were.

If Reyes has a season at 27 the way Lofton did in 1994 he will win the MVP. That was a megasick year.

.349 BA, .412 OBP, .536 SLG, 144 OPS+ and 60 SB. Wow.

Jose is as tall has Lofton is at 6′0″. But he weighs around 20 more lbs. than Kenny did. Jose can be a real monster.

Mark Teixeira-1B-Braves Jul. 28 - 5:58 pm et

Yahoo! Sports’ Steve Henson reports that negotiations between the Diamondbacks and Braves are “pretty far along.”

Henson believes the Braves are asking for either Conor Jackson or Chad Tracy, plus a prospect. Jackson is likely off the table, but if the Braves are willing to accept Tracy as the centerpiece of a deal, then the Diamondbacks have to seriously consider making the trade. Still, it could come down to the prospect. The Diamondbacks don’t have much to offer besides Max Scherzer and Jarrod Parker after giving up a big portion of their system for Dan Haren, and it’s doubtful that they’d part with either right-hander.

His first full season was only at the age of 25.

If it was 22 or 23, he would be in the top 25 of all-time in runs scored. The top 10 of all-time in stolen bases. And close to 3,000 hits.
