How in the world does Brooklyn have a winning record? Man, it seems like they win a few, and then just get absolutely bombed…

Oh, and apparently that whole Gibbons/Shea Hillenbrand thing wasn’t an isolated incident…

Omar on Oliver Perez, classic: “I think it was a combination of mechanical and just clearing his head. We knew when we got him it was just going to take some time. Two years ago people talked about him the way they talked about Dontrelle (Willis), the way they talked about the guy in Tampa Bay. What’s his name? (Scott) Kazmir. We felt we got a guy who potentially had some upside. We didn’t know if we could get him back, but I’m pleased by the progress.”

Heath Bell gave up a rare homer - a single pitch where he apparently lost his concentration - probably thinking that Omar and Willie see him as crap since they took Mota over him. I am not even sure that Mota could even successfully hit Piazza any more. Bell will probably be in reasonable demand this winter and get traded since Omar and Willie see him as nothing more than AAA. Bell will go on to be a very solid major league pitcher, probably not with the Mets.

By the way, someone the other day suggested that we shouldn’t hold it against Mota that he liked to plunk Piazza because so did Pedro and everyone now likes him. Don’t count me in on Pedro’s fan club. I have gained some respect for him since he has found a way to be successful without his 97 mph fastball. But I still don’t like him as a person.

Since when do we have to now like the people who wear our team’s uniforms? For years this team has had a group of villains on it from the 86 team, to Vince Coleman, to the overbearing arrogance of Bobby Valentine and Steve Phillips but know people want to complain about personal character?! Compared to guys like Keith Hernandez, Wally Backman, and Darryl Strawberry guys like Pedro Martinez and Guillermo Mota are angels. But alas, a 86′ Mets team full of degnerates was just cannonized and cheered this past weekend not because they are stand-up fellows but because they won and were a heck of a team to root for twenty years ago. Noone, and I mean noone here mentions this or if they do, they make light of the fact that this team was filled to the brim with a$$holes. Instead, I read posts about how Pedro and Guillermo are terrible people for beaning Piazza in 1998, 2002 and 2003. Puh-lease! Get off the high horse. The Piazza worshipping has to stop. It seems as if having junkies, egomaniacs, wife-beaters, and habitual offenders was OK as long as they were as good as the 86 team was according to some fans, but don’t plunk Mike Piazza! That would be like slapping Jesus in his face!

Insofar as Bell is concerned…he may be a mediocre reliever, but he is not the type of pitcher who will make the team regret his loss if he can be included in package deal to get a very good everyday player or starting pitcher.

Before this, when would he have pitched next? Will they DL him? Have they already?

have you heard? Broken down old guys win games. Go to the Bronx and see their exhibit of fossils over there and then when you are done check out another exhibit in St. Louis.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Red Sox LHP David Wells has cleared waivers, meaning he can be traded to the highest bidder…
    Omar, don’t you dare!

  11. Comment posted by Wally Dykstra on August 22, 2006 at 11:11 am (#81515)

I actually wouldn’t be horribly opposed to the Mets picking up Wells.
They could use him and El Duque as a tandem. Pitch El Duque and
Wells 3 innings each and then throw the pen. Could be effective.

  12. Comment posted by Grand Inquisitor Ramon on August 22, 2006 at 11:14 am (#81516)

In his last four games David Wells has pitched very well and had combined to pitch 7.1 innings of 2 earned runs against the Yankees and 6. 2 innings of 4 run ball against the Tigers. If he had a bullpen in Boston as good as Steve Trachsel does, he would have won both those games.

If Omar doesn’t have to give too much, I say pick him up. This way you can put el Duque in the pen or even have Wells in relief with a rotation of Pedro (who could get bombed early in games in the postseason with the way he’s pitched against the likes of Philly and Boston), Glavine, Maine, and Trachsel.

Yes. David Wells has worn out his welcome in Boston for quite some time. After yesterday’s game he was furious with the fact that the bullpen blew yet another game with its incompetance.

I say trade for David Wells! The more I think about it, the more I like having his experienced arm in the postseason. He is healthy enough now that he is just pitching his way back into the league after his injury, should be fresh, and would solidify a hell of a bullpen for the postseason with el Duque, Oliver, Bradford, Heilman, and Wagner.

