If he had enoughs innings to qualify, Kaz Ishii, despite pitching in a good pitcher’s park and in front of what is generally considered a good defense, would have the 100th worst ERA among qualified SPs.
Please Omar, spare us.

This situation is made even more pathetic by the fact that there are two other legitimate options in the system. What gives?

Whatever they do with Icky, they cannot let him start anymore. The Mets need to get some winning streaks going — winning two out of three is nice but they have to sweep some series too to make head way. They will never be able to do that with Icky Ishii in the rotation. Again, this is now on Willie, Rick and Omar. Anymore losses from Icky belong to them and not Icky.

Believe it or not, according to a quick blurb I read in the Daily News, Ishii is listed as the starter against the Nationals on Monday - so pen us in for a loss to open the series.
I am getting to the point where I want to burn Omar in effigy for making me have to watch this sorry excuse for a pitcher every fifth day. I can’t imagine how Willie feels!

I’ve come to the conclusion that NOT ONE PERSON in our front office has any clue.
I will say some people did talk Omar out of trading Floyd for Sosa, could you imagine where we would be had that happened?
I’m BEYOND frustrated with the whole thing, I have gone from angry to laughing at how incredibly inept they are.
Just think if we pick up Dunn, Wright might get to hit 8th, just unfriggin believable

do you guys really want DUNN on the mets? He strikes out nearly every AB. I don’t think he’s worth wasting any players on. What 1B are going to be available in the offseason anyone know?
Comment posted bymarkon July 1, 2005 at 11:09 am (#5788)
is 100th worst really that bad? Are you saying that he is better than 99 pitchers? I find that hard to believe.
Comment posted bysweetlewon July 1, 2005 at 11:32 am (#5795)
Since Dunn’s OBP is over .400 he could only strike out 6 out of 10 ABs - not everyone!
And he said 100th worse of SPs with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title - which is pretty damn bad!

you mean he’s the 100th best?

sick of looking at hogan’s biceps…maybe some of the mets could use that juice he’s on

When the Yankees can release two veteran relievers making decent change ON THE SAME DAY (despite a lack of obvious alternatives) without having anyone bat an eye, while the Mets continue to stand by Ishii DESPITE YOUNGER AND BETTER ALTERNATIVES waiting in the wings it just makes me want to pull my hair and scream. The only thing I can think of is that they’re waiting on Traschel to come back and reclaim the 5th spot, but in the meantime Ishii is costing us games that we simply can’t afford to lose.

I mean keeping this clown around makes so little sense, what could be the reasoning behind it?
1 - Ishii adds 5,000 Japanese fans for every home start? I doubt it
2 - The only thing Omar Minaya is capable of is asking Latin players to take large sums of money - quite possible
3 - They ARE looking to trade Seo and are worried that a rough ML outing will lower his value - maybe but I have a hard time giving Omar credit for a brain
Seo has to be quite valuable in ANY package, the sellers are usually always looking for a pitcher who can step in and be part of the rotation right away, not even including that he already has some limited ML success

It’s probably because…well, it seems like when the Mets make a personnel mistake, they would rather let the guy go 2-17 with a 7 ERA before they admit they made a bad choice, or that there might have even been better options available within the system.

The knocking of Omar on this site is a little out of hand. He deserves credit for some of his odds and ends pick-ups that have been quite good: Cairo, Anderson and Woodward. Besides Pedro and Beltran, they are the reason to me that the Mets are more fun to watch now then the last few years. It was so so depressing to turn on a game and see “Super” Joe McEwing out there or the retirement tours of Jay “Automatic Out” Bell and Todd Zeille — guys there to simply fill out the line-up without regard to whether they can help you win or not. These three guys are not superstars but they play the game the right way. Kudos to Omar for that. Hernandez snagged for the the bullpen, another nice Omar move. I also think snagging Ramon Castro at the last minute was a nice little move too. Sure, these are not earth shattering moves but they add up to give the Mets a pretty solid bench. Something they have lacked.

I think there isnt a player, coach or general manager or anyone on the Mets who hasn’t been criticized by someone on this site. There’s a lot of negativity. But it comes with the turf with a frustrating season. I won’t be suprised if we see http://www.fireomar.com pretty soon. I think Willie sounded awfully defensive about Ishii in the papers after that loss. The hook has got to come soon.

Sorry but I fail to see where that makes Omar smart, he did a great job filling our bench? I know from BTF us Mets fans have been screaming for them to upgrade our bench since the WS and Joe McEwing was a no-brainer
What he did is a good job convincing Pedro and Beltran to take lots of money to help us get re-established, something I’m sure Duquette would not have been able to pull off. But from what we have read, if not for some people in the Mets FO we would have traded Cliff Floyd for Sammy Sosa, Omar wanted this trade very, very bad, the bounce back year for Slammy.
Between that, which we owe to whoever told him no and keeping Kaz Iishi after 3 months I think it trumphs a good bench. If anything your post proves the point, he has added some nice talent to the mix yet we STILL CAN’T GET the best 25 guys on the roster, that would be a no brainer right?

I will agree with this though, the negativity Mets fans usually hang out gets a little ridiculous. Beltran a bust? Not worth it? Hell Pedro might be .500 if it wasn’t for Carlos.
We all knew he was coming from 2 hitters parks and his numbers were due to decline at Shea, but just from watching him since the Yankee series I would say it is pretty obvious his leg was affecting him more than he was saying. Lets be negative after 3 whole months in NY and a bum leg to a guy that makes NO excuses that makes sense
I also think jumping on Randolph after 3 mo as a manager is a little ridiculous too, despite some of his moves
It like when Reyes came up and everyone was screaming bust, or that Wright was because he couldn’t handle the high fastball. Its like Humber, they guy was on the DL and is 3 months in to his first professional season and people were already worried he was about to bust, ridiculous.
But if your telling me that at the halfway point in your season and you still don’t have the best 25 men on your roster, then you just might not be good at your job

the only thing that disturbs me about Omar is his pursuit of Sosa and Alou in the pre-season. I also suspect that he is behind these Ishii starts. Willie said after the last start that Ishii was pitching because he was “in the rotation.” Sounded to me like a guy who had no explanation because it wasn’t his decision. But Omar has shown patience and I like patience with this team at this point. Don’t give the store away. And if we do get someone get someone who is fairly young.

I think Omar is hoping Ishii makes two good starts in a row so he can hope to generate any trade value - good freaking luck! It is the only thing that makes sense - the problem is that guy seems to through a great game everythird start or so - maybe somebody is deranged enough to think he can go through the same turn around Zambrano did in June!

here’s my plan.
DFA graves. option koo. move ishii into the pen (check out his lefty/righty splits, and inning by inning splits). put seo in the rotation. call up padilla.
i agree with sweetlew…the only reason to keep ishii in the rotation is to continue showcasing him. as bad as he is, there are a few teams that he’d be an upgrade for at the back end of the rotation…especially since he’s practically free. but the question is, what are we really going to get for him? and is it worth giving up starts in the meantime? i’m willing to give minaya the benefit of the doubt on this one, but if he’s still in the rotation in a month, i’m starting a petition.
