    Holy schnakies…

Angels lose a combined no-hitter to the Dodgers.

I love that kinda thing, the kind of statistical freak occurence that can only happen in baseball’s stat freak kingdom.

Looks like Beltran needs a rest - four strike outs in four at bats. Did I read that correctly from the box score?

FMart is shining - hit a home run yesterday and I believe had three hits the day before.

Who is this pitcher Aguilar with the BMets? Not exactly young (approaching 26) but is putting up some nice numbers.

What the heck happened to AHern?? He hit about .350 the last three months of the season last year? Now the poor guy cannot break .190.

The problem with resting Beltran is… are you really gonna put an outfield of Anderson-Endy-Foxtrot in to start a major league baseball game?

Other than the possibility of the opposing team coughing up a bunch of errors because they’re too busy laughing, wouldn’t it essentially be a forfeit?

  4. Comment posted by NjMF on June 29, 2008 at 6:01 am (#744505)

They were strike outs looking with the ball right down the pipe for Beltran.

Santana gives up 3 runs and we cant win. The guy has the 5th best ERA in NL and his record doesnt show for it because The Mess cant score. 15 runs here and 8 runs there mean nothing.
And now we have Wild Ollie today

GOOD LUCK SHEA TODAY WITH OLLIE El PereziDENTED

Thanks. NjMF. I’m honestly not looking forward to this at all. Between the heat, humidity. predicted thunderstorms, Yankee fans and Oliver Perez pitching, I think I’d just as soon be going for a colonoscopy……ugh!

    shea,

I went yesterday and the Yankee fans (while still obnoxious) were not as bad as they’ve been in previous years. The weather, however, sucked, as did the game. I hope your seats are protected by an overhang - mine were, and so I was able to stay dry during the storm.

  8. Comment posted by sheadenizen on June 29, 2008 at 9:42 am (#744508)

Thanks, jess. Unfortunately I’m not under an overhang. I’ve in the first row…upper boxes. Oh well….as Doris Day once said so eloquently…que sera sera! Go Mets!

Have a great time, Shea! Remember … You can always pace the concourse like me!

At least Ollie often steps it up for big games.

    From Adam Rubin. Haha.

Let’s just say Brian Schneider and Ryan Church go back a ways, enough to make Schneider feel comfortable making this crack Sunday morning when they entered the clubhouse together:

“Hey, what inning do you think he gets a concussion?”

Church, who presumed Schneider was hitting directly behind him in the order, responded in jest: “Over-under on number of good pitches I’m going to see if he’s behind me.”

Good (scary) point LittleFalls, but isn’t that what Manuel had in mind (forfeiting?) when he said he would rest his regulars. On the other hand, it might not be that bad - Church is due back. And despite all the bad rap Endy gets about this hitting, he can hit a little bit.

I wonder if Boras is cringing over Ollie’s overall performance this year, or he welcomes the challenge to get someone with a 9-14 record, 5 plus ERA a 15 million dollar per year contract.

Top 5 Met Hitters in WPA

    1)David Wright 1.50
    2)Carlos Beltran 1.49
    3)Ryan Church 0.86
    4)Moises Alou 0.72
    5)Jose Reyes 0.51

*sighs it cannot be overstated how much this team misses alou and church in this lineup. Despite the low number of at bats, they still are 3 and 4 respectfully on this team.

  19. Comment posted by Kneel Before Zod! on June 29, 2008 at 11:29 am (#744520)

    what is WPA?

  20. Comment posted by John is Optimistic about the Team on June 29, 2008 at 11:33 am (#744521)

    Win Probabilty Added.

Say you had a 50% chance of winning…….jose hits a HR and the WP goes to 60%……then jose is credited with .100 of WPA.

There’s some flaws to it but i think its a good way of showing who does what in big spots and who contributes the most to winning the game.

  21. Comment posted by Kneel Before Zod! on June 29, 2008 at 11:37 am (#744522)

seems a bit self-evident. when your best players play well, you win.

  22. Comment posted by John is Optimistic about the Team on June 29, 2008 at 11:46 am (#744523)

    Yeah pretty much.

Basically it gives credit to where credit is due.

Delgado and Castillo are on the bottom lol.

john, I don’t know if that’s a valid interpretation. If you hit a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the 9th on Opening Day, and subsequently suffer a season-ending concussion during the celebration at home plate, your WPA would be higher than Church’s, no?

Im still bugging out over that no hitter lose. I picture this happening to us when we finally get ours. Only with all 9 players getting injured and Chipper Jones somehow taunting us at the end. Also lots of pink elephants and flying kittens. I be having some weird dreams.

Going to Monticello Raceway to catch the game and see if I can hit on some ponies. Good luck to all in attendace today and everyone on here. Remember, if we win today we still take the series from the Skankees. No braggin rights for you!!!

  33. Comment posted by John is Optimistic about the Team on June 29, 2008 at 12:09 pm (#744532)

You got a point. Its not really a counting stat. The more you play the more opportunity you have from your WPA to increase……..likewise the more you play the more opportunity you have for it to decrease as well.

I think the point was that when they were getting at bats, they contributed……and alot more then some of the regulars we have in there now.

  34. Comment posted by John is Optimistic about the Team on June 29, 2008 at 12:10 pm (#744533)

Your right. And i could be totally wrong but I think instead of WPA…we need to be looking at WPA/LI which would strip something like that out.

isnt WPA also a function or at least affected by how well your team does over that period of time.

like, the more your team wins, the more WPA there is to go around (or at least less negative WPA)

Yeah its affected by how your team does. I think its all about dividing up the wins.

Kinda like with win shares….how if a team wins 80 games say……there’s 240 win shares to go around.

haha not really …….i just wanted to point out that we are missing 2 of our most productive hitters lol. It could be why the offense stinks right now lol.

That and adding guys like schneider and giving castillo 4 years but anyways………lol

  46. Comment posted by John is Optimistic about the Team on June 29, 2008 at 12:29 pm (#744542)

Win Shares has gotten better now that they allow negative win shares…….it didnt make sense to take the neg guys to zero……james was taking away win shares from the more productive batters doing that.

Wait, our offense stinks b/c we gave castillo 4 years? Is everyone else boycotting hitting out of jealousy? ;)

I don’t really get the hate over castillo’s contract…i mean, Omar gave him less money for more years - if we eat the last year, so be it - it’s not THAT much $.

That said, he hasn’t been the problem on this team - I don’t think team would be doing better with Kaz Mat or that scrappy guy who sucks