Uh-Oh! Speghetti-Os! Its seems as if Philly lost a major cog in its wildcard wheel. I like Rowand and feel sorry for him, but he is too reckless out on the feild. He looks like the Lenny Dystra type that just won’t last long due to his all out style of play.

Maybe with Wakefield due to come back, the Sox would think that Wells is expendable, but they’d have to blown away with a deal….preferably bullpen help. Ring and/or Bell as part of a deal? Also, anyone know what his contract is.

I would make this deal in a NY second. Trading way a couple of never-will-be’s for a hasbeen is always a good deal. Wells is signed for this season only.

Correction. Wells was signed in 2004 to a 2 year deal. So he is at the tail end of that contract, which was mostly incentive laden to begin with anyways.

Its also evident that there has been quite the love loss between Wells and the RedSox front office.. I think the guys has been rather critical of the way things have been managed over there.

Its not Eptstein’s fault he could not take on Abreu’s bloated contract for next season like the Yankees did. I think you can get on Epstein for not upgrading the bullpen or for trading Arroyo for Willie Mo Pena…but you can’t get on the guy for not making a deal that only the Yankees are rich and crazy enough to pull off.

What I see for the playoffs if there are no more moves:

    Pedro
    Glavine
    Trachsel
    Maine

    Wagner
    Heilman
    Bradford
    Feliciano
    Hernandez
    Oliver
    Mota/Bell/Ring/Bannister/Williams

I’m not sure they will even carry a 12th pitcher, but if they do, they have plenty of options. I don’t think Wells is much of an upgrade over any of those guys.

Reasons for why the Mets need proven veteren pitchers are:

1.) Pedro’s recent outings against Boston, Atlanta and Philadelphia all signify that the man is gettin torrched by the best offenses in the league.

2.) With el Duque, Wells could form a killer tandem in the pen to provide excellent long relief for aseveral starters like Pedro, Glavine, and Trachsel who may only go 5 + innings at best.

3.) Wells has proven he can still pitch with the best of them. He pitched very nicely against the Tigers and the Yankees.

4.) He has loads of playoff experience as a proven winner who performs under pressure.

Wells is an upgrade over several of these guys in a playoff environment!

    Pedro
    Glavine
    Trachsel
    Maine

    Wagner
    Heilman
    Bradford
    Feliciano
    Hernandez
    Oliver
    Mota/Bell/Ring/Bannister/Williams

I’m not sure they will even carry a 12th pitcher, but if they do, they have plenty of options. I don’t think Wells is much of an upgrade over any of those guys.

In Wells we have a guy who can start or be in the pen. Are you telling me that Williams, Bannister or eveb Steve Trachsel is better than this guy? Hell no!

1)The Pedro starts you picked he was hurt, coming off an injury and had a bid first and then was lights out, and then he was hurting again. When healthy Pedro can get anyone out, you can question his health not ability.

    2) With David Wells history of back issues I don’t see him being able to pitch out of the bullpen, but who knows.

Pedro is ALWAYS hurt these days with his toe, hip, calf, and only god knows what else. I can definately see him warming up one game and saying that he doesn’t have that day. Then what? I personally like having a David Wells on the team for such a case.

I can see him pitching in a variety of spots for the club. If he were on our rotation I would say that he is at
he is at least our 4th best pitcher before Hernandez and Trachsel.

Since when do we have to now like the people who wear our team’s uniforms?

I for one prefer to lose with nice guys than win with a**holes.

Insofar as Bell is concerned…he may be a mediocre reliever, but he is not the type of pitcher who will make the team regret his loss if he can be included in package deal to get a very good everyday player or starting pitcher.

this may be true, but I much prefer to see him pitching for the Mets than G. Mota.

Does anyone know who the Mets are offering for Green?

This is a very different argument than you original one which basically painted a picture of an ineffective Pedro. If Pedro goes down it doesn’t matter who is in the pen we would be screwed.

