ESPN.com - MLB - Yankees receive permission to speak with Mazzone
by: Matt Gelb on Oct 18, 2005 12:00 AM | Filed under: News

If you’re feeling lowdown, don’t have a soul to care,
Just grab your hat and start for the Rocking Chair.

Is it a ploy for the Benjamins, or is Leo serious?

“Forget it,” Mazzone said at the time. “I’m an Atlanta Brave. I’m very pleased with what I got here. They were very fair. I’m pleased with everything.”

Mazzone, who turned 57 Sunday, has been with the Braves organization since 1979. He had a brief stint as Atlanta’s co-pitching coach in 1985, then returned as the sole pitching coach in June 1990 after Bobby Cox was hired as manager.

Mets fans should make it a priority to stay abreast of the Mazzone saga. If he leaves, the Braves will be vulnerable for the first time in 15 years.

I’d be shocked, SHOCKED if Mazzone didn’t finish out his contract in Atlanta.

I just don’t see this happening. Leo Mazzone is going to leave his home, a great situation with terrific pitching, a chance to win consistently, and a place where he’s treated like the second coming of Jesus… to go to the Yankees so he can be demeaned by George Steinbrenner on a regular basis if the pitchers don’t pan out?

Unless they give him a boatload of money — like a million plus a year, which is unheard of for a coach — Mazzone’s staying in Atlanta.

To haunt us for the next twenty years.

He’s just going to go back to Atlanta with a raise, his interview with the Yankees will be as authentic as a token minority interview for manager.

If Omar does what he needs to do this offseason, it won’t matter who the pitching coach for the Braves is.

    Unfortunately, probably not true.

Mazzone would have to be completely nuts to leave Atlanta and board the good ship Steinbrenner. Instead of just rocking back and forth he’d be vibrating like a tuning fork dealing with gorgeous george and the Tampa crew second guessing him at every turn.

This is quite the perdicament for me, being a Mets fan.
Do I want Leo Mazzone to stay with the Braves and put up with his amazing ability to make anyone a potential Cy Young candidate as long as they stay healthy, only to prevent the damn Yankees from getting him? It’ll provide tons of comic relief to see someone reject the Yankees, it’s always good fun.

Or do I want to see him as a Yankee in order to make those spoiled Yankee fans, who believe they can get anything, only for the satisfaction of making the Braves weaker?

Meh, knowing the Braves they have a guy in the wings in the minor leagues ready to take over and fill in for thier superstar just like they do with thier position players every year…

    This situation sucks.

When you consider how much owners pay for wins, its amazing that Mazzone only makes 225k. I am sure George would offer 1mil area for him. Look at what he’s paying Jaret Wright alone, another mil to make that investment itself payof would be worth it let alone what he’d do for all the others. I don’t believe that coaches’ salaries count against the cap, so he wouldn’t get taxed for it. I see it pulling through, which as much as you can hate the Yanks, you have to want the Braves off the pedestal more.

I completely feel your pain. But I hope Mazzone stays with the braves, just to see the yanks (particularly Steinbrenner) suffer. That prick has had one of the best coaching staffs and best GM’s in baseball for the last decade, a dynasty full of young players, and he managed to screw it up because he couldn’t get out of his own damn way… And to echo the sentiment of one of the previous posts, if Omar does his job this winter, it won’t matter if General Patton is coaching the Braves next season…

It’s not worth it. We can beat the Braves next year even if they have Mazzone. It’s been done before. The Expos beat the Braves in the strike year with Mazzone. If the Yankees get Mazzone, it’s game over. Those &^(*&^$##s will own the World Series for the next decade. Does anyone want to see that happen? If possible, can we get in the sweepstakes with double/triple/quadruple/10X whatever the Yanks are offering Leo? If anyone in baseball managing/coaching is worth anything, it’s Leo Mazzone. I want him. I want him badly. I want him with the unrecquited lust Michael Jackson harbors for…oh nevermind. Why is it that the Yankees are always buying the toys I want for my team?

Here’s the difference between the Expos and Mets…….

We’re the mets, we just DON’T beat the Braves.+

Willie disagrees with that. He thinks there’s nothing to the Mets/Atl “rivalry”/ perennial clock cleaning.

The Braves didn’t always own us - there was a point in the late 90’s where they were our whipping boys - we just couldn’t beat anyone else — I know Ricardo or one of you guys with too much time on your hands will back me up here — or else I am getting old and the memory is starting to go. I also believe the year Bobby Jones was 10-2 at the Break (97?) we smacked the Braves around pretty good as well. We just couldn’t beat anyone else!

As far as Mazzone - after what Mel said on his way out the door, there is no way Mazzone would go to NY - besides, even he couldn’t fix that staff — remember the offenses in the AL East are much, much, much better than those in the NL East.

On another front - let’s cheer for the Angles in the Manny Rameriez sweepstakes. That will do 2 things for us - keep us from dumping too much talent for a crappy LF whose offense will be seriously deminishing in the near future and take one of the potential suitors for Piazza out of the game. With Manny, the Angles do not need Piazza to DH and back-up catch. The only other thing we could use is someone else (Yankees?) to sign Damon — then Cammy will net us something good (Shoppach) from the Sox.

He may slightly be diminishing but he’s still one of the most productive hitters in the entire MLB. He is a huge thunderous bti bat that the mets need.

At first I was kinda against Manny but to me, this off-season it’s either Giles or Manny or this team is going to be in the same position as we are now. Which is 3rd place and good but not good enough and I will not settle for 3rd place…

  16. Comment posted by sweetlew on October 18, 2005 at 8:26 pm (#14271)

I would like Manny too — just not for the price the Red Sox will want for him and not with all the baggage and declining skills. Manny is not one of those guys who works hard and keeps himself in great shape — he will decline faster than most modern players once he hits 35.

I’d rather have Giles - better defense, better teammate and maybe, 70% of the offense — all adds up to a better player. Remember Giles plays in Petco - even a worse hitter’s park than Shea - he is better than his numbers.

I heard recently that Leo always wanted to coach with his good friend Sam Perlozzo. Baltimore is interviewing him too. Even better if he goes there.

You’re onto something fire willie. I believe that Mazzone was the best man at Perlozzo’s wedding, or vice versa. But either way, they are extremely close friends, and Ray Miller is probably not coming back to Baltimore, as they are cleaning house over there.
