The one issue with Easley as the backup 1B is that Willie apparently plans to use him as Church’s platoon partner in RF (at least that’s what was said during the winter meetings).
Hitting .350 against who? His 9 month old son…….

Id rather have valentin play the infield utility, even 1B. Remember that clank that Easley had that led to that 5 run inning disaster with Ollie.
You’d like to give an aging first basemen a couple dozen games off. If he plays 130-135 games, we’re gonna have Easley/Anderson there for 30 games? Blech.

Yea, Easleys defense was pretty bad to say the least. Even his hitting was bad. Outside of his clutch homer vs Valverde against Arizona and that walkoff vs Colorado, he didnt do much

is 76 games easley hit 280 before he got hurt, thats pretty great off the bench

Artus at Always Amazin has brought up Wilkerson and Sean Casey as possible 1B backups/PHers.
If we go with 7 relievers, then the starters + Castro leave 4 bench slots. Endy, Easley, Marlon, & Stache/Gotay/Pagan. Am I forgetting anyone? No room for a back up 1b specialist…

Yeah, Easley can hit more than well-enough as a bench back-up.
The weird thing about the Mets is… they have a really good bench, there’s no doubt about that. Castro when he’s healthy, Endy when he’s healthy, Gotay, Easley, Marlon as strictly a pinch-hitter.
They’ve got a bench that can play all the positions and can hit quite well for back-ups.
Oh, the starting line-up is three stars and a mix of five injury-riddled-has-beens and/or never-weres but… strong bench!

So you then have Gotay backing up 3B/SS/2B, Easley backing up RF/2B/1B, Castro backing up C, Chavez backing up LF/CF if he’s healthy (God help us, Pagan if Endy’s down) and… Marlon hopefully only pinchhitting.
I mean, that’s what we’re left with/stuck with, yeah?

Well, to be fair, $200,000 of that is an “admitting you’re not a starter, you big baby” bonus and so it is probaby still up in the air. Probably doesn’t get that until the end of the year, after he has behaved all season.
After 09 hes a FA, then he can try starting again if the team he goes to wants that. I say the mets lock him up after this year and buy out his last year of arbitration.
They almost tripled his salary.

My point is… what do the Mets need more? Yet another untested unproven #5 starter or a well-above-average one-inning set-up man to get from a bunch of starters who rarely go more than six innings to Wagner?
