    from Baseball Musings:

“New York remains a good offense. The interesting thing is that David Wright emerges as the only offensive superstar on the team. Every one else, with the exception of Brian Schneider, puts up good numbers…If the Mets want to move up offensively, however, they need Beltran or Delgado to perform at their highest levels…That would give the team a lot more oomph behind Wright.”

Huh? “Highest level” for Beltran? Did I merely dream that he posted 33hrs and 112rbis in 2007?

Jeez, we are just hated and misunderstood out there!

A healthy Moises Alou is an offensive superstar. He is performing at a high level, but can’t stay on the field.

Jose Reyes is an offensive superstar. He just needs to be consistent for the entire year. The same can be said for DW b/c he was ice cold last April.

    Ryan Church….

no worries custer. i got my score from espn, but i still wasn’t 100% sure it was correct. now the redhawks will have the burden of being #1 and every team will be gunning for them. IIRC we still have a series with Michigan before the season ends.

    Bobby V bleeds Giant Blue!

SOME decisions are difficult. Being a Giants fan is not. You can say I was born into blue.

Andy Robustelli, the Giants New York Giants ‘ Hall of Fame defensive end, was not only a neighbor while I was growing up in Stamford, Conn., but a dear friend of my father. How dear? My father did not think himself equipped to negotiate my first professional contract after I was the fifth-overall selection in the June 1968 draft. So when long-time Dodgers GM Al Campanis came to Stamford to finalize a deal, my father had a family friend do the talking, a family friend who would ultimately become the Football Giants’ GM. That was Andy Robustelli.

Signing that contract pretty much ended my football career. As the only three-time, all-state high school player in Connecticut history while at Rippowan High, I had earned a full scholarship to Southern Cal. My baseball contract meant giving up the dream of succeeding O.J. Simpson at halfback at USC. But I still attended USC as a student and became friends with a quarterback there named Jim Fassel.

That ultimately kept my connection to the Giants strong as Jim would occasionally let me down on the field or into the post-game locker room when Jim was the Giants’ head man. I was already quite familiar with the Meadowlands. My partner in the restaurant business, Joe Romano, had given me half his season tickets beginning in 1980. I have gone to a bunch of games over the years to sit in my seats on in the mezzanine near the 20-yard line.

So, obviously, with all of this blue blood running through my veins, I have been watching the Giants recently with keen interest and great pleasure.

    Bobby V part II

It is as if I have seen a metamorphosis from one Giants team to another. It has been great to watch this evolution. To see a team come together the way they have. They epitomize team. The contributions - up and down the roster - are evident. And this is what I always have believed about a champion in any sport: They get better as the season progresses. There is no doubt this Giants team keeps getting better and better.

Can they win the Super Bowl? You bet. And I think a lot of that has to do with Eli Manning Eli Manning .

In the New England game to end the regular season, it seemed that pressures of the critics and comparisons to his brother Peyton for some reason were lifted. Maybe because there was no expectation to win, he just enjoyed the process, enjoyed the game. He was just playing. I commented to a bunch of people how I loved what I saw. I argued that this guy I was watching could win any game because he was understanding on some level that the results are to be discussed after the game, but to enjoy the time during the game. Against the Packers in the NFC title game, I actually thought Eli looked happier playing than even afterward when the result was the team was going to the Super Bowl. That was great.

I watched Eli thrive against the Cowboys in the divisional round from my restaurant, Bobby Valentine’s Sports Gallery Cafe in Stamford, and I watched him beat the Packers from my living room with my wife. But my next time watching him will be unique.

I returned to Japan on Thursday with spring training set to begin for my Chiba Lotte Marines on Feb. 1 in Okinawa. We’re making sure we can find a place that will have the game on for our Super Monday, since the game will begin 7:15 a.m. on Monday in the Far East. I am excited to watch in that forum with Japanese friends. I am excited to see the Giants play in the big game. I believe in this team.

From our favorite info site thats owned by that really famous Mathew Cerrone guy:

According to Charley Waters in the Pioneer-Press, the Twins are expected to trade Johan Santana within 10 days.

By the way, in his blog for ESPN.com, citing ‘a couple of sources,’ Buster Olney writes that the Red Sox have taken Jon Lester of the table.

According to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, “The Mets fear their front-runner status is being floated by the Twins as a way to provoke the Yanks back into more serious discussions, which in turn would re-energize the Red Sox.”

Sherman quotes an official from an opposing team who says the Mets offer has not changed since December, but that is when Phil Hughes was being offered by the Yankees and the Red Sox were giving multiple options as well.

