The Mets are seeking a corner outfielder as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, and Mets GM Omar Minaya has long been an admirer of embattled Red Sox star Manny Ramirez. But even the Mets are saying “no” to Ramirez now. Ramirez’s latest antics, which included shoving Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick, 62, may discourage all potential suitors in this trade market if the Mets aren’t even interested. And Mets people suggest they will not be pursuing Ramirez.

Talking about a bat to slot between Utley and Howard. Their OF defense would be an embarrassment to mankind though with Pat and Manny out there.

What is he trying to say about the mets?! I mean, if anything, they go out of their way to avoid guys like that…

Manny to the Phils would tip things in their favor, i think ;) but you have to think they’d have to give up the hawaiian to get him, so that helps. maybe throw in taguchi?

i think Manny suffers from some disability I’m not joking either. I know people who have had business with him and they say Manny ain’t too smart of a guy.

i think he said that based on the mets potentially having the largest need for a corner OF of all the teams out there.

lawler is a tough dude chris, smith worked him hard in round 1 then cut his head in round 2 but then lawler just destroyed him with knees and finished him off.

smith said he was biding time waiting for the ref to stop the fight due to lawler’s cut.

    come on smith, that’s weak

Hawaiian and some prospects, plus the contract. My gut tells me the Phils are too frugal to spend the money. Personally although Manny is an idiot, he’s a harmless idiot and I would take him here from the right price.

probably dep, but even so, omar has never been one to make a move out of desperation (except arguably the nady trade b/c of duaner’s injury and even that turned out pretty nice).

We don’t need a corner OF - we got F-tat! and Church is resuming baseball activities tomorrow! (ok, maybe another bat would help…)

  18. Comment posted by Doc believes! on July 27, 2008 at 12:16 pm (#782539)

Manny is a guy who spent his life focusing on one thing, Hitting a baseball. He has expounded any energy to learn anything outside of that.

I remember reading years ago about him. He’s got someone to do everything for him. His only focus is baseball. So maybe he’s smart enough to realize he aint smart and he better get ppls to do things for him haha

Also Manny is a 10/5 guy so he has to approve any trade. So he can fuck the Sox here and go where he wants.

  25. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 27, 2008 at 12:18 pm (#782544)

i agree doc. If they could somehow swing a deal, i would do it - his defense is acceptable on the Mets if beltran and church are out there and endy can come in in late innings. But is he totally healthy? He’s a FA after this season right? last thing you want is to trade for him and have yet another OF play for Team DL.

  26. Comment posted by john on July 27, 2008 at 12:19 pm (#782545)

And knight was decent. Bad first inning but decent afterwards.

He has two options for $20 million mookie. That’s what he and the Sox are fighting about, he wants an extension now.

huge hit by F-tat and HUGE night from Delgado. And the fact that these never-say-die mets mounted 2 comebacks of 3+ runs. Hope carlos dos joins the party today

  31. Comment posted by Doc believes! on July 27, 2008 at 12:21 pm (#782550)

I don’t know if I want the Mets to extend him though. See Sheffield, Gary as to why. Same situation, the Yankees dealt him and the Tigers extended and he broke down.

Morning Geeks. Someone explain to me how the Pirates have allegedly been demanding the moon and the stars for Nady, Marte, and Bay and then only take a asteroid from the Yankees for Nady and Marte?

Would they take a package centered around Niese from the Mets for Jason Bay?

ah, thanks doc - haven’t been paying any attention to the bosox, i just keep hearing about him causing trouble over there.

Has there ever been a month where the Mets and Yanks were so super hot at the same time? There must be something in the water in NY right now. The yanks haven’t lost since the ASB, crazy.

You’re the first person I’ve heard say that Doc. Even the Fox sports announcers all day yesterday were commenting how the Pirates got raped. Stating they were sure the other 31 baseball GMs were wondering why the Pirates settled for just that package.

Tabata might still end up being good.
Kartens will eat some innings now and be a end of the rotation guy.
McCutcheon may end up being really Good.
Ross Ohlendorf may end up in the middle of their rotation.

That’s OK for a nice corner OF and reliever.

  44. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 27, 2008 at 12:31 pm (#782560)

super t - the same things were said about johan and the twins, but the reality is that they saw something in those guys that they wanted. I think it is impossible to judge whether the deal was a steal at this time just b/c the media perceives Nady as an all-star and Marte as a huge piece, and everyone is down on a 19-year-old “former stud” - you just don’t know. The pirates got what they are looking for, i’m guessing, or they wouldn’t have done the deal.

Meanwhile, nady and marte are going to be paid a lot of $ next year and the pirates weren’t going to be able to afford it. So they needed to find a team with a lot of prospects and enough $ to pay in addition. And a need for an OF and reliever. Only the yankees fit the bill there.

Nady and Marte’s 2008 numbers are among the best at their positions. Nady is also signed for next season.

Jul 26 On Saturday, during the broadcast of the Sox-Yankees game, Fox color man Tim McCarver reported that Sox GM Theo Epstein has said that if Ramirez would waive his no-trade clause, Boston would try to make a deal and move him.

Recommendation: Epstein apparently went out of his way to tell McCarver that it was OK to say this on TV, indicating management’s dissatisfaction with Ramirez’s recent behavior.

wow, after today 1/2 of our next 12 games are against the fish. This could be a big stretch for the Mets - they could somewhat bury the fish, somewhat bury themselves or the teams could split and pave the way for the phils to push through. this race is getting pretty exciting considering it is still so early…

This could be a career year for Nady. Marte is expensive.

I think it’s quite different from the Johan deal in that only 3 teams were going to cough up the cash that it would have taken to sign Johan (Mets, Red Sox, and Yankees). Kinda limiting who the Twins could deal him too. The Pirates could have dealt Nady and Marte to a plethora of teams. Didn’t even have to deal them together. And I kept reading how they said they wanted top prospects in return. Were the players they got back from the Yankees “top prospects”? Because, while I admit I’m not familiar with them….everywhere I have read has labeled them as “Grade B” or “C” type prospects.

  51. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 27, 2008 at 12:43 pm (#782567)

i don’t think it’s all that different from the johan deal, if only b/c both players will command a lot of $. sure they could’ve split the two up, but since both would cost $ PLUS prospects, i think that eliminates a lot of teams. And looking at need, i dont think 29 teams were looking for an OF, especially not one that is overrated, avg to poor defensively and about to cost a good deal of $.

I think the yankees gave up 1 A and a few B’s. But i’m not positive about that.
