Daily Mets Recap: July 1st, 2008

The Game

The Mets turned in a lackluster performance last night in St. Louis, as they fell to the Red Birds 3-1. Under Jerry Manuel’s reign as manager, the Mets have been no better than mediocre, at 6-7. On the year, they slip back to two games under .500, at 40-42.

John Maine got the start for the Mets last night, and simply didn’t have it. It was obvious that Maine’s fastball was a bit flat in the first inning, as he’d give up two runs on two singles and two walks. Had it not been for a Troy Glaus doubleplay, the first inning may have put the Mets out of the game for good.

Fortunately, the Mets offense took the responsibility of losing the game onto themselves. The Mets scored just one unearned run the entire evening, on a ball that Rick Ankiel threw into the Mets dugout from centerfield. Kyle Lohse, Ron Villone and Mark Mulder combined to throw nine innings of seven hit, zero unearned run baseball. New York didn’t seem to play with maximum effort, or even maximum interest. In the bottom of the 2nd, Luis Castillo let a grounder off the bat of Skip Schumaker go right through his hobbly, taped up legs. During the next batter’s at-bat, John Maine made an errant throw to Carlos Delgado that allowed Schumaker to advance to third base. During Maine’s error, Castillo recovered the ball and nearly threw it into the Mets dugout, had it not been for an athletic catch from David Wright. I can almost live with a .261 average from Castillo if he’s superb on defense, but he really hasn’t been. His fielding percentage has been at .980 this year.

This just wasn’t a good night at all for the Mets. John Maine got shelled for seven hits and five runs (three of which earned) through a laborious four innings. Carlos Muniz then came in, and gave up a two run Chris Duncan home run to put the Mets at a 7-1 disadvantage. The Mets will have to rely on former Montreal Expo Tony Armas Jr. tonight. Armas had a forgettable season last year in Pittsburgh, but did have a somewhat decent strikeout rate (73 K’s in 97 innings). Lets hope he has the right stuff to defeat Todd Wellemyer and the Cardinals at 7:10.

The Haiku

Maine has no command
Lohse is nice one-year flyer
But the Mets need bats