…from what i can gather, the Twins are holding this whole process up more than any one – as they continue to flip flop between wanting a basket of prospects or a major-league center piece…

…the sense i get is that the Mets are trying to fine a way to offer one or two better prospects and some so-so major-league talent together, which may not be Minnesota’s top option, but it’s better than two draft picks…

…again, as i have been saying for so, so long: this is going to come down to santana and his agents, and how much pressure they put on the Twins…from what i can gather out of people connected to santana, he and his agents may have hinted to the Twins that a decision must be made within the next day or so…i don’t think they went as far as to set a deadline, or make any specific demands, but that may not be far behind…

Wow, I don’t know how long the Mets are going allow themselves to be used as pawns in this whole affair. It seems obvious to me that Minnesota doesn’t want our guys and is holding out for better deals from the BoSox and Yanks. I am glad that those two teams are backing off, as it makes the Twins strategy backfire in their faces.

The funny thing that I take from this whole process Ramon, is that neither the Sox or Yanks are really even interested in obtaining him. There more interested in keeping him away from the other. Both teams could probably care less if he winds up a Met. This is basically one of those rare times that using the Yanks, Sox and Mets in a trade senerio actually could backfire and it really seems like it is.

I think by doing what hes been doing, he has been. Its definately one of his best moves as a GM so far if he were to land him. Sure, people will analyze it up and down but you have to give him props that he didnt jump or panic at any time during this whole process. He couldve given up a ton early on. Believe me, you and I both know we have had GM’s in the past that wouldve blinked around mid november, given up the farm and a few major league ready guys as well and landed him by now. By standing pat he’s basically made the Twins come to him. Its a very nice move and definately great to know that we dont have a GM that can be pushed around.

  21. Comment posted by ITAC on January 27, 2008 at 1:41 pm (#596849)

Yes, I believe Omar has cooly played the market for Santana as he has done in the past with other potential GMs and free agents who wanted to fleece the team for talent or money. I am still in favor of keeping our system intact, but if the asking price for Santana goes down due to a lack of interest then Omar is a very enviable position. I just can’t believe that Boston or the Yankees would pull out at this juncture and must be playing their games as well. But we’ll see…

“Okay, Minny, here’s the deal… Mulvey, Church and a one way ticket to Budapest for when you realize Church’s ceiling is in a platoon. Not enough? Here are two players for Brooklyn whose names we do not remember.”

My dream would involve dumping Church and Schneider both in the deal and then pick Estrada back up for cheaper. This is just me. Then at least I could partially justify losing Milledge.

Giving up what Milledge was thrown away for and some good minor league pitchers for Santana and I could deal a lot better with this season.

I still say that Minnesota is mostly dealing with the Mets to try to get the Yankees to bite so as to get the Red Sox to bite.

If it backfires? Oh God, let it backfire.

    * Whether he re-signs with the Twins or hits the free agent market after the ‘08 season, Nathan isn’t playing for a discount again. He said: I think we definitely gave them a really good deal this last time around. I felt I left quite a bit of money on the table, to be honest. This time around, we expect it to be different.
    * Nathan’s agent expects the Twins to resolve the Johan Santana situation first. They reached out to the Twins and had some conversations, but it didn’t go beyond that. Now the ball is in the Twins’ court to come to Nathan and his agent. Or, Nathan could be traded anytime between now and July 31st.
    * Nathan would like to pitch for seven or eight years. As for his next deal, what do you think? Four years, $60MM?

    Wagner in his last year?

I know it is all “hot stove talk” as i’ve seen plenty of hot stove seasons before, but one of the things that has been bugging me the most about this whole Santana ordeal, is how the press continually talks about the Yankee and Red Sox young players/prospects as they’re all dipped in gold and talks about the Met prospects as they’re less than that.

How many stories do we have to read…”The Mets are struggling to put together an adequate package for Santana, while the Red Sox/Yanks refuse to offer their superior prospects”….How many prospects do the Red Sox and Yanks have that are better than F-Mart?

  30. Comment posted by Metswin2008 on January 27, 2008 at 2:13 pm (#596858)

Wood, Nathan is a local too. That would be pretty awesome. Its far fetched b/c Wags is here for awhile, I know, but he’s definately one of the top 5 closers in all of baseball. Plus, he’s like clock work against the Yanks. Every game Ive seen him in, he shuts them down 1,2,3.

