    My man!!!!

Guys I watched pelfrey pitch yesterday and he was pretty blah. Sure his fastball looked great, even though one of his fastballs
got deposited in the RF stands. He still has no control over his offspeed stuff and he’s not even close. His pitches were missing
a good foot+ off the plate, not baiting anyone to swing.

Wow. I can’t believe how good Deolis Guerra is. He has FAR exceeded my expectations. And he keeps getting better. Like F-Mart (better than Tabata!), will his performance merit a late-season callup, just to give him a little taste.

Dustin Martin keeps raking at Brooklyn. I will keep watching.

Tobi Stoner continues to make Dep a proud papa…

Danny, I posted a link in the other thread to baseball prospectus’s future shock 10-pack.

    F-Mart on the list.

No sign of Tabatas(is it Tabata or Tabatas?, not that i really care to pronounce a yankee right).

Just the way we like it! :)

    very nice to see.

I am trying not to get too excited about Gomez. He is an even better athlete than Milledge, if you can believe it. A poster made a fantastic point a few days ago (I think it was Gabe, to try and give credit), I had asked why Gomez gets off to horrible starts and why he always waits so long to heat up. The poster mentioned that since Gomez is being moved so quickly, it takes him some time to adjust to his new league. That makes complete sense. And it makes me EVEN more excited about him. Because once he figures the league and the pitching out… WOW.

  12. Comment posted by Danny on August 7, 2006 at 3:03 pm (#71131)

Nevermind, I can’t contain my excitement. I started off that post saying I didn’t want to get too excited about Gomez, and then finished the post talking about how excited I am about him.

    I surrender.

Yea I read that post…it did make sense, that it takes Gomez time to settle into his league.

Its hard not to get excited.

I have a funny feeling that Gomez > Milledge.

This year he had a back problem that eventually put him on the DL. Since coming back he’s been on fire.

Consider this, at the start of the year the Tides starting rotation was LimaTime, ScobieDoo, Ikiri, Gonzolez and Maine, Next year the Tides’ starter will probably be two or three of the following, Maine, Pelfrey, Bannister, O Perez, and Soler (depending on a trade or possible free agent signing-Zito, Oswalt, Schmidt, etc.) along with MacLane and Devaney, with Humber possibly in the mix. I would call that a major upgrade, better and younger.

If power is really the last tool to develop, I’d say F-Mart is a wee bit ahead of schedule. Wonder who was the last 17 yr-old hitting bombs in the FSL?

Speaking of 17 yr-olds, wondering whether Deolis Guerra begins next season at St. Lucie or Binghamton.

According to Baseball America’s 2006 Prospect Handbook, Guerra:

“already sits at 90 mph and touches 92 with his fastball, which he throws on a nice downhill plane. He also has an advanced feel for his changeup and a developing power curveball. … The Mets believe Guerra already possesses two plus pitches.”

And remember he’s only 17 and is like 6-5, 200 pounds — he’s still growing!

The link below has a nice blurb on all the top mets pitching prospects including some ppl may never have heard of….

Deolis Guerra – Guerra was one of top 2 International prospects secured by the Mets last year. The Mets inked the 16 year old Guerra in July 2005 for $700,000, and he made his professional debut with Hagerstown on May 6, 2006. OnDeck ranks Guerra as the eighth Mets prospect. His pitches include a 91-92 mph fastball, and a developing change-up. It’s hard to judge a 17 year old playing organized ball, but Hagerstown has purposely limited Guerra’s pitches so far this season. He is 3-3 with a respectable 2.48 ERA.

Nice he already hits 90 mph that means he could still gain about 5 mph as he matures. I like that he already has the feel for the changeup. Do you guys think he might be able to pitch for the mets when he is 21 or 22 years old??

  33. Comment posted by Rich on August 7, 2006 at 5:33 pm (#71194)

Dpty, awsome find on that link. Good to know we have quite a few more pitching prospects down in the minors. Niese is a personal favorite of mine just cause he is lefthanded and seems to have a lot of potential.

Do you guys think he might be able to pitch for the mets when he is 21 or 22 years old??

If he continues to dominate low A-ball this season, he likely begins next season at St. Lucie (high A), with the idea being to keep him there half a season (again, assuming he pitches well) and see him at AA Binghamton the second half, or final third of ‘07 - when he’ll still be 18.

If he’s really this good - and his straightline upward progress this year indicates he may be - he’ll get a taste of Spring Training in ‘08 at 19 yrs, and would likely be available for some big leage time before the end of that season, but very definitely by ‘09, at 20 yrs old.

