Mike Carp is, in the famous words of Freddie Prinze, “looking good”! The guy is raking pure and simple. I wonder if this guy will start making Delgado alot more of an expendable commodity in the final year of his contract?

I don’t know if Micheal or Eric are reading, but I was wondering…

how if the kid’s D? Is he a clogger on the basepaths. What is his OBP? Is he a leader type or more of an introverted fella…

I see Kevin Deaton pitched for the GCL Mets last night. Does anyone know what had happened to him
? I hadn’t seen his name in quite a while.

  4. Comment posted by Ramon on August 2, 2006 at 10:07 am (#66870)

Forget about the OBP…I found it. He has an OBP that almost a hundred points higher than his BA. Not bad at all.

His slugging percentage could be a bit higher, but I’m not complaining.

  5. Comment posted by Ramon on August 2, 2006 at 10:13 am (#66872)

I like his offensive numbers with men in scoring position, men on base, and in close and late game situations. He blows away the rest of the league in these categories.

By the stats I read, I can see that he hasn’t even begun to fill his 6-2 frame. He is listed at about 205 lbs and judging by his frame, one can see that he still has that gawky teenager look at some 19-20 year olds haven’t yet grown out of. Its not to unreasonable at all to believe the kid could fill up about 15-20 lbs of muscle to 220-225 lbs in the next-4 years.

Carp is “looking good”. Thanks for the add’l info Ramon, good stuff :) Its nice to have a cornerman with some power in our system.

You know who else is looking good? My boy Tobi Stoner. He’s got some fine numbers at Brooklyn so far.

Can Chase Lambin play 2nd base at all? I seem to remember him being a short stopin the past. His numbers seem strong and he has no shot of playing third base in the future for the Mets. Perhaps he can crack the mets as a second baseman.

How about your boy Stoner Dep?

Carp is really coming on. He’s left Nick Evans in the dust at this point. I had them about even, but Carp is far ahead of Mr. Evans at this point.

Ramon, I wouldn’t worry too much about the power with Carp. Not only does he still have come filling out to do, as you mentioned, but he also plays in a pretty extreme pitcher’s park, if I am not mistaken. Carp’s performance is EXTREMELY encouraging.

Good to see Giarraputo have a good game for the GCL Mets. I am discouraged by Stegall’s stats. I had high opes for him, as he is a terrific athlete.

I think Binghamton has won like 12 in a row now…

People just want to complain and blame someone for the loss. Wagner made a mistake and the hitter made him pay for it. Sometimes pitchers make mistakes and don’t get hammered (like he did with Willingham), sometimes they make nasty pitches and they get hammered as (like he did with Olivo). As long he didn’t force a hitter’s count or walk runners, I am happy not to make rediculous Looper and Benitez comparisons.

Well, the thing with Carp is that his SLG and OPS is actually higher at home than it is one the road. So, I don’t know what kind of the effect the park is having on his power. Maybe he would hit a little better there, but his road numbers should be a bit higher if the park were really a factor.

As far as his frame is concerned. I think that he does have a ways of filling out to go based on pictures I’ve seen of him and physical stats I’ve read. Does anyone remember how really skinny Reyes used to be? He has filled out a little bit to look less wirey and far more sturdy and sinewy. Heck, look at pictures of Beltran when he was wearing an Astros uniform and you will see that he got thicker in the past year and half.

At 6′2″ I would love to see Carp at about 225 when he 25 years old. Another slugging first baseman for the Cardinals is listed as having these same height and weight numbers at the age of 26.

Yea my boy Stoner is looking good. I hope he keeps it up when he gets outta BK.

So a quick question, if Stoner’s BAA is .200 but his BABIP is .250 does that mean he’s been lucky or unlucky?

haha…check out this little profile on Stoner, please note his career batting average.

Elkins, WV – Senior pitcher Tobi Stoner has been selected on the first day of the Major League Baseball draft. Stoner, who was the New York Mets 16th round selection, is now the second Davis & Elkins baseball player to be taken so early in the draft in the history of the program.

Stoner, a right handed pitcher, from Oakland, MD had a stellar senior season for the Senators which helped him garnish the Male Athlete of the Year Award given out by the Davis & Elkins Athletic Department and second team all-WVIAC honors. For the year, Stoner amassed a 2.90 earned run average and an 8-6 record. Starting his career at Garrett Community College in Maryland, Stoner’s two year Senator career stats are impressive. Recording a 15-9 career record with 6 saves and a 2.68 ERA, Stoner was a force on the mound and at the plate tallying a .420 career batting average with 8 home runs and 30 RBI’s.

