Mets.com: Mets Add Five to 40-Man Roster
by: http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20051118&content_id=1270274&vkey=pr_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym on Nov 18, 2005 7:59 PM | Filed under: News

“Friday night… always a good night for some Sabbath.”

Who are these guys!?

The New York Mets today added five players to their 40-man winter roster: Righthanded pitchers Brian Bannister, Anderson Garcia, Henry Owens and Yusmeiro Petit, and lefthanded pitcher Juan Perez. In addition, the Mets outrighted outfielders Ambiorix Concepcion and Todd Self to Norfolk (AAA) of the International League.

Thanks to Neil.

    Bannister and Petit, I know.

    The others? Not so much.

    Who are these guys!

Garcia is the sole remnant of the Benitez deal. Owens a minor rule 5er from last year and late AFLer after Hill left, and Perez is from Pawtucket, lefty reliever, minor FA signed a few weeks ago.

I posted this elsewhere, but this is more appropriate:

Perez, 27, signed a minor league contract with the Mets on October 28th after spending the 2005 season with Pawtucket (AAA) of the International League in the Boston Red Sox organization. In 40 games, he was 4-5 with a 4.50 ERA (31 earned runs in 62.0 innings pitched) with one save.
The Mets’ 40-man roster now stands at 36.

Now, this might seem like a stupid question and i’m a newbie, but, why exactly isn’t Lastings Milledge on the 40-man?

I know Garcia had been hyped as a closer-type in minors. IIRC hard stuff, power righty. Did he have surgery in 04, I can’t remember straight. Split time 05 in STL to Bing.
Owens, I was surprised he was in AFL now I am he’s on 40man. I don’t see it. Was in STL all year, did ok, but, not to the point that he needs a roster spot, IMO

  6. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 8:16 pm (#16496)

He doesn’t need to be. From espn’s explanation:

Eligibility: A player not on a team’s Major League 40-man roster is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if: the player was 18 or younger when he first signed a pro contract and this is the fourth Rule 5 draft since he signed, OR if he was 19 or older when he first signed a pro contract and this is the third Rule 5 draft since he signed.

Because he’s he hasn’t been in the system long enough to NEED to be, some guys after they’re in the minors long enough need to be or risk exposure to the rule v draft.

Not a stupid question at all. A player with fewer than three years of professional experience does not have to be on the 40-man roster to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Milledge had only 26 at-bats in 2003 which wasn’t enough to qualify as a full year. He played full seasons in 2004 and 2005, so after next season he would have to be put on the 40-man roster or else his team would have to expose him to the Rule 5 draft.

Nice to see we are done over hyping Concepcion and will make room on the 40 man for someone with more potentil/talent.

Don’t know if you all caught it, but there is a poll in the lower left corner of mets.com asking where Wright should hit next year — 55% of the nearly 17,000 votes said third - think Willie is reading it?

  11. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 8:35 pm (#16504)

How do you compare Concepcion with Owens for example?
No I don’t think Willie is reading anything…

Two other items I enjoyed hearing:

    From mets.com

Juan Padilla has a 3-1 record and 3.08 ERA in 20 appearances and 26 1/3 innings with the Caguas Criollos. The 28-year-old right-hander, who pitched for the Yankees and Reds in 2004, split his 2005 between Norfolk and Shea Stadium, producing a 1.42 ERA in 37 appearances and 63 1/3 innings in Triple A and a 1.49 ERA in 24 appearances and 36 1/3 innings with the Mets.

Hernandez, who had a composite .315 average in 534 at-bats split between Double A and Triple A, is batting .318 in 66 at-bats with Licey.

These are two guys who can figure prominently next year. It is nice to see Hernandez continue to hit - reinforcing the idea the last year was not a fluke!

I’ll have to wonder what the hell if they keep Owens and not Maclane. A AA lefty will leave ala Dinardo, he doesn’t have to be glavine, they ought to protect him. Is today the last day?

  15. Comment posted by harry on November 18, 2005 at 8:53 pm (#16509)

I dont know what to think is Anderson Hernanadez for real or just a Tony Gwyen
    on the AAA level?

  16. Comment posted by sweetlew on November 18, 2005 at 8:54 pm (#16510)

I don’t know why they moved Owens to the 40 man, or if it makes sense or not (don’t know enough about him), but at least they are (rightfully so) giving up on Concepcion - I guess it makes more sense to protect and arm than a OFer who doesn’t live up to the hype.

  17. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 8:59 pm (#16511)

Nice to see we are done over hyping Concepcion and will make room on the 40 man for someone with more potentil/talent.

Which part of his game do you think is over-hyped, his D, his bat? He did get off to a terrible start granted, but he did finish with 29 2b /5 3b /15hr playing a split in CF and RF with 35 SBs. I saw him play and was very impressed. I know little about Owens granted, but how does he have more “potential” (sic) than Concepcion, or Perez for that matter (I know very little about him). If you could qualify how these other guys have more talent/potential than Amb Concepcion, that would be great since I don’t see how that is.

  18. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 9:00 pm (#16512)

I don’t think they are “giving up” on the guy, just not protecting him. His visa issues showed that he was older than originally thought, so he’s less attractive for where he is, especially with the season he had, but I think they still like him, just not enough to think he’d be taken in the draft.

  19. Comment posted by cp on November 18, 2005 at 9:05 pm (#16513)

    Is today the last day?

The Rule V draft is on December 8th so players can be protected by being added to the 40-man by then.