Because he had a mediocre 1st season in the majors? Hughes could get figured out and suck for the rest of his tenure there. Pelfrey could get tons better. Who knows what will happen.

Its nice that we had all our best pieces signed to long term deal before the market got rediculous. Wagner, Reyes, Wright, Beltran, would cost us a bundle if they had a contract up now. Ollie is the only one coming into FA that will cost us a lot to keep. The rest are periferal players. If they dont accept Delgados option, which is 16 million after this year, and go after Texeria then hes another high dollar guy who will want a 5 year deal.

  36. Comment posted by Wdwrkr35 on January 27, 2008 at 2:28 pm (#596864)

Im not sure what kind of price Pedro will get it really depends on how he pitches this year. Another injury and he might retire. A clean year where he pitches 150ip he would probably be up for 15 mil per in a new contract which is kind of modest in this FA atmosphere. I think Pedro likes it in NY and would give us the first shopt at signing him for sure unlike Ollie with boras as his agent.

  37. Comment posted by Metswin2008 on January 27, 2008 at 2:29 pm (#596865)

Yea, i dont ever see him coming here, even if all the planets aligned and all that, lol. He is pretty darn good though, I have to give him props. That Wagner deal looks awesome right now. Plus how great do the deals of Reyes and Wright look? It was pretty smart to lock them up young.

  38. Comment posted by Metswin2008 on January 27, 2008 at 2:33 pm (#596866)

I dont think Pedro is one of those guys that wants to pitch until hes past his prime, so the great thing is, we could probably get away with a 2 year 15 mil per deal. Ollie OTOH is gonna be some bucks. Hes got the bad @ss agent, he’s young, and hes a hard throwing lefty. He will probably want 4-5 years easy.

  39. Comment posted by Metswin2008 on January 27, 2008 at 2:34 pm (#596867)

When I think about our staff I tend to completely forget about Pedro. I almost forget that he actually did pitch for us last year, since his starts came mostly during a month of baseball we’d all like to forget.

If he’s really healthy, I have to imagine that he can be pretty valuable for us. If not…

yeah this year will be big for the Mets. The rookies, Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, development if they are not traded and Pedros comeback will decide what direction we go in 2009. 2009 to 2013 will be our last window with beltran, Wright and reyes as our core. Unless of course Wilpon is ready to drop a bundle by then to resing them. I expect Wright and Reyes to get resigned as they are still young enough to be worth it.

Reyes and Beltran contracts are up in 2012
Wagner is up in 2011 option added in
    Castillo is up in 2012
    Church FA in 2011
Heilman is a FA in 2011
Maine is a FA in 2011

The smarter team are know understandign with the big money FA ask for that you have to develop from within to keep your payroll down. This is why I think the yankees are even full of chit saying they are in the santana trade. They had a 218 million payroll last year plus luxury tax penalties on 400 million is revenue. Im sure they only made 10-120 million last year for that top earning franchise. Its a business the tightwads that own the teams have profits as first priority.

NEW YORK — The Yankees did finish first in something last year — spending.

While their streak of AL East titles ended at nine, the Yankees wound up with a record payroll of $218.3 million.

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox were a distant second at $155.4 million, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner’s office. The Los Angeles Dodgers were third at $125.6 million, followed by the New York Mets ($120.9 million), Chicago Cubs ($115.9 million), Seattle ($114.4 million), Los Angeles Angels ($111 million), Philadelphia ($101.8 million), San Francisco ($101.5 million) and the Chicago White Sox ($100.2 million).

In addition to the largest payroll, the Yankees have the highest revenue in the majors. New York took in $415 million last year, giving about $100 million of it away in the sport’s revenue-sharing plan.

Some interesting stuff from John Perrotto’s column on BP (keep in mind that he’s a beat writer for a paper in the Pittsburgh area):

The New York Mets are considering reworking their trade offer to Minnesota for Johan Santana by including a major-league player, either right-hander Aaron Heilman or center fielder Ryan Church, in hopes of landing the left-handed ace …
Baltimore has interest in free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse, whose options are becoming more limited now that the Mets are close to signing Livan Hernandez as a free agent. The Orioles are also interested in left-hander Ron Villone and right-hander Steve Trachsel, who they traded to the Cubs last August … The Mets are also considering signing left-hander Odalis Perez to a minor-league contract as a free agent and inviting him to spring training … Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire says he is willing to move right fielder Michael Cuddyer to center field, but it is more likely the Twins will sign free agent Kenny Lofton to play center

If the Twins really are looking to sign Lofton, that means they’re probably more interested in Heilman than Church. I’d see what the Twins think of a Heilman/Mulvey/Gomez/Pelfrey or Humber package.

