SAN DIEGO — Concern within the Mets’ clubhouse for Ryan Church increased on Friday night when, for the second time in three games, the team’s regular right fielder was excluded from the starting lineup and later, when Church told Willie Randolph he was unable to pinch-hit. While Church explained his situation as “just wasn’t able to [pinch-] hit,” a teammate said Church still was suffering with symptoms of vertigo.

Teammates are worried for him and, one said, hopeful he will be assigned to the disabled list and given an extended opportunity to recover.

I’m sure Benson was mr. innocent on that boating incident!

Bears RB Cedric Benson was arrested and charged with drunken driving in downtown Austin, Texas.
Benson was stopped for a traffic violation and refused a breathalyzer and blood test. On the heels of Benson’s BWI incident, the rogue running back may be more trouble than he’s worth to the Bears. It’s going to be tough to overlook the continued off the field woes of a player who has also been underwhelming on the field. Jun. 7 - 10:36 am et

I was at the game last night.

    Thoughts:

The Tatis experiment is over. The carriage has turned back into a pumpkin. He can’t field and now he can’t hit. Back to AAA.

Luis Castillo needs to be benched for one game but Willie won’t do it because Luis is a vet. But that was one of the laziest plays I have seen all season and I saw it happening right from the get go.

Before the game I chatted with two people: 1) Mike Pelfrey. I talked to him about Wichita State hanging on to beat Florida State, and how he had gutted through last night and I thought pitched well enough to win. He shrugged his shoulders and laughed when I told him how nervous I got in the bottom of the ninth as Florida State mounted their comeback. I came back later (he was talking to friends behind home plate and asked if he would sign a ball for my brother. It was very nice of him and he did so.

    2) Heath Bell. I talked to him about how I wished he was still a Met and he said and I quote “blame your manager.” I then said, “and Rick Peterson?” and Heath Bell laughed and rolled his eyes to show his displeasure. You can tell there is no love lost between Heath and Rick. Just like several years before Aaron Harang also told me about how he didn’t like Rick Peterson at all. It’s Rick’s way or the highway. He looked dominant last night.

    3) This team isn’t very good and their plate approaches were terrible in many instances. It’s like they didn’t even look at the scouting reports: especially Delgado and the bottom of the order for Hoffman. You wonder how much longer HoJo is going to get…we didn’t give Rick Down this much leeway.

You don’t fool around with concussions, a competitor like church, who seems to be a gamer and scrappy, will not have a governor on himself to keep himself out of the lineup. Seems he was rushed back.

Church should be shut down for AT LEAST two weeks and re-evaluated then. I’m starting to get. Very afraid we may not see him again for a long time. In many ways, he’s arguably been our best player (along with Wright), and it’s sad to see this situation develop. The goal now (as it should have been two weeks ago) is to think of his career, not the next game or week.

I worry a little about Carp’s lack of power in May but all the other things are there (average + patience) and he’s cut down on his strike outs. I don’t think it would be a HORRIBLY panicked move to try him out in AAA since he essentially got half a season in AA last year….

I don’t think it would be a HORRIBLY panicked move to try him out in AAA since he essentially got half a season in AA last year….

He had an off May but has been on fire this June with a 1.545 OPS for the month in 19 abs. Basically, I think its time to move him up sooner than later for a myriad of reasons. He will be 22 by the end of June, so he will be old enough. We just drafted Ike Davis anyways so he will be behind him and ready to be in Binghampton sooner than later with the way the Mets seem to want to rush him out of college. And lastly and most importantly, Carpy has a near season (146 games, 544 abs) of experience in AA ball already. Jay Bruce only had 16 games and 66 abs of ball in AA Chattqa for the Reds when he was moved up at 20/21 years of age. So then why can’t Carpy be moved up to New Orleans?

Then he will have a full season of games in Binghampton. Maybe he can still get around half a season of work in New Orleans and then another half plus in 08′ before a possible callup opportunity. Who’s with me?

Ok, thanks Lunk and Deppy. The reason I ask is because Carp’s SLG and OPS numbers are considerably better there (. 604/ 1.051 ) than they are on the road ( .477/ .853 ). Also, his power stats against lefties are still pretty weak (.479 SLG, OPS .808) compared to his power stats against righties (.566 SLG/ 1.015 OPS). I think he has platoon written all over him early in his career even if he called up next season after replicating his AA production in New Orleans. But he should be moved up sooner than later.

I can’t even put Mike Carp in the same sentence as Joey Votto yet alone Jay Bruce. I have never seen Carp play in person but I haven’t heard anyone here who has seen him glow about the guy. He is just an ordinary prospect that happens to be at a position where we have a geratric patient filling right now. I say keep him in double A until he can put together 2 solid months back to back at the level then call him up to the big leagues. The competition is not at triple A in my opinion. Triple A is filled with 4 A players like the Andy Tracy’s of the world and a few washed up guys, sprinkled with a few prospects.

