No kids, Tim. Not married, not engaged, should be making much more effort to play the field (too much time working and talking to you guys!!), and . . . no comment. ;-)

    LOL @ at the Boston-speak.

It’s funny - looking back at old pictures of myself from that age on, there are always shots of me looking up from whatever book I was reading at the time, clearly annoyed that I was being interrupted. My mother still likes to tell the story of how she would take me to McDonalds when she was pregnant with my brother and if the Happy Meal came with a book (as they often did back then), I would just sit there and read the book and completely ignore her. Somehow, that behavior upset her a lot less once lil’ bro was born and she could just hand me something to read when he demanded all of her attention ;-P

I was reading the New York Times in kindergarten. I didn’t understand all the concepts, of course, but I knew most of the words.

They say that trying to wrap my head around those kinds of ideas at that age, and mostly failing, rendered me somewhat… cynical.

I have no idea what they’re talking about, of course.

Tim: The rules are great, but the scorekeepers follow their own code.

If a ground ball goes through a fielder’s legs or a fly ball falls untouched and, in the scorer’s judgment, the fielder could have handled the ball with ordinary effort, the official scorer shall charge such fielder with an error.

I have watched this happen over 1000 times in my life at the big league level and seen HIT put next to the play instead of error. Sorry, I live in the real world, a place where the scorekeepers don’t follow rules.

E’enin’, folks. Apologies if this has been posted already. It’s a blurb in BP by Marc Normandin:

During the broadcast of Saturday night’s game, the Mets’ announcing team began to discuss the fact that Adam Dunn was leading National League left fielders in putouts. Though Dunn is actually second in the NL as of this writing (behind Milwaukee’s recently-converted corner outfielder Ryan Braun) it still may take a second for that thought to sink in, thanks to the image of him we all carry around in our minds. The Reds left fielder is a big, plodding guy, both in the outfield and on the base paths, and he’s been accused of being incapable of properly fielding left in the past thanks to poor conditioning. This season appears to be different though—not only is Dunn second in the NL in putouts (and fourth in the majors) but he’s also fifth in the majors in John Dewan’s Revised Zone Rating. Out of the qualifiers, Matt Holliday leads the league with a .925 RZR, Carlos Quentin is in last at .826, and Adam Dunn is comfortably above the average at .903, and even has 25 plays made outside of his zone. Looking at our own FRAA tells the same story as Dunn is at +6—a result of both this and his .314 EqA (second best of his career)—and is on pace to have the best year on his resume right before hitting free agency.

Teams interested in signing Dunn should take note of his defensive play in order to see if he’s truly progressed, or if this is a short, half-season blip on the statistical radar. Is Dunn taking better routes to the ball to make up for his lack of speed? Has he improved his conditioning to the point where he can get from Point A to Point B quickly without the use of a bullpen car? If he’s even an average outfielder defensively, he’s one of the more productive players in the league thanks to a bat that ranks with the best (even when he hits .230) and if he’s able to replicate this year’s success in the long run, he’s going to be worth at least a full win with the glove on the year, something I didn’t expect to be typing in my lifetime.

    Discuss amongst yourselves.

Batman. I’m still mulling this one over. I loved the movie, but I don’t know that I will if I think about it too much. And yet the writers worked so hard to make it a serious film. Hm.

Watchmen trailer. I fear that the movie’s gonna one long music video, like the trailer. Boo.

heheh Doing already. Made a couple good plays today and one bad play (let a hard grounder eat me alive). I seem to have decent instincts.

So I’ve gone from a outfielder into a 3B/2B for the team which is fun.

  71. Comment posted by Danny on July 20, 2008 at 11:37 pm (#772723)

3B is hard, man. At least at second, you can afford to knock the ball down. But at third, the ball is either hit to you very hard or very soft, and then you still have the long throw to contend with.

The comic book material it was based upon was one in a long series of attempts by Frank Miller to romanticize a premodern masculine culture of honor. Alot of the crap in that movie was so off and it glorified a culture which collapsed under the weight of its own tyranny and oppression of its slaves.

Yeah, it is. I seem to have some decent natural instincts so far. Made two plays today charging in on a softly hit ball, scoop, throw to first on the room. Had one exciting play. Guy hit the ball to right center, sure double maybe triple. He goes for three, the cutoff throw was a short hot right in front of me. I managed to glove it just as he came in spikes first.

I was a late reader, I think I had trouble reading at first when I started kindergarten at 4. By 5 I was solid, by 7 I could read anything. I remember reading Jurassic Park and the teachers being confused why a 9 year old thought it was fluff.
