I’m not sure I understand what some of those snorg tees mean. (Though I understand the advertisements perfectly.) What does the “I heart the lamp” tee mean?

Aha! Thanks, Dep. This explains my ignorance. I suppose some of the other tees I don’t understand are from movies I haven’t seen.

I’m going back to picking lint out of my navel, now. Wake me up if there’s a trade or a free agent signing.

Delgado’s recent comments merited a Dugout. Not up there with the all-time greats ( that would be the classic “World Series Shuffle” and Mike Hampton as a videogame machine and of course the homages to “Rent”), but it’s still worth a laugh:

the name paradox returns. corey coles is gone. john is sad. go rutgers

Mets acquired outfielder Angel Pagan from the Cubs for outfielder Corey Coles and RHP Ryan Meyers.
Pagan returns to his original organization two years after the Mets gave him up. In 318 at-bats in the majors the last two seasons, the switch-hitter batted .255/.306/.415, which is actually a superior to his career minor league line. If he kept that up, his defense would make him a fair option as a fifth outfielder. However, he isn’t anything more than that and the Mets shouldn’t have room for him unless they decide not to carry Ruben Gotay. Fortunately, they didn’t give up anything they’re likely to miss. Coles has no chance of a career as a reserve outfielder, and Meyers is a pretty generic A-ball relief prospect.

As long as this does not mean we are trading Fernando soon, I’m fine with this otherwise weird move. Why don’t we just reacquire Mota for Schneider?

  22. Comment posted by Doc wants Isiah fired immediately on January 5, 2008 at 2:47 pm (#586485)

Pagan is Carlos Gomez/Endy Chavez insurance when Alou get hurt and if/when those guys fall flat on their faces. He might also make a decent platoon partner for Church but that would mean Endy isn’t on the team, and Willie would have a seizure of that happened.

trade makes no sense to me, giving up a pitcher with promising stats for yet another outfielder, and a decent triple A outfielder unless he means to trade Gomez and possibly FMart as well, which would not make me happy.

I don’t get this trade at all. Not even a little bit. Great, we have a mediocre righty outfielder. What can Angel do that Easley can’t?

What’s worse is that we gave him away to begin with.

Furthermore, what can Angel do that Chip Ambres can’t? There are a ton of AAAA righty outfielders that could give the same kind of production as Angel. I really think this stinks of a trade just to make a trade.

  32. Comment posted by Dave in Spain on January 5, 2008 at 6:31 pm (#586493)

Angel played in the majors last year as a backup OF. Neither of the guys we gave up would ever be a significant factor in NY (the pitcher was old for low A ball). I wouldn´t be surprised if Endy gets included in a package for Santana (if that ever happens) as a hedge against Gomez´s potential vs reality, or merely as a Twins stopgap CFer until Gomez is ready. Leaving Pagan as a 4th OF (with maybe a FA or ST release as an additional OF). Bench guys….Don´t forget that Endy is a FA in a year or so, so Omar may figure that his value is at a peak now.
Gomez, Endy, Pelfrey, Mulvey, Niese????? for Santana????? Maybe Smith too? As Gammons said the other day, if the Mets stockpile some players, it increases their options.

  33. Comment posted by Dave in Spain on January 5, 2008 at 6:43 pm (#586494)

And if a trade doesn´t happen, I´d rather have Pagan as a hedge against Alou going down than Marlon Anderson.

Pagan is a .250 career hitter with minimal power, no on base ability, and a little speed but not a whole lot of basestealing no how. How does it make sense to trade for him? I don’t really care if we’re not giving up MUCH. It’s still just a non-move.

According to LEN3, it’s down to the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets. Each team is offering four players, including a major league center fielder and three prospects.

What do you think about this? Is Gomez a Major League Center Fielder? Or are we talking about the other CF’s on the roster. Namely Beltran, Chavez, and now Pagan?

  39. Comment posted by Todd Pratt Institute on January 5, 2008 at 7:54 pm (#586498)

Why would the Twins take on Beltran’s contract if they couldn’t pay for Santana? Technically, Gomez played in the majors last year despite the fact he wasn’t ready.

  41. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on January 5, 2008 at 7:55 pm (#586499)

It can’t be Beltran. Maybe if Milledge was still around, they’d have a backup. Gomez isn’t ready to be an everyday centerfielder and Endy is not an everyday player. All I can assume is that the Mets have convinced the Twins that Endy can play everyday.

  42. Comment posted by yfern328 on January 5, 2008 at 7:56 pm (#586500)

To me, Beltran makes no sense in the deal because of his contract. The stopgap CF for the Twins could be Pagan/Chavez, and I think it’s safe to say that the ceiling is higher for Pagan since he’s younger. My bet is that Pagan and Gomez are now musts in this deal.

By the way have any of you ever heard of Yu Darvish? The guy would be sick if he came to the US after 2008. He’s really young, and can still add a lot to his frame. Last year his stats were 15-5 with 207.2 IP, 210 K, 1.82 ERA. He looks better than Dice-K.
