Reminder: Geeks in the Bleachers Night
by: Matt Gelb on Aug 5, 2006 9:40 PM | Filed under: Articles

Metsgeek.com will hold its first annual Geeks in the Bleachers Night on Wednesday, August 9 when the Mets host the Padres at Shea. Game time is 7:10.

The event, if you can call it as such, is a chance for everyone who visits the site, whether writer, commentor, or quiet lurker, to meet and greet over some first-place baseball and a few cold ones.** Plus, you have the chance to participate in the Mike Piazza Farewell Tour (Version 2.0 - For Real This Time!)

As the site has grown, we feel a real community has developed. We’re at the point where some of these personalities need to show their faces. We would like to payback our faithful, too.

No, we’re not paying for your tickets. Moochers.

Here’s the deal: We are still unsure how the seating will work, but the purpose of this announcement is to find out how much interest there is. The Mets, the cheapskates they are, ended the empty Pepsi can for a free bleacher seat Wednesday night promotion, so instead, we will flock to a section in the Upper Reserved.

Obviously, tickets will not be expensive. It’s a “silver” game, which means Upper Reserved seats are $16 each.

Everyone’s invited for a fun night of watching baseball with some die-hard Internet writers. Keeping score is not a requirement, but always a bonus. No laptops allowed. Memorize your batting splits.

We’ll meet up next to the Day of Game Ticket Sales booth on the right field side (near the subway ramp) starting at 5:30. Once we’ve got most of the people who RSVP’ed, everyone will buy tickets in the same section and away we go.

At the very least, Jeremy, Alex, Mike and I will be there. Eric is going to Hawaii on his honeymoon instead of hanging out with us. Some fan. Andrew is somewhere in the Milwaukee metropolitian area. There may or may not be cardboard likenesses of both present.

Free Heath Bell signs are still welcomed.

**Note, Mets Geek is not a supporter of underage drinking, nor drunk driving. Like Mr. Met says, “Take the subway to the game!”

Eric almost wasn’t alone; my wedding is the 6th, but I don’t leave for my honeymoon until the 14th. As such, I’d love to go and meet y’all.

I said we’ll be there starting at 5:30. We won’t buy tickets or go in until after 6:00 I would think. I know people have a tough time getting there early.

Eric is going to Hawaii on his honeymoon instead of hanging out with us.

You know, Eric, I’d reconsider. I don’t think anything will better prepare the lucky lady for a lifetime of playing second fiddle to the Mets, than to skip the honeymoon to watch a game with a bunch of guys you’ve never met in person.

Now I have a legitimate conflict that night, presenting a true ethical conundrum: long standing plans to dine on steak with a couple buds at one of NY’s finer purveyors of dead cow. What to do?

I have just discoverd this website. I am a lone MetFan surrounded by Yankee and Cardinal fans. It could be fun to be at a game and sit with people actually cheering for the Home team with me. I will not know any of you guys, but what the hell, I might make the trip.

I feel this may lead to my being kicked out of MetGeekdom, but I have to ‘fess up: of the “two buds” in question . . . one doesn’t like baseball & the other’s a Yankee fan.

    Hahaha…so true. And so awesome.

I really wish there was a way to make this…but living in Chicago, it’d be kinda tough to get out there.

Maybe next summer, during which I plan to make a trip back to NY for a while.

I wish I could make it but I already spent a bunch of my hard earned money on an Atlanta trip next week with my buddy who is a big Braves fan to watch all three of the Mets vs. Braves series. It will be priceless to see the look on his face after game 3 when the Mets are about 17 games up.

As I reside in Stockholm, Sweden, I might have a hard time to attend. My reading/posting quota is 10000-1 anyway so noone of you domestic geeks know about me anyway.