Wells has always been a starter and has had chronic back problems that he has to work with I can’t see him learning to come out of the bullpen now so he is only a starter and could also come up lame with back issues like he did for the Yanks in 03. If Glavine is healthy I much rather see El Duque pitch and Maine to get the kid some experience also.

LoDuca was just on the FAN and said that a lot of the team really liked the throwback unis and asked if they could keep wearing them. MLB has a rule that you have to ask 1 year in advance for permission to wear throwbacks so they can’t.
It’s sure a good thing that MLB has rules on such important issues like throwbacks, but a team can give another team 2 scrubs for an all star outfielder and a major league pitcher as long as they can afford the $40M that goes with it….and that’s fine. I guess MLB has to have priorities!

I think the two are interrelated. Pedro is the walking wounded and there is no guarantee that he will be heathy when he comes back. Pedro has been ineffective because he is working with damaged goods and I don’t thonk he will get healthy with a 15 day stint on the DL and then be expected to come back and be plaoff ready. Because Pedro is a fighter he will do a good job…but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has another meltdown come October agains a teamm like the Cardinals and Dodgers for these reasons.

As far as Wells in concerned, he could be a guy who would be a heck of long reliver if this team needs for a spot. He is worth the gamble with the injuries on our staff.

  43. Comment posted by Joe A. on August 22, 2006 at 1:54 pm (#81546)

I have faith in Oliver and El Duque as long relievers in the post season. Wells is ok, but I don’t see the need. Of course, if the Mets could land an impact starter or reliever, then great, but I just don’t think Wells si that guy anymore.

  44. Comment posted by sweetlew on August 22, 2006 at 2:23 pm (#81547)

Guys…get over the arguing…Wells IS NOT coming to us, the last thing we needs is another pitcher with a bad health track record!

Pedro will be fine for the post season…he is a gamer and has gotten enough rest to ensure he is strong for the post season.

Don’t look now, but Trax has actually turned a pretty solid corner…he gave up a few runs in his last start, but his periphial numbers have improved drastically in August, his K-Rate is much, much better.

Factor in the cold fall weather when balls don’t fly as well, and he might give us some pretty solid post season starts.

I can’t argue that it is possible that Pedro will come up hurt in a playoff game but I have in him to work through. I also remember that some shotty defense burned him in his start in Philly.

As far as Wells goes you still are missing the fact that he has always been a starter and has chronic back injuries, so you cannot assume that being a reliever is even an option for him at this point even if you think he would be good at it.

    Oh…on Niese…

I wouldn’t worry too much about his performances at this time, there was an article on Scout.com about him starting to battle some arm-weariness. He has thrown about 120 innings this year, so they are capping his pitch count and keeping him on a short leash.

As stated a few days ago, we don’t need 18 year old kids throwing 250 innings and destroying their arms.

SweetLew, You are right, I don’t think we need Wells. The more pertinent question, now that Trachsel has pitched better of late is: If the playoffs start tomorrow and Pedro and Glavine are healthy, who is in our rotation and in what order. I still say Pedro Glavine El Duque Maine with Trachs on the roster for some long relief or injury insurance. I still don’t trust Trachsel against better offenses. If he continues to pich well over the next month though, I am not sure what we do. Putting Duque in the pen is tough, considering his stellar postseason pedigree and his proven ability to pitch well in big games this year.

The Post is reporting Glavine does NOT need surgery. Medication will treat him. Should be back next week.

I knew this was going to be the case. My leg swelled up to twice its normal size when i had my blood clot and blood thinners had it back to normal in days. Coumadin is a powerful blood thinner and will dissolve the tiny blood clots Glavine has.

Persoanlly, if not for his injury history, I would take him. But he could be a pitch away from a bad knee or his back going out again. The knee has been a problem this season. With Pedro being a concern, the last thing the team needs is Wells, who is a question mark.

It really depends on how much patency the lumen has (which was why they did the angiography) and the symptoms (which Glavine reported). If it’s mostly blocked off, then anticoagulation won’t do the trick - you have to do a thrombectomy (surgery). Coumadin is powerful stuff, they have to check you INR serially. And this clot could be a recurrent problem, we’ll have to wait and see.
