Minor League Recap

I know a lot of you have been missing the daily minor league recaps here. The truth is that they are very time-consuming to writeup and, while we all love a wordy recap of the games, we figured that consolidating all of the Mets’ minor league boxscores for a given day would both satiate your need for minors coverage as well as leave us time to work on other things. The boxscores will be modified and enhanced over time, and if you have any comments or suggestions please fire away.

Yea, not sure how I missed that. They’re on the way.

Fernando Martinez - DH for Hagerstown over the weekend.

Martinez’s replacement Joe Holden got sent down to Brooklyn where he is struggling batting .205 but Undrafted Free Agent Will Vogl (from St. John’s) is hitting .300 for Hagerstown batting leadoff and playing CF

That was a different Martinez, a backup catcher.

And I believe that was posted 7/9, so FMart should be back anytime now.

Corey Coles is a little old for High-A (24), but he has put up some very nice numbers. His OBP is .401, and he has 17 steals. He doesn’t hit for any power though.

Joseph Smith has been nasty at Brooklyn. The side-armer might have a nice future. Thankfully the Brooklyn team is starting to hit a little bit recently, it was pretty ugly there for a while.

By the way, for all of those that are itching to trade away Milledge (and there are many on these pages), just a little food for thought with some comparable prospects…

Lastings Milledge, age 21, Triple A, OPS: .895
Delmon Young, age 20, Triple-A, OPS: .780 (only 5 months younger)
    B.J. Upton, age 21, Triple-A, OPS: .773
    Carlos Quentin, age 23, Triple-A, OPS: .916
    Felix Pie, age 21, Triple-A, OPS: .709

    I could go on…

We all love prospects, and then no one wants to let them develop. David Wright is the exception, most people do not get called up and immediately contribute to the extent that he did. See Jose Reyes. People wanted to ship him out this offseason for Tejada, people wanted to demote him at one point last year, and people definitely wanted to drop him from the leadoff spot, even this year. How did a little patience work out there? Milledge is putting up the numbers, so he needs to be given a chance to develop at the major league level.

actually got to see him throw (I wouldn’t say pitch) on TV- he seems to have just one pitch (it’s one hellacious nasty pitch though)- NYPenn League hitters can’t touch him- but, his command’s iffy and as a righty sidearmer (a species that tends to have difficulties with lefty batters) he apparently deals with lefties by hitting them :-)

Smith has walked two batters in 13 innings and has hit four, though only one lefty. Lefties are batting .200/.294/.200 while righties are batting .074/.194/.111. He also has 15 strikeouts, though we’re still looking at a tiny sample.

Is Keppinger really being traded to KC for a second-base prospect I’ve never heard of? I’ve heard the rumors, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

That’s the rumor. Though, the other side of the coin is that the Royals are thought to be trading Ruben Gotay for a second baseman nobody in KC has ever heard of (although they might recall Keppinger’s name from the three-way deal that landed Kris Benson in NY and Justin Huber in KC).

  18. Comment posted by FMF on July 18, 2006 at 12:04 pm (#60285)

Gotay seems to have good numbers in AAA Omaha. His BB:K ratio is pretty bad though, 26BB:67K, but he has some power with 9 HR and 16 2B and some speed with 7 SB, so maybe giving up kepp, who has no power and little speed might be a good deal.

  20. Comment posted by jpwf on July 18, 2006 at 12:24 pm (#60288)

Gotay’s now 23, he was a prospect who was rushed to the majors (he hit .290/.373/.441 in AA at age 21)
he wasn’t ready but KC let him flail away in the MLB for 400 or so lackluster at bats

    he’s hitting .264/.322/.404 in AAA
he’s 3 years younger than Kepp who’s hitting .297/.349/.356 in AAA

Right now they seem roughly equivalent- Kepp has greater on base ability- Gotay has a little bit of added power-

but Gotay is three years younger, in a deal like this always get the younger guy