However - time for some bragging. Checking out the stats that really matters, the site meter visitor data for metsgeek.com, I am honoured to see that my visits put Sweden on the map with over 1 % of the hits. Or is there another Royal Swedish Metropolitan out there?

wow id love to but air tickets from taiwan where i currently live are pricey. i will have to stay here and continue to pretend to worship chien-ming wang or be punished.

since this is a geeky site, i will mention something geeky. I noticed many mets fan sites are starting to have “blogsite” at shea nights. Now the ‘Geek is having its first annual, and my thoughts turn to the evolution of webbased communities. I am pondering over whether meeting all these wonderful metsfans thus giving up anonymity has any future ramifications. Wouldn’t it be strange if you show up and are greeted by 40 some-odd 12 year old girls? (no offense to said girls who are fans) Or if it turns out all of us are in different state prisons and we are all just bluffing and no one can show up? Or we are all just figments of Emad’s imagination? What if there are disagreements amongst us? will we flame each other in person? Are moneyballers heads really triangular as i have been told? So many questions…its a goshdarn Pandora’s Box i tell ya!
    But have fun anyway.

  49. Comment posted by Grand Inquisitor Ramon on August 5, 2006 at 9:56 pm (#69913)

I’m sorry, I was just coming on to see if there was a minor league report, but I have to get this off my chest because I am so tired of the hero worship that surrounds Mike Piazza.

First off, Piazza was a great player and he was worth the major team investment even if he didn’t play up to his contract in the last 2.5 years of his tenure here. But the man was not a product of our farm system he was a hired merc who did his job well (as a slugger and hitter) and did little else. He was neither a leader on this team, initially refused to move over the first base when the team needed him too, and sulked his way out of this clubhouse in his last season in 05 when the team was shifting its management philosophy and internal power structure after his washed up buddies like John Franco and Al Leiter were through running the place like it was their team.

I am so tired of Mets fans making him out to be so great when he was such a one-dimensional player. I am glad he is gone and would rather have a team leader like LoDuca on this team even though he is putting up very nice offensive numbers this year.

FUCK Mike Piazza! Get over him. He seems to have gotten the Mets.

In response to Grand Inquisitor Ramon’s comments regarding Paul LoDuca (#43), I wholeheartedky agree. For those of you old enough to remember, LoDuca brings a Jerry Grote-like attitude to this team, although no one could be as surly as Jerry.

  52. Comment posted by Andrew Hintz on August 5, 2006 at 10:47 pm (#69935)

    So y’all should be excited!

  53. Comment posted by Rich on August 5, 2006 at 10:59 pm (#69945)

Grand Inquisitor Ramon, how could you say that about Piazza. The guy does not need to come out of our farm system to be loved. The guy might not have been an in your face leader but he was a leader on that team. If he did not sign here, Robin Ventura would not have come here that off season. Players joined the Mets cause Piazza was here no Mike we have no 99 and 2000 playoffs. He lived in NY during the season he became a New Yorker by doing so. He tried to go to 1b but when you find out from the MEDIA that you are going to be doing that instead of a sit down letting him know that could be the best for the team I understand why he was mad, but he tried, he wasnt an athlete, he was a guy who could hit .320 and hit 40hrs and drive in `120 as a catcher. Also he called a good game, blocked pitches in the dirt well. He had a very bad arm but all the pitchers liked the game he called. So do not bash Piazza cause he wasnt an in your face guy realize that he saved this franchise when we were on a down period.

I’d love to be there but I can’t take off work. I could try to leave immediately afterwards but, coming from Philly, I probably wouldn’t get to Shea until somewhere around 8:00 and THEN I’d have to get back home. But, anyway, have fun guys.

It’s funny, after my semi-serious comments earlier about “priorities,” but . . .

. . . I can’t attend this game even though the evening of dining on cow will occur one week later. Why? Because despite forgetting to mention it earlier, August 9 is my anniversary! If I dragged one Yankee fan & one non-fan to the Met game, I suspect both of them, as well as my fellow Met Geeks would forgive me.

Afterall, we’re men. And men+beer=forgiveness for all (or at least most) sins.

But forget my anniversary (or remember but go to the game anyway)? Not so sure my wife would be busting out the bag o’ forgiveness for that one.

So, fellow Met Geeks: beef on August 16, home alone with the lady on the 9th (here’s to my getting lucky, though after 7 years not sure if gettin some or gettin none qualifies as “lucky”).

And the Mets every other night. Whattaya gonna do?
