Minor League Recap

AAA Norfolk Tides

  • The Norfolk Tides (29-43) lost to the Louisville Bats 2-1. Evan MacLane had a decent outing and made a nice recovery from his last time on the mound. MacLane picked up the loss despite pitching well to drop to 6-2 and went six innings and gave up ten hits, only one of which was an extra base hit, and two runs while striking out two. Anderson Hernandez went 1 for 4, Chris Basak went 2 for 4, Michael Tucker went 2 for 4 with a walk, and Chase Lambin went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

AA Binghamton

  • The Binghamton Mets (31-39) beat the Akron Aeros 7-1 behind Mike Pelfrey as he keeps on rolling. Pelfrey improved to 3-1 and went seven innings and gave up four hits, one earned run, and three walks while striking out six. In Pelfrey’s last five starts he has a 3-0 record, 5.91 H/9, 0.28 HR/9, 2.53 BB/9, 10.13 K/9, 0.94 WHIP, and a 1.41 ERA. Henry Owens made an appearance in the game and threw one inning, gave up one walk, and struck out one while lowering his ERA to 0.87. On the offensive end, Carlos Gomez went 2 for 5 with a double, Ray Navarrete went 2 for 5 with his fourth homerun of the year, Michel Abreu went 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI, Andy Wilson went 2 for 5 with a run scored and a double, Jay Caligiuri went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double, and Rashad Eldridge went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, his first homerun of the year, and four RBIs.

High-A St. Lucie Mets

  • The St. Lucie Mets (39-30) beat the Brevard County Manatees 2-0 behind a complete game gem by Michael Devaney as he improved to 6-3 with a 1.61 ERA. Devaney went the distance and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out ten. The St. Lucie bats were quiet and only got three hits as Corey Coles went 1 for 3 with a run scored, a double, and a walk, Enrique Cruz went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Caleb Stewart went 1 for 3 with his first homerun of the year.

Low-A Hagerstown Suns

  • The North All-Stars beat the South All-Stars 3-0. Jon Niese threw one inning for the North All-Stars and did not allow a baserunner while striking out two.

NY-Penn League Brooklyn Cyclones

  • The Cyclones (0-1) wish they could take a mulligan on opening day as they lost 18-0 to the Staten Island Yankees. Junior Contreras, who Matt Meyers from Baseball America tabbed the best player no one heard about in the Mets system, went 2 for 2 with two walks, Tim Grogan went 1 for 2 with two walks, and Will Bashelor went 2 for 3. Jorge Reyes got the start and did not make it out of the second inning to drop to 0-1. Reyes gave up six hits, seven runs, six earned runs, one walk, and one homer while striking out two.

Rookie VSL Mets

  • The VSL Mets (16-14) lost to the VSL Astros 5-3. Question-Was Niese the only SALLY All-Star for the Suns?

    Other Comments

Pelfrey should start the second game of a doubleheader in August.

Devaney should be sent a ticket to Binghamton

The Cyclones have very little prospects but I do like Will Bashelor who could be a steal in the draft. Bashelor is very fast and does the little things right.

With all the Mets Roster stocked now, how many more draft picks will the Mets Sign? I say 6 (Mulvey, Barfield, Orta, Schafer, Jason Jacobs, and Koller)

Michael, I read at Metsblog where it claimed that Willie said that LM has an average throwing arm. You followed him when he was down in the minors and is that true that his throwing arm is average? I thought a 5 tool player had a great throwing arm. What’s your take on this?

Michael, I think you were a bit too generous in your assessment of his MacLane’s outing.

When are they going to arrange the one way bus ticket for Owens and Pelfrey to Norfolk?

Is Humber supposed to go today/tonite for St Lucie?

Devaney,23, took a no hitter into the eigth last night and is making a case for a promotion. He and Ruckle, 20, probably qualify as surprises. MiLB did a piece on Ruckle, but I have absolutely no knowledge of what Devaney throws, etc. D clearly strikes batters out.

Agree that you are probably giving MacLane a bit more credit than he deserved yesterday. One extra base hit is fine but ten hits - even without a walk, which is almost par for the course with EM - he has been much more hittable of late.

Promotions are all probably going to wait until the All Star break. The Mets will cut some dead wood for more draft signings and bring guys up a level to accomodate in the lower minors.

I think we are all missing the obvious. Did the Tides win or lose? If they won how did MacLane pick up the loss?

MacLane seems to pitch to contact, which is fine if you have good defence. I’m pretty sure Chris Basak doesn’t have Reyes type range at short.

What’s the status of there signings? I think I saw one listed on ESPN yesterday.

MacLane throws strikes has come from nowhere to be a legitimate contender for a September start or a rotation spot next year or a trade. It’s a good story. MacLane is pitching better than Lima down there and the Mets gave him 3 starts. MacLane did get the loss and is 6-2

Devaney, Ruckle and maybe Jose Sanchez will get called up to AA by the end of the season.

BTW look at St. Lucie and the starters who have done well there this year and moved throughout organization… Pelfrey and Soler started there

Now you have Devaney, Jose Sanchez, and Jake Ruckle who are at the door waiting for a call up. In addition Phil Humber will come back and start at St. Lucie and Sal Aguilar has won games this year at both Hagerstown and St. Lucie.

The Mets have done a good job of rebuilding the Minor League Pitching and they will try to trade some of this talent around deadline.

F Mart was on the roster but injured.

Congrats to Matt Lindstrom for his selection to the futures game roster