Being a pitcher, of course, means that anything can happen between now and then, but if we all close our eyes and think good thoughts together… (-:

  36. Comment posted by Gabe on August 7, 2006 at 6:26 pm (#71221)

Thanks for the props, Danny, yep it was me. :) I agree that this productivity from him is VERY exciting! It’s interesting that not even most Mets articles mention Gomez as a top prospect, let alone nation-wide breakdowns. Perhaps that will change after this year…his tools certainly seem to merit it. Don’t think that his development along with F-Mart’s weren’t factors in Omar’s willingness to deal Nady…

Let’s not get nuts yet, though; both Martinez & Gomez clearly have monster tools, but remember that Milledge just turned 21 himself, and has already shown some great abilities at the pro level. He’s clearly in the lead, but the fact there we have TWO OF prospects with tools in Lastings’ world should make us all giddy…

  37. Comment posted by Rich on August 7, 2006 at 6:32 pm (#71223)

ajsmith I think you are trying to push him too hard. What is the rush to have him just pitch a full season in all of those stops? If they do that he will be in the majors at 21. No need to rush him.

  38. Comment posted by ajsmith on August 7, 2006 at 6:35 pm (#71228)

Given Gomez’ development, I’m thinking it not out of the question that we re-sign Cliffie to a 2-year deal, with Gomez getting ready in AAA to come up the first time Cliff hurts himself, and the idea being that by the second year of his deal, Cliffie is primarily the lefthanded bat off the bench with an OF of Gomez, Beltran, Milledge.

That would certainly leave a lot of money to sign a pitcher or two this offseason.

    Just thinking out loud here.

  39. Comment posted by WrightHOF on August 7, 2006 at 7:01 pm (#71245)

I’m thinking we give Endy Chavez a chance next year or maybe he’s earned 2 years, because that’ll save even more money, and Chavez has just been MONEY this year.

  40. Comment posted by ajsmith on August 7, 2006 at 7:15 pm (#71256)

I wouldn’t have a problem going with Endy in left next year, though it does leave our corner outfielders without a lot of power. If we can improve the starting rotation though, I think it could work. They would certainly cover a lot of ground out there.

  41. Comment posted by Drew on August 7, 2006 at 7:20 pm (#71268)

No way we re-sign Floyd. He’s injured and old. We would have re-signed Piazza if this was our
agenda. Milledge will be there (unless he’s traded in a package for a front line starter), along with either signing Soriano or Lee, or trading
for some other power-hitting corner outfielder.

I don’t think that Endy Chavez is an everyday player. At best, he is a Platoon player. There are some holes in his offensive game which would prevent him from being an everyday player. He is a guy that, while with washington/montreal, showed flashes of being a good ballplayer offensively. The thing that always held him up was his slow, uppercut swing, which does not benifit him due to his size. With that being said, he has done awesome for us this year. His swing hasn’t been allowed to get slower from being tired due to the amount of playing time he has gotten. He needs rest every few days when he is one of the primary outfielders just like in needs to play every few days when he is coming of the bench.

Alot of people championed for Ramon Castro to be the starting catcher for the Mets in the offseason here @ Metsgeek. He is another guy who is real solid but he just isn’t an everyday player.

  45. Comment posted by Ellis Dee on August 7, 2006 at 7:58 pm (#71313)

Agree, chris, that Endy is probably best coming off the bench. Although he swings a heavy bat. If he starts he should go to a lighter bat.

I wonder if Cliff would be willing to sign a one year deal with the Mets. That would buy enough time for Gomez to be ready. Or maybe they package either Milledge or Gomez for another OF.

  46. Comment posted by WrightHOF on August 7, 2006 at 8:34 pm (#71361)

I sure hope they do not trade either Milledge or Gomez away, unless they get a Miguel Cabrera type player, in both talent and age. If they get Manny, say, well he’s a great player, but that won’t matter in a couple years when he gets too old.

However, it’s starting to look like Victor Diaz, everyone’s favorite 2B turned RF, is very expendable. Wouldn’t mind trying to at least see what you could get for him, because under the present plan, unless he goes back to second, he has no place in the lineup.

Because everyone wants a guy a guy batting .219 with a .607 ops in triple A. Victor Diaz has less value than ham Sandiwich’s redheaded step chiid the Peunut butter and Banana sandwich.

It’s very possible that Victor Diaz has totally given up with the Mets and needs a change of scenery. The one thing Diaz has always been able to do is hit minor league pitching. What he needs is to realize that his poor performance handicaps his chances of catching on with another organization and possibly make it to the majors.

I don’t want to see Guerra rushed. I’ve seen too many pitchers arrive at the major league level at 19 or 20 with over-powering stuff (Gooden, Don Gullet, etc) and physically breakdown early in their career for one reason or another.

I love Uncle Cliffy but unless he signs real cheap and is willing to be a part time player I wouldn’t resign him. Constant injury problems throughout his career and now with a chronic Achilles problem seem to have taken its toll on him.

I agree with the general consensus that Endy should be signed but Omar may have to overpay to keep him. A lot of times a guy like him think they are an everyday player tells his agent to find him a team that promises to start him. Some nice Omardollars would probable calm him down. He is a very interesting player, great outfield speed and big gun arm for a little guy. He will win at least one post season game for us with an opposite field slap down the line.

Guerra has a similar repitoire as young guns like King Felix and Liriano. Two or three good pitches and good velocity and pitchers builds. Guerra and F-Mart at this point make Pelfrey and Milledge look like Victor Diaz and Evan MacLanhe.
