The 2007 Draft: Yikes!
by: NYNarwhal on May 6, 2008 6:55 PM | Filed under: Journals

I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves:

1rst round pick Eddie Kunz (AA): 1-1, 6.39 RA (9 R in 12.2 IP), 1.5 K/BB

1rst round pick Nathan Vineyard (Low A): 0-2, 14.63 ERA, out for the year

2nd round pick Scott Moviel (Low A): 2-4, 8.37 ERA, 5. 7 K/9, 14 H/9 (37 H in 23.2 IP), 1.94 WHIP

2nd round pick Brant Rustich: ?????????????????????

3rd round pick Eric Niesen (High A):  0-3, 5.33 ERA, 4.33 BB/9 (but 7.00 K/9, so there’s hope?)

3rd round pick Steven Clyne (High A): 0-1, 16.71 RA, 18 baserunners in 7 IP

4rth round pick Richard Lucas (Low A): .202/.273/.313 in 99 at-bats

Nobody else in the top ten rounds has played yet except….

…7th round pick Lucas Duda, who apparently didn’t get the memo, as he’s hitting .317/.396/.463 with St Lucie.

Beyond the top ten, lhp Mike Antonini is 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA for low-A Savannah, and St Lucie pitchers Dylan Owen and Dillon Gee are doing okay, but not a good start for the newest group of Mets.

Um, praise Jeebus for Lucas Duda.

I was really discouraged by the Vineyard shoulder surgery. I really liked his potential. Hopefully he comes up strong.

I think Owen and Gee might continue to surprise.

But seriously though, what the hell did happen to Rustich?

Rustich is around, i posted an article about him recently (for Griff lol)

He’ll be sent to PSL and start there, i forgot the holdup, maybe a minor injury.

    here’s the article from 4/3/08

some excerpts that speak to what happened probly. I think we’ll see him soon (hopefully!)

Rustich was scheduled to start the Mets’ first Grapefruit League game, but was scratched because of tightness in his pitching arm.

“I think I made a smart decision telling them I needed a little rest,” Rustich said. “I built up my arm strength more gradually.”

Though his sore arm may force Rustich to miss a couple of starts at the beginning of this season, St. Lucie manager Tim Teufel expects Rustich to be an important part of the starting rotation.

“He’s got an attitude - the attitude you want to see in a guy his size,” Teufel said. “I can see how he could light you up and get you excited about him.”

Rustich was lights out last season: 0.81 bb/9, 8.5 k/9, 0.54 whip, 1.61 era - great to see he’s soon to get back on the horse. The 2008 has to be a success or the club’s long-term future will take a big hit.
