Well, it’s not a counting stat, so you do have to look at the game log to get a sense of his overall performance:

Delgado is the perfect storm of suck for WPA.

A guy with declining skills/performance on a team that doesnt have the suitable parts to bat him lower in the order.

so his declining skills are still coming up in big spots with lots of guys on and his fails cost him LOTS.

Dep - I think a lot of fans, especially older fans, don’t look at OBP (or many of the “new” stats for that matter). They look at the stats shown on TV when the guy comes to the plate:

    AVG
    HR
    RBI

    That’s it.

    This is pretty fucked up:

The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are spirited combatants on the field, and after the most recent Coco Crisp/James Shields donnybrook, tensions are running extremely high going into this series. But, this time around, the Sox have much more to worry about than a Scott Kazmir fastball to the ear hole.

According to the Boston Herald, an anonymous Memphis-based Sox hater has mailed several death threats to some of the “black and Latin players” on the Red Sox, which has team members seriously spooked.

Right now authorities are doing everything they can to keep the players safe — extra security has been called in and some players will get escorts to and from the stadium —but there’s been no progress in tracking down the author of the letters.

Hopefully all the white guys on the Red Sox don’t feel left out by the extra attention their teammates are getting. That would be bad for chemistry.

  72. Comment posted by Ed in Westchester 2.0 is an optimistic yahoo on June 30, 2008 at 5:11 pm (#746069)

MC - why the ƒuck would someone order this jersey?

Yesterday, while leaving Shea Stadium, I saw a guy wearing a Scott Kazmir Mets jersey.

I stopped him and asked if he spent money on it prior to the trade, or after. Naturally, he ordered it online after the trade.

What’s interesting, though, is it was sent to him with a space between the Z and M in the last name.

Apparently, he said, the team will not ship out jerseys with No. 19 and the full last name of Kazmir on a Mets jersey.

…from what i can gather, this is their policy for any player who is not on the Mets, and has more to do with the league than the specific team…the thing is, i just can’t see how this is enforced…however, in a case like kazmir, which is so obvious, and such a notorious deal, it makes sense that it would be censored…

…i had never heard of such a scenario, and wonder if any other fans have gone through the same situation…

  73. Comment posted by Danny on June 30, 2008 at 5:13 pm (#746070)

ok, so WARP3 says Guzman doesnt belong on the same field as Reyes/Ramirez in terms of 2008 production, and WARP does include defense.

I like to have that AND win shares. it covers you moreso for crazy things one system may encounter.

  78. Comment posted by Gangstas get on the field on June 30, 2008 at 5:22 pm (#746073)

The Red Sox are confident it wasn’t Manny just being Manny.

Manny Ramirez has apologized for pushing the team’s traveling secretary to the ground in the visitors clubhouse during a confrontation Saturday in Houston, according to a report in The Providence Journal.

    Ramirez
Ramirez had requested 16 tickets from Jack McCormick for Saturday’s game against the Astros, the report said.

After McCormick said that might not be possible, Ramirez replied by yelling, “Just do your job,” according to Monday’s report.

Ramirez and McCormick later discussed the incident in a private meeting, during which the left fielder made amends.

“That’s over,” Ramirez said Sunday, according to the report. “We’re fine now.”

Boston manager Terry Francona said the team had resolved the matter and was “satisfied with how we handled this.”

“Sometimes things happen,” Francona said, according to The Journal. “And when they do, we choose to handle them internally.”

Said McCormick: “It was an unfortunate misunderstanding and it’s over with as far as I’m concerned.”

It wasn’t the first time this season Ramirez was forced to put a sour incident behind him.

Ramirez, who on May 31 became the 24th major leaguer to hit 500 home runs, had to be separated from first baseman Kevin Youkilis earlier this month after apparently taking a swing at him during a dugout argument.

“It’s in the past,” Ramirez said the next day. “It’s a new day.”

-Orlando Hernandez, on the DL with a right foot injury, is throwing off the mound in Florida.

-Angel Pagan, on the DL with a bruised left shoulder, could be facing season-ending surgery.
