Wise:
He’s delighted merely to be back with the big league team. Port St. Lucie, Fla., can wear on a guy, and he has spent most of the last three months there in the sprawling burg where the Mets train.
“Lots of Chili’s and the Outback,” he said. “I let the waiters and waitresses order for me. They know I’ve had almost everything on the menus.”

Let’s play TWO!
Is there anything better than waking up on a beautiful Saturday and looking forward to the double dip?
No, there isn’t, more or less.
I have to start writing one final paper but I will at least watch most of the Pelfrey game. I have a good feeling about today!

with a doubleheader in the mix, that wont be so easy. taking both today would be a great first step

The Marlins and Hanley Ramirez have reportedly come to terms on a six-year, $70 million contract.
A big step in the right direction for Florida. Assuming that the deal starts next year, it’d buy out all three years of arbitration and three years of free agency. Given his numbers, Ramirez could stand to make $40 million in arbitration alone. As a 28-year-old free agent, he would have been in line for one of the biggest contracts in major league history. Kevin Devaney here, filling in for John Delcos at Shea as the Mets play a doubleheader with the Reds.
It should be a long day of baseball. First game is 1:10; the second is 7:10. Amazingly, this is the fifth doubleheader (between covering the Mets and Yankees) I’ve been assigned to in three seasons. That’s got to be some kind of record.
The lineup for Game 1:
Mets
Reyes, SS
Castillo, 2B
Wright, 3B
Beltran, CF
Church, RF
Alou, LF
Delgado, 1B
Schneider, C
Santana, P
Pregame notes: Angel Pagan (shoulder) said today that he still isn’t fully healed from his plunge into the stands in L.A. and likely won’t be available today. “It’s getting better every day,” the outfielder said. “I might need two more days.” It’s not ideal to be short-handed on the day of a doubleheader, but the Mets will adjust. Pagan didn’t think he’d be available to pinch hit, either. My gut is that he ends up on the DL. … Reliever Matt Wise still hasn’t been activated from the DL, although he is here. The Mets are waiting for when they need him, which just might be after the first game today. … Mike Pelfrey is starting the second game. Randolph said that he expects to him to “mosey on in” soon.
A few other thoughts:
— It will be interesting to see who plays the second game for the Mets. Randolph said he wanted to keep Santana on target for today’s first game because he was his “best guy” and didn’t want to disrupt him. It’s probably that Willie knows Delgado, Beltran, Castillo, and Alou won’t play both games, and would rather not throw a weak lineup behind Santana.
— If Pelfrey struggles today with his command, there might be some truth to the idea that he was at his best earlier this season because Raul Casanova was catching him. Casanova has been designated for assignment and Ramon Castro is back. Castro will catch the second game.
— Randolph insists that Delgado was dropped to the No. 7 spot in the order to break up the lefties. Makes sense, I guess. But it can’t do much for Delgado’s psyche to be dropped yet again.
Enjoy the game. I’ll be back with updates.

4/7 is .560 baseball and historically this a good road team. To me while the Reds and Nats aren’t great teams by any stretch they aren’t so bad where they can beat you a couple of times. I could live with 4-3.

Reds + nats are both last place teams. 29-42 combined. i agree its not a cakewalk and lesser teams always seem to play the mets tough, but if the mets wanna be a winning team, at some point they gotta start acting like it.

The doubleheader is the only reason Smith is still on the roster, per Noble on mets.com
But now Wise has rejoined the team, though he hasn’t been added to the roster. When he is, Smith will be optioned to Triple-A, despite his effective pitching. That is the plan, a person in the Mets hierarchy said Friday. But the postponement of the Mets’ game against the Reds on Friday night, the resulting doubleheader on Saturday and the chance for bullpen overload in two games prompted the club to retain Smith on the roster.

Considering he’s pre-arbitration still and DW got $54 million over the same amount of time he did OK for himself.
He’s arb-eligible next year, and the new precedents for arb awards makes it likely that Hanley was due for at least $30M during his arb years–starting with roughly $9M next year, by all accounts. However, that wasn’t my point. Unless the deal has a no-trade clause, it’s incredibly lopsided for the Marlins, because they will control an elite position player during his prime years, and that’s invaluable to them in terms of continuing their “business” model.