Comparing Carp to Bruce should end with they play baseball, are male and are americans. I don’t like how they have projected Bruce to be the next Williams but Jay Bruce never needed double A. I don’t think he needed triple A. He is a guy who is really just a natural hitter. Hopefully the hype doesnt mess him up

Ike Davis shouldn’t be intimidated by Citi Field.

The Mets’ top pick in the draft already was taking batting practice off Hall of Famer Goose Gossage at Yankee Stadium at 14 years old.

Davis’ father Ron was a big league reliever for 11 seasons, including from 1978 to 1981 as a Yankee. The elder Davis is a regular attendee at old timers’ games, including a scheduled appearance this Aug. 2 in the Bronx. Ike Davis even had a chance to hit in a cage with Derek Jeter and Tino Martinez as a teenager during one of those events.

“You always worry about people if they can play in New York,” said Ron Davis, now a baseball instructor in Phoenix. “His demeanor is such that I don’t believe it would bug him to play in New York. Some people can’t play in certain places. The

Holliday is not the superstar ppl think he is outside of coors, look at his road OPS the last few seasons, he had a huge year last year but outside of that. he’s average on the road.

in 2008 he’s right around his 5-year average road OPS of .770-.780

that’s the kind of production we’re gonna get from him in Shea, not the coors inflated stuff.

I honestly would rather have Church, i think he’s a better player or at least even.

and then you’re subtracting a bullpen arm as well, yes heils is not doing good, but he’s still an arm that would have to replaced.

thus i think that deal would make the mets worse.

The argument can be made that it ONLY makes sense for Colorado to pay him the superstar bucks he’s going to be looking for. another team may do it, but it certainly may not be worth it, while it could be worth it for colorado.

or can colorado spend that money elsewhere and expect the same kind of home-inflated #’s from whomever they sign or bring in??? its an interesting question.

Then why did the Reds rush Jay Bruce up fast to develop in AAA then?

Fuck if I know. I’m not going to argue with someone comparing his rise with Carp, a mediocre prospect who had one good month, a down to earth month and 8 days in June of good production. I guess that is how desperate some met fans are to make idiotic comparisons to a guy that Carp, in any world, wouldnt be able to sniff the jock strap of. If Carp gets called up, it’s to the Mets and not that rag tag piece of shit team we’re fielding in New Orleans. I’m telling you right now, I don’t want to see Obie platooning Abreu and Carp in games vs the Memphis redbirds.

Look at the Mets. The Mets have adopted an approach of having vets at New Orleans with a small sampling of prospects, who have either already been in the majors or fringy guys who top out at triple A. A lot of teams have taken that approach. The Braves, Dodgers and others. The Reds still utilize triple A for prospect enhancement (see Bailey, Bruce, Votto, the SS guy there now and Denorfia *who’s elbow injury has wrecked his career*. One reason is the ease of calling someone up from Louisville as oppose to calling up someone from Chattanooga. Although Delta provides Nonstop service to Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincy airport from Chattanooga, Louisville is still much closer. Once we get a triple A team closer to New York, we will see a similar trend.

A lot of people, including myself, believed that Cincy took a conservative approach with both Votto and Bruce when it came to calling them up when they were ready. I thought Votto was ready to start the season last year and Bruce was ready out of Spring Training this year.

There is exactly one reason they waited as long as they did to call up Bruce - service time.

    #### if I know. If Carp gets called up, it’s to the Mets and not that rag tag piece of #### team we’re fielding in New Orleans. I’m telling you right now, I don’t want to see Obie platooning Abreu and Carp in games vs the Memphis redbirds

Who’s arguing? I asked you a legitimate question, I wasn’t arguing. If AAA is such a wasteful place to develop talent then why did the Reds rush Bruce up there so fast after playing for little time in AA in comparison? If this is your answer…

…then fine, I you have answered my question. But you don’t need to resort to being an utter dickhead when I asked a serious comparitive question not aware of the differences in organizational philosophies between the Mets and Reds. I don’t read Baseball Prospectus or any baseball magazine like others here do.

And, BTW, I never ONCE said Carp was the same level of prospect as the great Bruce. I only compared how the two organizations handled them to see if the Mets were waiting to too long to move Carp to AAA and Bruce was an extreme comparison of a dude who practically bypassed AA in a near leap from A to AAA in a few weeks time. But I should have never done that because there was bound to be someone (or two) who read through it and immediately took umbrage at the very mention of the two in the same paragraph.

My apologies oh great guru for trying to ask questions about Carp and wondering about our farm system. The next time I ask questions, I will be sure to direct them somewheres else so that I don’t offend your great baseball intellect with my mundane and naive questions.
