Neyer being very optimistic!
Tony (Wilmington, DE): Rob, isn’t 100 wins a little lofty for the Mets considering the quality of the Phillies and Braves, plus the questions about how much Delgado has left in the tank?
SportsNation Rob Neyer: Maybe I should have been more clear … I’m not predicting 100 wins for them. I’m saying they’re the one team in the majors that’s most *likely* to win 100 games. Do you have a better candidate? As for Delgado, he played quite well in the second half last season. I expect a solid whole season this time.

Jacob (Amherst): How can a VORP guy like yourself not take the Rockies seriously? They won 88 games last year (the tiebreaker game is a playoff game, i don’t care what anyone says) and their pythag says that they should have won 91. They lead the NL in hitting all of last year and in ERA in the 2nd half. They did that without Aaron Cook too. If you switched their jerseys with the Mets’, people would be going crazy for this team.
SportsNation Rob Neyer: I don’t know about “people”, Jacob, but I find your analysis less than compelling. The projections I’ve seen have them in the 80-85 range.

Jamaica considers legalising cannabis
2nd March 2008, 4:32 WST
Jamaica is considering the legalisation of marijuana, a drug revered by members of the island’s large Rastafarian population who say smoking it is part of their religion.
A seven-member government commission has been researching possible changes to the Caribbean nation’s anti-drug laws, which some police complain are clogging courts and jails with marijuana-related cases, a government official said.
“We have discussed it, and we are preparing a report to present to the prime minister,” said Deputy Prime Minister Kenneth Baugh.
In 2003, a government commission recommended legalising marijuana in small amounts for personal use.
But lawmakers never acted, saying legalisation might entail loss of their country’s US anti-drug certification. Countries that lose it face economic sanctions.
A US State Department report on Friday said Jamaica is the largest producer of marijuana in the Caribbean and a major hub for drugs bound for the US.
Members of the Rastafarian movement, which emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s out of anger over the oppression of blacks, have long lobbied for the legalisation of the drug that they say brings them closer to the divine.
There are an estimated 700,000 Rastafarians in the world, most of them among Jamaica’s 2.6 million people.

Comment posted bysheadenizenon March 4, 2008 at 7:26 pm (#622137)
As for Pelfrey, if not this season, when?
When he proves he’s ready. We all saw him have a great ST last year. He’ll get to pitch this year. No doubt about it. Let him gain some command of his secondary pitches. Why rush him if it’s not necessary? He’ll be pitching for years to come. Why force it?
Comment posted byPHLon March 4, 2008 at 7:41 pm (#622138)
Why force it?
He’s 24. He’s not being rushed; if anything, he’s been coddled. By his own admission, he blew an entire year last year and he’s strongly motivated to produce this year. It’s his time, if ever.
Look, at some point we’re gonna have to put the ball into the hands of players that aren’t roto-worthy. We can do it now or we can do it later, when we have less flexibility, there’s more pressure, and the stakes are higher. Last year’s failure to field-test our minor-league assets before we were forced to used them ought to be the case study in poor strategic planning.
Frankly, I think slotting in Lohse and deferring these kinds of decisions is an easy way to mismanage.

The Mets announced contract signings for their players with up to three years experience. John Maine’s contract was renewed, but assistant GM John Ricco said the team is interested in discussing a long-term deal.
Also signed were: Adam Bostick, Ambiorix Burgos, Willie Collazo, Gotay, Anderson Hernandez, Ruddy Lugo, Carlos Muniz, Angel Pagan, Steven Register, Joe Smith, Brian Stokes and Jason Vargas.
All contracts were for one year.
The Mets renewed John Maine’s contract after the game: “I’m not even worried about it. It’s still good money. I’m not going to sit there and argue over $5,000. It’s still good money for me. I’ll be able to pay off my cell phone bill.”
