I think the Mets will crush the NL east this year like they were doing all year last year until that late swoon. This team has Santana and Pedro to replace Glavine and the string of bums Omar and willie trotted out when injuries happened. Im predicting 98 win for the Mets in 08 with neither Philly or Atlanta getting 90.

I’m figuring we sign another starter ie. Livan or Lohse
DM, I agree that Omar is likely to go for another “established” innings eater, and I think Livan is his man. Personally, I wish he wouldn’t. I’d like to see Pelfrey get a real chance, not wait until one of our old brittle types breaks down. Lohse has probably dropped his price from 4 years at 10 million per year, to 2 years at 8 per year (just a guess), but he kind of sucks.
AK47, I also think that Smith establishes himself as a very good relief pitcher in 08.

We are in agreement Mr. Met. I don’t see how people are making the Mets to have all of this pressure on them because of the Santana deal when the pressure to avoid the collapse of 07′ would have been greater if we went with the same squad. If anything, any pressure Santana brings within him is offset by the even greater confidence his presence and skill adds.

Just like the Mets ultimate outcome depends upon the return of Martinez and Sanchez IMHO, the Braves success will depend upon Hampton returning, Chipper’s health, and Texieria putting up monster numbers.
It looks like both the Phils and Braves will have just as many if not more questions in their bullpens as the Mets will.

I thinbk all this “pressure is on the mets” talk is simply marketing to keep the other teams fans interested and going to the ballparks. Their stadiums will be half empty when reality sets in by midseason that they cannot compete with this mets juggernaut.

I think that Omar probably wants an established innings eater in the five hole on some level but… where exactly would you put this guy?
El Duque didn’t sign on to be the long man and the other guy wouldn’t either and… all of that would put Pelfrey a bit too far away from the MLB level, too, now that he’s by far the only starting pitcher in the Mets organization anywhere near the starting rotation…
I see the five-hole as:
El Duque’s until he is injured and that’s a when not an if.
Then it’s Pelfrey’s to win or lose… and then if he flames out, it’s Sosa’s.
Adding in Lohse’s or Livan’s mediocrity would both piss off El Duque AND stunt Pelfrey and that sure isn’t worth it.

I really believe Pelfrey is going to make major strides this season. He could be a real wildcard for us in case one of the starters don’t produce as well as we hoped.

I’m definitely still in the Pelfrey camp, too. I think he’s a bit of a late bloomer but that’s at least half from being yo-yoed by the organization so much.
A year starting out with solid AAA time and then coming into a situation where he’s filling in for a wounded El Duque with a low-pressure #5 assignment… I think that’ll do wonders for the dude.
I think being the #4 man’ll help Maine out a lot, too, as 99% of his problems are about focus and if he ever gets over them, he’ll end up the equiv of a #2 starter on most teams.

I think that Omar wants to give Pelfrey time at AAA until he can dominate there. Pelfrey needs another pitch (at least one more), and shouldn´t try to develop that in the majors. It won´t be good for him if they rush him–again; better a little too long at NO than come up too soon.
