Damn, I really wanted the Mets to sign Dotel. I’m starting to get the same eerie feeling I had at this time last year that the Mets are putting ALL their eggs in the Johan Santana basket and will be scrambling again this time if they don’t get him. That’s how we wound up with Show about this time last year.

I dunno. Do you really want to get locked into a 2 year, $10 million contract for a 34 year old reliever with a recent history of really bad arm problems? I’d rather use an untested minor leaguer with a live arm.

I’d set the over/under on total innings pitched over the duration of the contract at 50.
It looks like the White Sox are 2008’s team that’s throwing loads of money at the bullpen in response to a bad season (there’s one team every year - Orioles this past year, Cubs the year before - and it never seems to work).

As last year proved how hard quality setup men are to come by…”yes” I think it would have been a good acquisition for the Mets. The more quality arms the better.

Well, let’s see. They’ve signed a pitcher clearly on the decline (Linebrink) and another who is aging and oft-injured (Dotel). They really think that’s going to shore up the pen? Have fun, Sox fans.

But would you have liked another Mota? Because that’s what Dotel is very likely to be next season. I agree, we should stockpile bullpen arms. But we should get the cheap, talented ones. Not the “veterans” that cost a lot.

I think Wags, Heilman, and Pedro 2 are a good start. Show is a good LOOGY and might be a bit better if he managed to actually get that foot surgery done. Duaner would be key but I’m not counting on him being ready. Honestly, I think we’re just another good righty and a long reliever away from having a solid pen.
Comment posted bySuper Ton January 21, 2008 at 9:22 pm (#593580)
While I do agree that Dotel’s injury woes does make him somewhat of a risk, so does basically pinning your team’s setup hopes on a recovering Sanchez and basically the same cast of characters (minus Mota of course) as last season.
And I really hate not being able to read what I’m typing.

Definitely not seeing that comparision. Mota was picked up on the waiver wire after being released from the Indians.

Everyone keeps throwing Show’s name out as some kind of rule that paying $ for setup men will ultimately burn the signing team. I said it was a bad signing at the time. But, that doesn’t mean that we should stay away from ALL setup man that might cost us.
Dotel does have legitimate concerns of injury but comparing him to Mota is a far reach.

There isn’t so much a “market” for relief pitching as there are always a few teams who learn the wrong lesson(s) about their disappointing seasons, and feel compelled to throw money at the problem.
Save the money, pass on the non-elite relief pitchers.
