John, what makes you think Stache can’t still play 2B?

Besides, we could use a good lefty bat to help us out against the righties.

    Wow, great winning attitude here.

The gulf between Orlando Cabrera and Ozzie Guillen seems as wide as Lake Michigan after the White Sox’s shortstop implied Tuesday he didn’t have the support of his manager after placing two calls during games to complain about unfavorable official scoring.

“If it happens again, I will call again,” Cabrera said. “I don’t have to do it with other teams because they always had my back. They don’t want to do it here, I can take care of my own business. If you have a problem with what I did, come to me and say something. Don’t go to the media to send a message, because he didn’t send any message.”

Sox players rarely have questioned Guillen publicly since he took over in 2004. However, Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and general manager Ken Williams have criticized him for being too protective of his players.

But Cabrera, who is enjoying a renaissance at the plate, feels as if he’s on his own island after feeling neglected. Cabrera personally called the press box May 3 in Toronto and Thursday at U.S. Cellular to express his displeasure over errors charged against him. Both calls were overturned, but Guillen reiterated he thought the phone calls were made for selfish reasons.

“I never had anybody complain about that stuff,” said Cabrera, who won his second Gold Glove Award last season with the Los Angeles Angels. “If there was a major-league player who tells me he’s not selfish, he’s lying. Everyone is selfish about numbers, because that’s the only thing people cannot lie about. That’s it. It’s not a big deal. I don’t know who’s trying to make this a big deal. Maybe it’s the media, maybe it’s the manager. And nobody is complaining about that stuff. Nobody cares about that.”

It’s not uncommon for a uniformed member of the Sox’s staff to call a member of the media relations staff to ask an official scorer to review a call.

“We don’t mind doing it,” said Guillen, adding that he has placed calls to Chicago veteran official scorer Bob Rosenberg to question calls.

But as a player, Guillen said he once regretted calling the press box to protest an error charged against him. Guillen said his manager criticized him privately.

“Like I said, be careful what you’re doing, what you’re saying, because when people find out, you have 25 guys to respond to questions,” Guillen said. “I’m not mad about the case. I wish he would have handled that a little bit better. I’m the worst manager about [complaining to] scorers.

“… If Cabrera doesn’t feel protected by that, I think it’s wrong. I’m here for them, they’re not here for me. I don’t even remember what play it was. In the ’80s, you didn’t even care about it. Now, there are a lot of people with hurt feelings. It’s not about feelings, it’s about winning. [But] he has the right to do it.”

It appears this will be Cabrera’s first and final season playing for the Sox. The free-agent-to-be declined to say whether he feels comfortable with the Sox.

“That’s a tough question for me,” Cabrera said. “I don’t want to address it right now. We can talk about it in a couple of weeks.”

    Williams seemed weary of Cabrera.

“Am I aware of some of the stuff that has been going on with Cabrera? Yes,” Williams told a pool reporter. “I also know it has been addressed to him face-to-face. The one thing Cabrera needs to know about Ozzie is he has faults, and his No. 1 fault is that he protects his players too much. If Orlando doesn’t understand that, he needs to talk to his neighbors.”

Actually, I take back what I said about Valentin. He’s probably a better 2B at this point than Castillo, Anderson, or Easley.

BobbyOrlando Bonilla Cabrera is calling to complain about errors? And he is bitching that Guillen isn’t supporting him?

    What an asshat.

Did he really, shea? We put so much pressure on Wright and Reyes, and I don’t know if they are ready to haul the ship by themselves. Maybe in another year or two.

  32. Comment posted by sheadenizen on May 28, 2008 at 5:21 pm (#708313)

I swear Danny. He’s on with Mike and Chris and of course they asked what was going on with Jose? Has he lost focus? Willie response…..absolutely not! Actually, it’s totally the opposite. He tries too hard. He tries to do too much. He just needs to get back and do his job and not try to take on too much responsibilty. Of course it’s not an exact quote…but it’s damn close.

  33. Comment posted by Danny on May 28, 2008 at 5:22 pm (#708314)

It seems pretty obvious to me but I’m slightly biased regarding Mr. Reyes ;-)

  34. Comment posted by sheadenizen on May 28, 2008 at 5:24 pm (#708315)

slightly? HA! lol! But that’s the word from Willie. So who’s going to tell Delcos?

  35. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on May 28, 2008 at 5:25 pm (#708316)

I stopped reading Delcos towards the end of last year. Why reward a no talent hack working for a second rate paper with pageviews. Reyes is hitting, so bench him because he might suck in game. As per his Lastings comments, he who laughs last laughs best, his numbers are coming up slowly but surely.

Pete Rose said on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday that he bet around $2,000 per game on the Reds while he was managing them.

“It was like $2,000. That’s it,” Rose said in the interview. “And it didn’t change — because I know you’re going to say, Well betting’s all about pitching and stuff like that — I didn’t care who was pitching for me or who was pitching for the opposition. I just made it easy for the guys making the bets and just bet this much every game and that’s the way we did it.”

In his 2004 book, My Prison Without Bars, Rose had admitted to betting $1,000 per game as manager of the Reds, starting in 1987, and said he bet $2,000 on football games. The $2,000 figure for baseball bets was mentioned in 1989’s Dowd Report, the findings of baseball’s investigation into Rose’s gambling, but Rose had never previously confirmed that amount.

Rose was banned from baseball for life by then-commissioner Bart Giamatti in September 1989 but denied those allegations until early 2004, when he came clean and admitted to betting on the Reds while he was their manager.

The banishment has kept baseball’s all-time hits leader out of the Hall of Fame. Rose, who retired after the 1986 season, compiled 4,256 hits, made 17 All-Star teams at five different positions, won the 1963 NL Rookie of the Year award, the 1973 NL MVP award and helped three teams to World Series titles. He managed the Reds from 1984 until his banishment in 1989.

I was listening to that Rose interview with Dan Patrick. IMO, Rose is analagous to an abusive ex-spouse. He says repeatedly say sorry and there’s nothing he wants more than to get back together with the ex. However, despite all the his apologies, you can still tell that he still thinks that it’s the abused ex-spouse fault for divorcing him.

I actually just got done reading an old profile of Pete Rose Jr. by Pat Jordan–I highly recommend his new collection, by the way–and while I academically knew Pete was a deadbeat dad, how he treated his family was simply appalling.
