Daily Mets Recap
The Game
With last night’s game, the New York Mets’ thirteenth consecutive victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in the books, the Mets looked to the make the streak fourteen. But it turned out 14 was an unlucky number for the Mets, and something finally had to give.
The Mets sent rookie Mike Pelfrey to the mound, (0-3, 6.75 ERA) and the Diamondbacks countered with veteran Livan Hernandez (2-1, 3.55.) Pelfrey looked to earn his first victory of the 2007 season, and the rookie right hander had been hit hard in his last three starts. But the Mets were hopeful that Pelfrey would give the team the type of start that he had given them in his first start of the season against the Washington Nationals, a game where he had kept the Mets within striking distance. Fortunately for the Diamondbacks, D-Back-killer extraordinaire Carlos Beltran got the day off, a brief respite in the nightmares of Diamondback pitchers with memories of a shadowy #15 strolling around the bases.
But after a scoreless top half of the first, Pelfrey immediately ran into trouble in the bottom half, loading the bases after getting leadoff hitter Chris Young to pop up. Stephen Drew hit a sacrifice fly to left fielder David Newhan, scoring Conor Jackson with the game’s first run.
The score remained the same until the 4th inning when Endy Chavez led off with a double to right. Chavez advanced to the third on a David Wright groundout, and was driven in when Ramon Castro singled to center.
But in the bottom half of the inning, the Diamondbacks took back the lead. Eric Byrnes led off with a double to right, past the outstretched Ruben Gotay who slightly deflected the ball. The deflection allowed Byrnes to hustle into second base before Shawn Green could get the ball in. Carlos Quentin hit a double of his own to right field, driving in Byrnes to make the score 2-1. That was all Hernandez needed for run support as he continued to stymie the Mets hitters.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Diamondbacks tacked on an insurance run when Byrnes manufactured a run. Byrnes led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, stole second base and then advanced to third on a groundout. Pelfrey would be replaced by Pedro Feliciano and Miguel Montero greeted him with a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 3-1. That would round out the scoring for the game, as the Mets were unable to respond against Hernandez or his successors.
Brandon Lyon retired the Mets in order in the eighth, and the Mets were unable to muster a rally against Diamondback closer Jose Valverde in the ninth. In the top of the ninth Valverde struck out Ramon Castro to lead off the inning and David Newhan would walk to put hope in the heart of the Mets. But Ruben Gotay lined out to Diamondback second basemen Orlando Hudson and pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran, representing the tying run, would pop out to Montero in foul territory behind home plate to snuff out the rally and end the Mets winning streak against the Diamondbacks at 13 at Chase Field.

I am reasonably satisfied that Pelfrey is heading in the right direction, though 2 hit batsman and 4 bb’s in 5.1 innings ain’t great. He could have won though with a littel offensives support.
I am more concerned about Wright.
My crystal ball preseason predictions had Beltran missing at least 20 games with tendonitis in his knee. I am starting to worry that the crystal ball is right. Is it knee tendonitis that sat him down? I read “sore legs”.
I think it´s time to sit Wright down for a few days to clear his head. He´s clearly slumping badly, and playing thru it every day hasn´t solved the problem.
Hola Hombre with a similar time zone, one day’s rest for sure. But resting him for more, when for a few consecutive days we have Gotay and Easley or Newhan starting doesn’t sound too appealing.
From Noble on mets.com on Pelfrey and the first inning:
If he gets that righted he will be fine. You would think since Pelfrey is mostly a one-pitch guy that his problems would come when he goes through the order the second and third time. That issue is much more difficult to correct than starting the game off with too much juice on your pitches and adrenaline. So I am still encouraged.
Hola Eli-
Agreed on DW. One day, preferably before a day off. Not more, because the alternatives are not very appealing. Either that or a day far away from media committments, preferably on a beach with lots of alcohol and no thoughts of baseball. Clear out the cobwebs.
David actually had some good swings yesterday.
He looks completely different than he did a week ago, even if the results are similar.
For those who want to sit down Wright, who would play????? And Pelfrey was lucky. His ball was up again for the most part, and he showed no poise or ability to get the K when needed. He needs minor league time to refine his new pitches. Maybe if El Duque ever returns..ie
Newhan can play 3B.
So can Franco and probly Easley too.
