NLDS: Mets vs Dodgers
by: Eric Simon on Oct 1, 2006 8:00 PM | Filed under: Blog

With the Padres winning this afternoon to lock up the NL West title, the Dodgers end up the Wild Card winner and win an all expenses paid trip to Queens to take on our boys at Shea. Here’s a quick breakdown of the two teams.

Pitching

Mets NL Rank Dodgers NL Rank
---------------------------------------------------
Staff ERA 4.16 3 4.24 4
Starters ERA 4.68 8 4.30 4
Bullpen ERA 3.26 1 4.15 8
---------------------------------------------------
Staff K/9 7.15 3 6.60 10
Starter K/9 6.61 7 5.71 13
Bullpen K/9 8.05 3 8.13 2
---------------------------------------------------
Staff K/BB 2.20 6 2.17 7
Starter K/BB 1.91 9 2.06 7
Bullpen K/BB 2.78 1 2.33 4

Batting

Mets NL Rank Dodgers NL Rank
------------------------------------------
Runs 828 3 816 4
AVG .264 9 .276 1
OBP .333 8 .348 1
SLG .445 3 .433 7
SB 146 1 126 2
SB% 81% 1 73% 6

The Mets had a terrible September, which helped drag their overall numbers down closer to where the Dodgers are. The Mets seem to have an edge in pitching, though it’s not nearly as pronounced as I would have thought. Hitting-wise, I figured the Mets to have an edge, too, though the Dodgers’ squad got on base more frequently than any team in the league.

This figures to be a better matchup than many would guess given the disparity in total wins, the Mets at 97 and the Dodgers at 88. It all gets started Wednesday afternoon at 4pm at Shea, so be there or be here.

    Jon Matlack 1973 WS:

Game One (loss) at Oak: 6IP-3H-2R (none earned)-2BB-3K

Game 4 (win) at Shea: 8IP-3H-1R (again zero earned)-2BB-5K

Game 7 (loss) at Oak: 2.2IP-4H-4R-4ER-1BB-3K

Incredibly Matlack led the Mets in losses that year with a staggering 16!!

Staub started out doing well playing injured until the A’s realized if you pitch him inside he couldn’t hit it with the injury. Do remember the injury? I think it was a shoulder injury from crashing into the rf wall making a great catch.

Yep, game 4 of the NLCS vs the Reds. He hit the wall hard in the 11th inning chasing a Driessen fly ball. A very tight game which the Mets lost, 2-1.

But after missing game one of the WS, Rusty did hit .423 the rest of the WS and had 5 rbis in game 4 (he had 6 total for the series), a 6-1 Mets win. I believe his avg. led all hitters in that WS.

Game 1 Matlock got boned too, 2er and get the loss, those says pitching had a clear advantage

Correction: Staub did pitch hit in game one, but did not start.

12:46 AM - Buzz: Dodgers Will pitch Kuo in Game Two

    …posted by Matthew Cerrone…
…regardless of what you see on MLB.com, or ESPN.com, or Yahoo, the buzz out of los angeles points to Dodgers LHP Hong-Chih Kuo starting in game two of the NLDS at shea stadium, while Gred Maddux will pitch in game three…

…from what i can gather, the dodgers are confident that kuo can repeat his performance from earlier in the season at shea, while feeling quite comfortable knowing maddux will pitch at home in game three…

    ughh

Matlack gave up ZERO EARNED RUNS in games 1 and 4.

He got shelled in game 7, but really not shelled by today’s standards :)

In game two of the NLCS vs the Reds that year, he threw a complete game, 2-hit shutout (Mets shut out the Reds 5-0).

Game 1 is a must win. I want the mets to have the lead. The Dodgers are a very streaky team. We get them a loss that could set them back for a while. The mets are completely healthy right now and will have that A lineup in throughout the postseason.

I was 12 at the time and recall some of that ‘73 post-season. And I will admit I looked up everything to confirm what I thought happened that year. :)

Remember the mets usually do very well the 2nd time they see a pitcher. They will be studying the tape of the game he threw against them and his last few start to pick up on patterns.

With the way our hitting is coming around the mets should win game 1, Duque should match Lowe and then our bullpen beats thiers