Of all the names i’ve seen mentioned in a possible Santana deal Aaron Heilman is the one name I don’t want to see dealt. A lot of good it would do to get Santana when the Mets won’t have anybody who can hold down a lead in the 6-8 innings.

For me, F-Mart and Guerra would be the 2 untouchables in the farm system, and I’d want to keep at least one of Pelfrey/Humber. If the Twins can’t find a deal they’d like under those parameters, they can go have fun watching the YankSox play chicken.

Joe Sheehan brings up an interesting point: most of the proposed Santana deals from all 3 interested teams have revolved around pitching prospects - the one thing the Twins have a ton of in their farm system. What the Twins really need are infielders. IMO, if the Red Sox really wanted Santana, they’d have put together a package centered around Jed Lowrie.

I still dont think Boston is really interested in Santana, they are bluffing to keep the yankees from getting him.

I totally agree the way all these writers talk if the Yankees or BoSox really wanted Santana, they would already have him. I’m just hoping that both teams hold firm in not wanting him.

One thing I have always admired about OM in his tenure as GM of the Mets is his patience with dealing with free agents. But with that being said, and having just read a blurb that said the Mets are holding off on Santana from making any other possible SP deals…if Santana isn’t dealt in the next ten days, it might be time to move on in preparation for the 2008 season.

I dont know about anyone else but if the Mets sign Santana I would be much more ok with signing Livan then. This would give whoever is left of the rookie pitchers time to develop in AAA.

Think we already discussed this the other day, but I actually go the other way with it Wood. If the Mets get Santana ie a 200IP a season pitcher it slots down Pedro, Maine, and Perez in the SP order, and I see no need to sign a Livan Herandez for 2-4 years and millions of dollars to be the teams 5th SP, when El Duque, Pelfrey, and Humber are all more than capable of competing for the 5th SP spot. We really won’t need a Livan Hernandez if we do in fact get Santana.

No way I sign Livan for more then 1 year. Its not like his options abound.

Livan will probably get a year and an option from some team. Consider the market.

Ben Roethlisberger recently expressed a desire for the Steelers to acquire a tall receiver, which, at least to me, doesn’t sound like an unreasonable request.

As it turns out, though, it made Hines Ward so mad that
he’s vowed to never again taste Big Ben’s Beef Jerky.

    Pause.

I’ve hardly been the one beating the “gotta trade the prospects drum” this offseason, but for Johan Santana, namely the best pitcher in MLB who is still under 30 years of age, you definitely have to do it if possible.

Who says Kazmir even makes it too free agency, and if he does, who says the Yankees in particular don’t come hard after him?

Here is the latest installment of As The LoDuca Turns.

WASHINGTON — Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca was scheduled to have surgery on his left knee Monday to repair what his agent called a minor meniscus tear.

Lo Duca will see a team doctor on Monday “for further testing,” general manager Jim Bowden wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Sunday.

“If an operation is indicated,” Bowden continued, “it will be arthroscopic and the estimated recovery time would be 4-6 weeks, with the expectation he could be ready for Opening Day.”

Washington’s pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training in Viera, Fla., on Feb. 15, which is about 2½ weeks away.

Earlier Sunday, Lo Duca’s agent, Andrew Mongelluzzi, wrote to AP: “Paul will have surgery in the morning. I am told that it is a minor meniscus tear.”

Mongelluzzi also said Lo Duca could need as many as six weeks for a full recovery.

Bowden said an MRI showed a “possible tear.”

Lo Duca, who signed a $5 million, one-year deal as a free agent this offseason, hurt himself during a workout last week and then had an MRI, the Nationals had announced on Friday.

Lo Duca hit .272 with nine homers and 54 RBIs for the Mets last season, his second in New York. Washington signed him in December, less than two weeks after trading veteran catcher Brian Schneider to the Mets.

Lo Duca, who will turn 36 in April, and Nationals manager Manny Acta were in New York together in 2006, when Acta was the Mets third-base coach.

In 10 major league seasons with the Dodgers, Marlins and Mets, Lo Duca has batted .288 with 80 homers and 466 RBIs. He was a four-time All-Star from 2003-06.

I have no idea where a scenario involving picking up Delgado’s option would not be immediate grounds for committal to an insane asylum. One of the inexpensive awful ones… with rats and stuff.