  20. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 9:08 pm (#16514)

I knew the draft was on the 8th, I thought there was a day they had to be on the 40man by, prior to the 8th. (I actually thought it was today and alot of clubs made 40man moves, so I got suspicious). You say the 8th though thats good enough for me…

  21. Comment posted by cp on November 18, 2005 at 9:10 pm (#16515)

Ambi has lost his aura because he is both too old for his 2005 league and his inability to make contact. At his age 136 ks against low A pitching is a bad sign unless you’re pummeling 35 HRs and he ony had 15.

Did you go to many Suns games? I caught a half dozen including Gaby Hernandez Fathers Day no-hitter. Gonna save my scorecard . . .

    November 19, 2005
Day to file reserve lists for all Minor League levels and Major Leagues.
Last date to make an off-season outright assignment of an injured player to the Minor Leagues if the player does not meet the requirements listed in Article XIX(C)(b) of the Basic Agreement.

Actually my suspicions were answered on MLB, I think the “reserve list” is what they need to be on or they are available.

I went to a handful as well. He is awesome to watch GHern. Thats cool you have the scorecard. I know why his aura has diminished, I just don’t think dude slamming him was nice, he is just a kid and of course trying. I don’t think the statement he made can be qualified in that he’s never seen him, nor has he seen nor heard much about Owens, Perez, or probably Garcia. I think a kid is allowed a “subpar” season, although when you go to the games, does this guy have a cannon or what?! He is fun to watch, even if he had a bad year.

  24. Comment posted by cp on November 18, 2005 at 9:34 pm (#16520)

Unfortunately I caught Ambi on a bunch of high K days - don’t think I saw him get one xbh.

But Gomez speed turned my head. I saw Reyes a couple of times in AA and Gomez seems to me to have Reyes type speed. If can get the bat on the ball more often he could be a ton of fun to watch.

I think that’s part of what’s nice about the mini-youth renaissance we’re seeing. Reyes & Wright are not only accomplished but fun to watch. We haven’t had that in a while. Jay Payton? Looks like other players - wasn’t much fun about him. Timo did have a short-lived spark & I enjoyed Mora who had stood the test of time.

Gaby is fun to watch, Milledge was another “catalyst” type player the series I saw him play (AA at Bowie). And as I said Gomez is a blur . . .

Delgado is a helluva player but he’s pretty joyless. Doesn’t mean we couldn’t use him or that he may not help deliver rings just a different style player.

  25. Comment posted by fire willie on November 18, 2005 at 9:59 pm (#16524)

I was on west coast for Payton’s run through the minors. Milledge is unreal, I think people who don’t get to watch him just think of him as a name, a “prospect”. When you see him and Gomez for that matter, its exciting. I always like watching young guys, which is why I will never get putting a GWilliams on the team. A guy like Pagan even would be so much better for that role, as small as it is. Then you see these kids coming up and its like, damn, 06 all star break, 07 look out. I just hope they can chill and not trade these kids away, its so disheartening to follow the kids and then they go elsewhere. You know, like you can save the GHern no hit scorecard, what if he’s on the Reds or Drays, how fun is that? I would hope if they do a deal they can try to hype up Zambrano and give him and Trax, even Benson, with NAdy and hope its enough.

  26. Comment posted by Rich on November 18, 2005 at 10:05 pm (#16525)

Fire Willie totally agree with you, I dont want to trade away our kids at all. only would if we were getting a young guy 25-28 that would be a missing piece. that being said no one trades those guys so why should we give lastings away for a guy whose 33 and wont even run out a ball. we should just keep the kids and build a championship team that way and be good for 5+ years instead of one and done.

Lets build from within, Braves done it and Yanks did it, they go to the playoffs every year. we need to stay young pitching and defense is the way to win games and thats suppose to be the New Mets style.

  30. Comment posted by fire willie on November 19, 2005 at 12:57 am (#16531)

I don’t think you’d get much for him, or at least what you would hope/think you’d get. He’s worth more to thump it and see if he can put together a nice season, again. Remember, there were some serious MVP chants in Shea not too long ago. Also, he’s integral to the lineup right now, you need to add to him, not take him away.

  31. Comment posted by sweetlew on November 19, 2005 at 1:57 am (#16541)

I actually did see Concepcion play - I caught a couple of Suns games befroe I left DC. He is another one of those “toolsy” players who doesn’t seem to have the mental make-up to make in in the high minors let alone the majors. His plate discipline is terrible and he doesn’t have the bat speed of a Milledge or even Reyes to get away with it.

I have nothing against the kid, but last off season he was rated as one of the Mets top ten prospects - waaaaay over rated and waaay overhyped. This organization has a tendancy to turn a lot of prospects into the “next big thing” Remember Gregg Jefferies - or was it Alex Ochoa or Jay Payton, or the list goes on and on.

My comment was more along the lines that it is nice to see us moving guys who clearly are not going to make it to the bigs off the forty man and make room for additions and suprises. I also know that sometimes it is more difficult to evaluate a pitcher in the minors; so without any knowledge on any of these guys, I will give the staff the benefit of the doubt. From where I am sitting, it is starting to look like our entire organization is pulling itself together and improving….now if only we don’t make any dumb trades….

As far as Gomez - kid is awesome, I love the energy he plays with, and I hope he makes a bigger splash next year.

Oh - and Concepcion was only on the 40 man roster because the contract he signed demanded he be put on it. So, it is not like he was put there based on past performance.

Interesting, I thought it’d be bc his age was found to be earlier than expected and his performance warranted it at that point. I would sincerely appreciate if you could post the link to his contract, I’d only heard of that kind of stipulation for #1 picks and the like (major lg contract). Speaking of which, an intersting note, mayhave been mentioned somewhere, but NAdy was the first player since Olerud to go straight from draft to majors.