“Tobi has had an outstanding career for the Senators and this certainly tops it off!” stated Head Coach Ryan Brisbin. “There was little doubt in my mind that Tobi could pitch at the next level. He is a tremendous athlete with a lot of heart and desire.”

Stoner will start his professional career with the New York Mets short-season affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York/Penn League in Single A. The Davis & Elkins athletic department, Senator baseball and Coach Brisbin would like to congratulate Tobi and wish him well as he starts his professional baseball career

This guy has to make it to the show so he can my favorite player…he just has to!

To fill the void for Humber at St. Lucie who gets the call up Guerra or Niese?

  21. Comment posted by Michael Oliver on August 2, 2006 at 11:11 am (#66894)

Carp has gotten hit about 20 times, his OBP% is a bit misleading, but he takes enough at a young age. So that is nice.

BA says he is average at first and a slow runner.

Danny, don’t worry about Stegall’s performance just yet. It’s early. These guys just came out of high school and moved down to Florida to play ball with guys they don’t even know. It must be nuts for them.

I’m more dissapointed with Greg Cain at Kingsport who is another great athlete doing nothing in his 2nd year.

Give Wags a break. He blew a few (games…not guys) early on and has been pretty much lights out. His BAA is under .200! Too many big hits and homers, but he’s been pretty damn good with the exception of May. Under a 2.00 ERA in every month but one.

To fill the void for Humber at St. Lucie who gets the call up Guerra or Niese?

They both stay. Niese walks too many to not be on the one level a year program and hasn’t dominated, though he’s shown flashed of dominating.

Guerra has dominated, but conventional wisdom tells me keep him where he is. HE JUST TURNED 17! It blows my mind. Him and F-Mart should stay. If they both played full seasons to this point, it would be one thing. Also, with so many guys in front of Guerra and Niese, there is no need to rush them. After three years a piece after this year (one at St. Lucie, one at Bing, and one at Norfolk), Guerra will be 20 and Niesee will be 22 after completing all levels if all goes well. Not many guys can hold their own that early. I tend to think pitchers should be rushed less (unless they went to college) than hitter for obvious reasons.

I’ve just returned to England after 2 weeks vacation in Florida and managed to fit in 4 St. Lucie games whilst there. Mike Carp looks to have a better than average glove at 1st whilst his foot-speed is nothing to get excited about although he’s also not so slow as to clog up the bases either. He only hit 1 HR in the games that I saw and that was to the opposite field at Lakeland. He looks to have a nice stroke with pop and doesn’t strike out too much. He always seems to warm up with Corey Coles before games and they have a little routine going (at Tradition Field anyway) where Carp stays just on the leftfield side of 3rd base just in foul territory and Coles gradually moves back from a shortstop position and then behind 2nd and eventually out to the warning track in right-center. A very long distance game of catch! As a ‘party trick’ Carp will occasionally uncork one that flies beyond Coles and over the fence. I’d say he has a much better than average arm for a 1B.

Milledge got hit a lot last year at St. Lucie and then made more progress this year in plate discipline. I know Mike Carp is not Lastings Milledge, but its something to be aware of

Can Chase Lambin play 2nd base at all? I seem to remember him being a short stopin the past. His numbers seem strong and he has no shot of playing third base in the future for the Mets. Perhaps he can crack the mets as a second baseman.

Lambin can play second base, but he has had a terrible year at the plate this year. If he has any future in the majors (and I think he does) it is as a utility infielder.

Great to see Humber promoted to AA. The guy seems to be exceeding all expectations in his recovery… velocity, control, and rising pitch count all there. I’m excited to see how he fares against better competition.

If he continues to dominate at the next level, I’m guessing we get a peek at the kid in Spring Training, and a potential call-up during next season.

It was also good to see Bannister’s latest rehab effort.

Humber, Pelfrey, Bannister, Maine. Is it too much to hope that three of those four pan out?

Humber is the only one we havent seen be successful (to some extent) at the ML level.

Believe it. Get him regular work in the bigs, he might be OK. I still have faith in the big guy.

ya know, the problem is in the past with regular work he hasnt been ok. His main problem, as far as i can tell, is that sometimes he can blow it by hitters, but when he doesnt, his stuff is VERY hittable. Not enough movement on his fastball and his other pitchers arent effective enough to offset the straight heat. I think he could be servicible in the majors if you never bring him in with runners on. He usually seems okay getting out of his own trouble, but he can’t handle other people’s trouble. Inherited runners always seem to score off him. The problem is, I do not trust Willie to not use him in those situations.

