I was too busy whooping your argument up to read every post, by the time I was done I didn’t see it posted. Damnit, that’s why I don’t argue as carefully as I used to. I miss out on all of the other fun.

PHL, of course BSG-Original predates Macrosse. But it’s just funny how I keep on getting the Robotech vibe from this series of BSG.

I’m glad i didnt see that, ugh!

I dont get the part about saying oh his BABIP is right around career average so it is what it is.

Can you just then ignore LD% and expected BABIP and how delgado’s babip is usually where it should be for most of his career?

it seems like i can make a counter case that he isnt completely done using different saber stuff. i guess that’s saber for you sometimes.

  39. Comment posted by Jessica on April 24, 2008 at 5:25 pm (#668423)

Hmm, lemme take a look at Delgado’s LD% vs. expected BABIP:

    2002 - 19.6 LD%, .316 eBABIP, .309 BABIP
    2003 - 27.0 LD%, .390 eBABIP, .332 BABIP
    2004 - 20.6 LD%, .326 eBABIP, .293 BABIP
    2005 - 22.7 LD%, .347 eBABIP, .338 BABIP
    2006 - 17.9 LD%, .299 eBABIP, .276 BABIP
    2007 - 17.7 LD%, .297 eBABIP, .290 BABIP

  41. Comment posted by Dep on April 24, 2008 at 5:27 pm (#668424)

hmmmmmmmm, that does look a little on the low side. i took danny’s word

I thought about that already as well. I looked at his previous years, and his actual vs. expected BABIPs were maybe slightly lower, but nothing significant.

  42. Comment posted by sheadenizen on April 24, 2008 at 5:29 pm (#668425)

    Thanks Jess. I needed that…ugh!

  44. Comment posted by Dep on April 24, 2008 at 5:29 pm (#668426)

I mean he’s almost a 100 pts lower than his expected.

even that chart doesnt support that kind of discrepancy imo.

I dont know, i guess it just bothered me comparing BABIP to career BABIP and saying its right. That doesnt jive with me.

Imo, tying it to LD% makes a helluva lot more sense. at least more than just his career BABIP

  45. Gravatar
  46. Comment posted by Dep on April 24, 2008 at 5:38 pm (#668427)

and his LD% is higher this year than any other year except 2003. its not even close!

  47. Gravatar
  48. Comment posted by Jessica on April 24, 2008 at 5:39 pm (#668428)

It makes sense that a slow runner like Delgado would consistently underperform his eBABIP by at least a little bit

  50. Comment posted by PHL on April 24, 2008 at 5:40 pm (#668429)

I hope I’m wrong about this, but after flipping through Delgado’s spray charts, it appears that he’s only driven the ball near the warning track or beyond a handful of times this season. That’s probably more telling than LD% or HR/F analysis based on ~90 PAs.

oh yea PHL, his ISO is toast.

his power is gone and aint coming back.

I may remain hopeful, but i aint kidding myself.

And people can say whatever they want, it makes Delgado’s career VERY SUSPICIOUS.

  56. Comment posted by Dep on April 24, 2008 at 5:43 pm (#668432)

hahahahahaha, i’ll paste it here, its so good.

You know what I’m talking about. Three days into the season, a sportswriter disembowels a player for “hitting .028!!! He’s killing his team!!!!” Then a month or two later, it’s completely forgotten because baseball’s season is eternal.

Exhibit A, NUMBER ONE, AWESOME today: Wallace Matthews in Newsday.

Reyes, do you want to be a Jeter or a Rey Ordonez?

We’re 18 games in, Wallace. Please don’t use statistics — which I’m sure you claim not to trust anyway — to crucify a guy who is 24 years old and in all likelihood is going to be fine.

I’ll summarize the intro for you: Derek Jeter is a supergod amongst gods, like all Titan-style, like Cronus and shit. Rey Ordonez was a bust. Jeter rules, Ordonez drools. Et cetera, ad nauseam.

    Here’s the meaty part:

This year, you [Reyes] are hitting only .280.

I’m excited to do this. Are you?

    Jeter: .277.

You have drawn a mere four walks,

    Jeter: 2 walks.

stolen only three bases in five tries,

    Jeter: 0 steals.

    scored only 12 runs.

    Jeter: 7 runs (!)

    Your OBP, .313,

    Jeter: .309.

is worse than all but three other NL leadoff hitters.

    – but better than the living embodiment of heroism, Derek Jeter.

Even Rickie Weeks, batting .192 at the top of the Brewers’ lineup, is getting on base more often than you.

And Jeter. Don’t forget the man whose face I am nominating to adorn the next dollar coin, Derek Jeter.

Jeter is a terrific hitter. Jose Reyes is a terrific player. Wallace Matthews is driving an Underwater StupidTank to Uninformed Thinking Island if he believes that either of their starts is indicative of what their career values will end up being.

Labels: derek jeter, gilloolies, jose reyes, small sample size, underwater stupidtank to uninformed thinking island, wallace matthews

Funny dep, they were talking about that on the FAN today with John Heyman. And he said that Delgado has a reputation for a being a clean player all his career and that this is a natural regression for a slugger of his age who DIDN’T do steroids. I’m just reporting the conversation, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

  59. Comment posted by Dep on April 24, 2008 at 5:47 pm (#668434)

Absolutely, what do i know. But imo anyone who all of a sudden stops hitting in this day n age must be looked at, its not fair not to. Andruw Jones too. he’s younger and maybe that make him more likely or whatever, but I am suspicious.

and imo, this aint regression. this is a cliff dive.

  63. Comment posted by sheadenizen on April 24, 2008 at 5:52 pm (#668437)

I’m not defending him because I don’t have a clue. Andruw is much more suspicious to me because he’s way younger. And of course all of Andruw’s muscle has turned to flab. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Carlos. He still looks to be in good shape.

I’m suspicious of EVERYONE in this day n age.

It might not even roids, it could be amphetamines. According to some folks, 80% of ballplayers took uppers every day to play

maybe he just doesnt have the bat speed or the hop in his step without the uppers.

its all very possible or very ludicrous! Who knows!

(i wouldnt mind the team taking some uppers considering our 1pm game performances UGH)