(ive actually been to at least two games this season where the game was very close and he was brought in with runners on and blew the game wide open)

As for Humber, I’m going up to Binghamton in a couple weeks to see the B-Mets, so i’m trying to set it up so i see Humber pitch. His first start is this Friday, so assuming they go with a 5-man rotation, he should start on thurs aug. 10th and tuesday aug. 15th (theres a couple offdays and a doubleheader stuck in there)

speaking of minor leagues pitching - i was just thinking about this - bannister has one start left in st. lucie then he goes up to AAA. Oliver will pitch in front of Willie and Peterson today then be sent down to AAA and Pelfrey most likely will be sent down to AAA soon (unless they put him back in AA?) how do they make room for all of them? Even if McGinley becomes permanently bullpen you still have Collazo, Lima, Iriki, MacLane, and D. Williams.

The Minor League Pitching Coordinator was the other guy we interviewed for the vacant pitching coach job when we fired Vern Ruhle. Rick Peterson got the job and Rick Waits went from being our pen coach to being our minor league pitching coordinator. He happens to be from Tucson and I had the chance to meet him a few times when he was our pen coach and right after he got the pitching coordinator job. He is a great guy, even giving me a shirt from the winter mini camp before the 03 season, which I wore last week to turner field.

that would be fine by me. Still too many guys though… I’m holding out hope that Lima and Iriki will be jettisoned, but i have a feeling the club for some reason feels an obligation to hold onto Lima til the season ends or someone else wants him because he accepted demotions to Norfolk several times when he didnt have to (if you ask me theres absolutely no obligation there. he did it because he rightfully decided the mets would probably get injuries and call him up at some point. it was for his own good not ours)

well i seem to remember when peterson was hired and waits given the coord job, they talked about how peterson met with waits and the coaches and got them all on the same program. Not even trying to give all the credit to Peterson as much as I’m so happy to see the Mets organization finally doing something right in getting the minor league clubs to essentially work together instead of against each other which we even saw mess up Aaron Heilman for years…

(the one thing im still not so high on is if Pelfrey didn’t need a mouthguard for his medical condition in single-A or double-A why does he need one now? Hes really been chomping down on it and while theres no proof its hurting his game, i find it hard to believe its helping it. Are they really concerned hes gonna bite down on his tongue?

Great little story…apparently Pedro likes to talk back to the TV while watching ESPN…..

Former GM Steve Phillips, a trade deadline fixture on ESPN in the absence of Peter Gammons, is on the big screen giving his rundown of the Top Five playoff-ready rotations. All of Phillips’ picks are from the American League, a detail that he emphasizes for effect, and that incites Pedro Martinez.

Martinez hops up from his chair and shouts at the giant Phillips face, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ll apologize later.”

But the talking head Phillips isn’t finished. Almost on cue, he switches to Martinez’s performance on Friday — his first start in a month — and then stresses the importance of resting him for October.

“I had a rest!” Martinez shouts. With that, the players stretched out on the clubhouse sofas start laughing, and Jose Valentin, stitting at a laptop watching video, yells over, “Put him in the freezer!”

Alay Soler. Whats with this guy? He looked pretty good a few outings for the Mets. I thought he would settle down and turn into a consistent starter..I think the Mets made a mistake sending him down.

Rick Waits is not the pitching coach for Norfolk figured id share that. Randy Niemann is the pitching coach for Norfolk

    Title: Pitching Coach
Bio: Randy Niemann, 50, returns to Norfolk after spending the 2003 season as the Tides pitching coach. An eight-year Major League veteran, he ended his career in Norfolk in 1988 while playing with the Tidewater Tides. Niemann pitched in the Majors with the New York Mets, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins from 1979 - 1987, and compiled a career record of 7-8 with a 4.64 ERA in 62 games. He was a member of the Mets’ 1986 World Series Championship team, and spent the 2005 season as the rehabilitation pitching coordinator for the Mets in St. Lucie, Florida.

Rich, i dont think anyone referred to Waits as the pitching coach for Norfolk. We said hes the Mets Minor League Pitching Coordinator.

hmmm Darren did you happen to only watch his good outings? The problems he had in his good outings at the beginnings - having trouble throwing strikes - those were amplified horribly in his other starts. He didn’t challenge hitters and got himself into deep trouble that he couldn’t find his way out of. His stuff can be good enough sometimes, but his makeup wasnt there this time around. He may have been injured for the last start in which case perhaps he can come back and be effective at some point, but after seeing him pitch in the majors, I don’t think anyones holding their breath…
